What a great episode.

Everything I said was bad (or missing) about last week's episode was wonderfully absent from this episode. Its nice that we just get an episode with no hidden meanings, no mystery (well barring the whole Henry/Button thing), no questions, no answers. Just a small episode that lets us know that life on the island is still just life on an island.

I also liked that this was a Rose episode (or Rose/Bernard episode). I'd always lumped her into to a secondary character, but her and Bernard together seem to upgrade them to 'Main Character' status.

I didn't understand Rose's displeasure to Bernard's creation of an S.O.S. sign until they outright told us. Lazy viewing on my part but it seemed like a nice episode for me to turn off my 'analyze everything for a hidden meaning' radar. Love the fact that someone on the island at least knows Locke was in a wheelchair prior to crashing on the island. I was shocked that Rose was dying prior to the island, never would have guessed that either. Glad to know it wasn't just a one-time fluke that Locke was cured...that there is something very special about the island.

Though it makes me think about when the series ends...

If Locke and/or Rose survive through however many seasons the series runs, will they leave the island? Would they still stay there all by themselves if everyone else left? Does the magical healing powers of the island work for everyone?

The one and only thing I hated about this episode was the return of Micheal. I loooooooooooooathe Micheal. They've got your son. I get it. I got it 15 episodes back when you wouldn't stop screaming it. Build another raft and scream somewhere where I don't have to hear it.

Next weeks' episode-
looks like it could be a Micheal episode. Hurray.

All in all a nice touching episode is just what I needed from the series. :)

"Island Diary, Day 63: Jerky Tail Guy tried to write in the sand. His wife yelled at him."

Its nice that we just get an episode with no hidden meanings, no mystery (well barring the whole Henry/Button thing), no questions, no answers. Just a small episode that lets us know that life on the island is still just life on an island. That's the primary reason why I liked this episode. If this had aired at the beginning of the year, when ABC was giving us Lost in small spurts, I would probably be annoyed that they're "wasting time" with a show that didn't get somewhere, but among a huge batch of new episodes, this is a great chance to take a breath, forget the mystery and just enjoy the show. Plus, I've been begging for a Rose episode for over a year.

Bernard has an important role here. He's acting like a survivor should act. While by this time everyone has been chilling out and settling in, he is stuck in "day after the crash" mode, hopeful of rescue. It was fun to see the contrast between the Day 2 Survior and Day 63 Island Resident character types. Still, Rose was a bit more harsh than she usually is. Maybe it's because this is her first time dealing with real plot/character conflict. In her past appearances she's always seemed so...zen-like. But I didn't mind too much.

INSTANCES OF THE NUMBERS - Jack said Locke's leg would be healed in 4 weeks.

I'm annoyed we don't have 24/25 episodes like last season. I wonder why ABC even gave them such a weird number of eps in the first place?

Actually, next week is the 2-hour Alias event... the week after that is a Lost Special (presumably yet another Recap...) and the next new episode isn't until the beginning of May Sweeps on May 3... But, unless some of the info I've read has changed, your prediction about the episode is incorrect... fortunately. lol

But as for tonight's episode, I must agree that it was really nice to just have a slow-down piece that's not giving you too much plot info, just a bit of character insight. Seeing that Bernard would go to great lengths to save Rose and how deep his love actually runs was quite moving. I also agree that it's nice to know that someone on the island knew that Locke was in the wheelchair. Sure, in the beginning she may not have been able to make the connection, but as you get to know the character, I'm sure at some point prior to tonight she remembered.

Rose always comes across as the voice of reason, it's actually a refreshing change to see her step aside from that character trait to see that there's more to her than just being the mother hen and that she has her own problems and own reasons.

I was also very much expecting something to happen between Jack & Kate while they were trapped in the net (yet another "How Stupid can Kate be" move)... and quite frankly, I would have rather seen Zeke come out of the woods and not Rambo-Michael. If his character can actually make some kind of progress, I may warm back up to him, but judging from the teaser for the next episode, this is highly unlikely... just when I was getting used to not hearing "WHERE'S MY BOOOOOOOOOOOY?" every 5 minutes...

Way to balance the two out man. :p

Could've sworn I read somewhere that it was a straight through shoot to the finale from [whatever episode we were at] out.

Oh well, Just so I've got my facts straight, how many episodes are there in this season (given this was episode 19, I'm assuming we've just got a handful left)?

Was anyone else creeped out by Henry's smile as Locke asked him if he pushed the button?

I'm not upset Michael came back. He couldn't survive out alone for long, and it's already been a week since he disappeared. Maybe he'll actually help advance the plot.

Could've sworn I read somewhere that it was a straight through shoot to the finale from [whatever episode we were at] out.I might have said that in a previous talkback. I thought they had gotten another 26 episode season, but according to schedules it's only a regular order of 22, meaning we have 3 left. If I had been correct about the number of new episodes, there would have been no time for reruns.

In the podcast they said they had 24 hours of the show to do, and even apologized that there wouldn't be the 2-hour 24th episode like last year.

