Clark (Tom Welling) and Martha (Annette O'Toole) take in a little girl, Maddie (guest star Emily Herst), after her foster mother is brutally stabbed to death. However, after it is discovered that Maddie has the power to shatter glass, she becomes the prime suspect. Meanwhile, Chloe (Allison Mack) walks in on Lex (Michael Rosenbaum) and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) during an intimate moment. Erica Durance also stars.

The episode was written by Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer and directed by Tom Welling.

Wow, everybody rushed to comment on this one!

None of you missed much. This was Tom Welling's turn in the director's chair, like many TV stars end up doing on their own shows. It wasn't an improvement--this was certainly one of their worse episodes. I sat through the whole thing because nothing was running against it.

Oops--I just remembered Everybody Hates Chris had a hilarious promo commercial this week. Dang, now I hate myself.

If I were Chloe, I'd be angry too.....if one of my friends rushed into an obviously dangerous relationship, and another friend turned a blind eye. This was the first time Chloe lied to Clark in several years. I don't blame her.

Yea this episode seemed to move at a sluggish pace. I mean the bad guy was taken out twice( not all Tom's fault but the writers as well..but come on the first time was about halfway through the show ). And when Lana came up and confronted Chloe( the total package rarr;) ) I wanted to hit her for being such a well ya know. It astounds me how retarded they made here character in 2 years. I liked the scenes with Clark and the girl though and I thought that the ending shouldve been her leaving with the grandma, instead of the forced, bow on the head, heavy handed romance with Lexana:sad: . Oy what have become, Ive...combined names....for shame. Anyway I give a 2.

I was having trouble determining if this was an episode of Smallville or a commercial for AOL.

The whole epiode just seemed so unoriginal to me. The whole "Clark as a surgate big brother" thing has already been done to death on this show.

I didn't like the episode much. Clark taking a fatherly role was the one good side.

There's good product placement and there's bad product placement. This is a perfect example of the bad variety. It was in your face and not believable in the slightest. I think a billionaire can do better than AOL; especially one as secretive as Lex.

Complain all you want, but I thought this was one of the better episodes of the season because it showed Clark acting as a father, and it put Lois into Martha's Cabinent. The Lex/ Lana moments were overplayed, but I thought everything else rocked, and I really couldn't complain when the villian escaped the first time because the officer was foolish enough to not remove his glasses. I do believe this was the first time they've touched on a second generation kryptonite poisoned person as well, which makes me wonder if that will become one of their focuses next season.

Next week looks like a parody of the Saw Movies. Let's see how far they go with that.

i am not sure parody is the right word. ripoff might be more accurate.

and this would hardly be the first time. usually the episodes coincide with a theatrical or dvd release of other in the news films. here are a few examples from last season:

4x03 Facade = Nip/Tuck
4x04 Devoted = The Stepford Wives
4x06 Transference = Too many to list (freaky friday, etc)
4x08 Spell = Charmed
4x21 Forever = House of Wax

I don't...really have anything to say about this episode. Welling did an okay job as director. I thought that little girl was going to turn out to be a Clayface (or Glassface, I guess) since her grandmother didn't know she existed.

That ending with Lana and Lex...I feel like I missed something...

It wasn't wax, it was ice. The guy was freezing them. WB just made it sound like it was wax in the promos so they could tie it into the "fever for the movie" (um, yeah...guess they don't go outside).

If it had been wax, Clark wouldn't have had to rush behind Lana as her stiff self started to fall. Wax doesn't shatter.

IMPORTANT PONDERING POINT:
Someone in this episode made a remark about Chloe not having a boyfriend.

That someone was right--that's odd, and I'd never thought about it before. Chloe isn't an introvert and she's not waiting for Clark. What's really going on there?

i know it was glass, but the premise of the show was a ripoff of house of wax. the fact that it was glass hardly made the episode an original idea.

Well, she seemed pretty hurt after what happened when she rushed into having sex with Jimmy Olsen. I guess between that, pining for Clark, and Pete leaving, she's in no rush to be in a relationship.

Chloe's got a lot on her mind, what with going to college and working at the Planet. Having a boyfriend just isn't high on her priorety list.

Seemed alot like the "Ryan" episodes from early in the show, just with a girl instead.

The "bad guy" was lame too. Glass vs Clark? No chance

2/5

Also, Lex's downward spiral continues with his jagged comment toward Chloe. That was the only redeeming part of the episode.

!!!

Man, I guess I haven't seen much of this series in the last couple of years. Jimmy Olsen?

I get that the creators love to play against expectations with their character arcs on the show (with the exclusion of Pa Kent's demise this season), but for the life of me I can't figure out where they are going with Lois Lane. On the other hand, I also can't figure out who's running the Talon, who's supposed to be in school where now and/or whether Lex and Lionel are evil from week to week.

Way to go, Jimmy!

but for the life of me I can't figure out where they are going with Lois Lane.

Lois Lane just feels like something of a third wheel for me in this series. Personally, I feel she would've been better suited as only starring in a few episodes then leaving. She doesn't really have much of a place in Clark's life as of yet. Clark is still pining and having conflicts with Lana and whenever he needs a shoulder to lean on or a close friend he turns to Chloe. Where does that leave Lois? We know she's going to play an important role in Clark's life in the future, but that's not happening until he is an adult and has moved on from Lana. So far I feel she doesn't really have much purpose in Smallville.

Okay.....Chloe made a passing reference to this incident in an episode that dealt with teen sex (it might have been the one where Alicia came back, but I'm not sure). She said she wished she'd waited, but instead she deflowered herself back when Lionel first put her to work in the Daily Planet, and to "some guy.....Jimmy, I think his name was." She never said Olsen, but it's more than likely Olsen was who they meant. And everyone knows Smallville continuity is different.

I saw the promo for the next episode.....wow, that IS quite the Saw ripoff. *sigh* Why are they doing this? Because teens think Saw is cool and they desperately want to remain cool? Because they're short on ideas, they like Saw, and they think no one will notice? I hope the DVD gets a commentary for this episode and they explain themselves....