1. Anyone notice that both times they've shown the area with the balloon, it's been RAINING? BOTH TIMES! Any significance? Or am I trying to hard.

2. Rose is aware that Locke used to be paralyzed!

When I saw that this was going to be a Rose/Bernard flashback episode my first reaction was "Yay!" followed by, "Oh no, now the cute old couple is going to be revealed as a pair of escaped serial killers." Thankfully that wasn't the case.

I'm glad that the existence of the other hatch was finally mentioned, though Kate's reason for witholding the information was incredibly immature and petty. I don't blame Jack for not trusting her, especially after her stupidity got her captured and endangered the rest of them the last time they tried to contact the Others directly. Grr.

I noticed a lot of similarities from season one episodes implemented in this episode. When Rose spoke with Isaac, I got the same vibe from the Claire and the pyschic, with the whole there's a worldwide conspiracy originating from Australia spectrum. Another similarity, it looks like Locke has got a new obsession. Last season it was opening the Hatch. It looks like this season, it will be finding the '?'. Then there's the theme of faith. There's some things I probably forgot overnight.

So yes, Eko and Charlie are building a church. Bernard's comment about Eko was hilarious. Come to think of it, so was Rose's about the honeymoon should have been on a beach. Wish granted!

Good 'ol "Henry" has got me thinking. Unlike the rest of the Others, "Henry" has his own agenda. He claimed he wasn't a bad person. Yet, despite the lightning quick ninja skills the Others possess, he let himself get captured. And rightfully, near the survivor's camp, where he knows the Swan Hatch is near, as well. Perhaps, he was bidding his time until he got a chance to manipulate the survivors, as he was slowly doing with Jack and Locke throughout the past episodes. Why? I'm starting to think the button and the Hatch are more than a psychological experiment. For some reason, Henry wants the countdown to fully expire. Perhaps, he wants off the Island, or whatever it is and experience the real world. So I'm thinking the thing sealed off in the Hatch is some sort of conduit that keys into the electromagnetic source of the island (something similar to what Isaac mentioned) and keeps the island undetectable and invisible to the rest of the world. Idk, out of phase with reality?

Probably the most entertaining part of the episode was that Sawyer finally lost his hold on Kate. Since the survivors seem to reflect a notion of being constantly paired with each other, right now it was Kate and Sawyer. But Jack pulled her back. And at the end montage, Sawyer painstakingly accepts Vincent's company. One of the funniest bits this season. Almost beat Hurley in a toga for me.

Discloner,
If you're curious, the flashbacks for the next episode will be that of Ana Lucia's

Are you slipping in your old age, Mr. Fugate? images/smilies/wink.gifChalk it up to me actually getting interested in these newer episodes. Before I was so bored and annoyed with the characters or lack of action I was deliberately keeping an eye out for the Numbers, but lately I've been so engrossed it's hard to remember. Weird that I noticed Numbers in 24 this week though...maybe my thought processes are screwing up. Or perhaps some supernatural force is at work. I'm the age of 23, after all.

Hmmm...Rose and Bernard....YAAAAWWWWWNNNNNN.

Was this the dullest flashback ever, or what?

When I saw that this was going to be a Rose/Bernard flashback episode my first reaction was "Yay!" followed by, "Oh no, now the cute old couple is going to be revealed as a pair of escaped serial killers." Thankfully that wasn't the case.

I would've preferred that to what we actually got.

C'mon all you amateur detectives, is there any one of you who did not predict exactly how this episode would play out from the moment Rose said, "I'm dying."? The flashback was paint by the numbers.

The part with Jack and Kate was much more interesting. Jack is a better shot than Kate? I wouldn't have guessed that, and Kate certainly didn't. I was beginning to sour on Kate, but I'm starting to like her again now that she is becoming the show's version of Penelope Pitstop. Given her penchant for falling into traps and getting captured (by Desmond, Zeke's crowd, and now Rousseau's booby trap), how the hell did she manage to evade police custody for as long as she did.

I'm going to say "or what." The second Micheal flashback, or maybe the umpteenth Jack one were far more boring.

Eh, it could have gone in a few different directions and still have been "Lost-y." I actually felt that way about Hurley's ep last week, and figured Dave was imaginary from the moment he was mentioned. Even the Libby thing wasn't too surprising when you think about it. I figured their connection was from the hospital, but wasn't completely certain how exactly. But yeah, Dave as a means of punishing himself? Saw it coming from the start, even though when it was revealed it got the shock and surprise music.

I agree with Samhaine, the Michael flashback this season was by the far the most boring one of all. I'm glad we won't get anymore this season, and instead probably an account of his jungle fun escapades. I like the flashbacks for Rose and Bernard. Maybe, it's because I'm a closet sucker for romance in the most unexpected of meetings, sue me.

Since we know Bernard's a dentist, I'm a little interested in what occupation Rose had. I mean, she was driving a high end car if I can recall correctly. Off the bat, I want to say professor. I'll admit it, I was listening for noises similar to the invisible monster (ala the pilot episode) during the flashbacks. But ot no avail.
