View Full Version : Who should replace Jon Stewart in 2008?

Okay, so jon Stewart has signed on to The daily Show until 2008 right? It's unclear if he'll sign another contract afterwards, but I was thinking who should replace him if he ever does leave.

I really can't think of anyone, but I do have a thought. They could take The Daily Show and The Colbert Report and merge the two shows together to form something like, The Daily Report with Stephen Colbert and have all the correspondents migrate there. It'd be better than replacing Jon Stewart with some hack anyway.

As for an idea on who to replace Jon Stewart, I was thinking maybe Will Ferrel. I dunno. He's the only person I can imagine sitting behind the desk giving a news report.

Katie Couric... oh wait. :p

How about the guy who reads The Onion Radio News?

i doubt they'd merge The Daily Show & The Colbert Report
Colbert is awesome but by then, the network will want to infuse some new blood for the next generation of Daily Show viewers, someone younger w/ a cult following. Are there any up-and-comers out there? Maybe they're grooming Dimitri Martin (but does he have hosting potential?) Remember, even though '08 is just 21 months away, in television programming that's a long timespan.

Geez. Remember when 2008 was, like, forever away?

I really don't know who would be a good replacement at this point. Jon Stewart was an up-and-comer back when he started. (I'd never heard of him, at least.) They'll probably find another semi-unknown person who will bust out and rule the half-hour.

Maybe they're grooming Dimitri Martin (but does he have hosting potential?)Martin barely has comedy potential. I don't think I'd ever watch the show if they went with him (provided Stewart even leaves, he could sign a new contract).

well that's your opinion
I like his "Trendspotting" segments as well at his Comedy Central Presents special. He kinda reminds me of Eric Forman. Chances are he's only on as freelance/occassional bits like Lewis Black.

But as I said, they're probably going to cast a younger comedian & if D-Mart has a strong following CC is going to go w/ those numbers. Who knows, they may even poach from another network...perhaps one of the many personalities on "Best Week Ever" or "I Love The ___"

He should sign another contract and keep me watching.
Seriously, though? Either the "real, not being a cheesy (yet hilarious) character" Colbert, or Rob Corddry. Rob's the correspondant getting the most applause these days, IIRC.

I can't imagine the Daily Show w/o Stewart anchoring. I've never seen it when he wasn't.

So I'll hope that Stewart replaces himself by signing a contract. :anime:

Geez. Remember when 2008 was, like, forever away?Yes, since it's in our not too distant future, how about Mike Nelson?

Or Professor Bobo, he is our new Simian Overlord.

It took me a while to warm up to Rob as a correspondent. He's too loud.
Ed Helms would be a much better choice.

I hope Jon resigns (as in to sign up again). You would think it's a good gig, but I guess it's possible he may want to do other things with his career, like ballet.

But just to play the game,
How about Mo Rocca?
I miss him as a reporter.

Be happy you didn't. When Craig Kilborn hosted, it was funny, but it was basically absent of all of the things people like about the Daily Show today - that being, the biting political humor.

I wouldn't be suprised if Stewart were to sign a further extension. I think he likes the job and the seemingly very free place he's won himself at CC.

It would be a hell of a job trying to replace him. He's ended up taking a fun, but unimportant basic cable news show and turning it into something that can get important public figures to appear regularly.

And he got Crossfire cancelled (well, not directly, but...).

It's an intimidating legacy.

Colbert was and still is the obvious choice, but I can't know if he'll want to leave the Colbert Report. I imagine that will last for more than two more years, to say the least.

I'm not sure that I would want any of the current corrospondents to take over. I like them, but none of them seem like they could lead the show. I like Dimitri Martin too, but doesn't seem to be right for the anchor's chair.

I think that perhaps their best bet would be to try another relative unknown or only modestly famous comic.

Or me, I'd love the job, provided that they'd be willing to hire a fat, bearded, long haired neurotic unknown with enough self esteem issues and random yiddish phrases to seem like a jewish stereotype.

Well, a man can dream. And besides, it's better than my normal dreams about my fingernails beïng long enough to require trimming.

I miss him as a reporter.
Or maybe Denny Siegel, as she's not doing anything right now television or movie-wise. And I never got to see her when she was on the show in 1999.

You're not missing much. Craig Kilborn isn't funny. At all.

Might it be absorbed into the Colbert Report?

Steve Carrel would be a good replacement, but I don't see him doing the Daily Show.

I'd personally enjoy seeing David Cross take the helm, but I don't see that happening either. It would rule though.

I wouldn't be surprised if Stewart signs another contract to stay on the show. Atleast from my position (As a viewer), as uninformed a position as can be, seems like he enjoys his spot. The gig lets him write and host a near-daily show while gaining popularity in the process. I mean the Daily Show let him write a book and host the Oscars...Nothing Death to Smoochy or Doogal would do.

Typically people give up their positions when they've got something to fall back on (or something they aspire to achieve) but to me it seems like Stewart simply found the right gig for him, that lets him do other stuff as well. Can't get much better for him can it?

I highly doubt Jon would leave and I think the obvious choice to replace him if he did would be Stephen Colbert as far as current people involved with things like this. He's the only one I could really see being able to take the anchor chair. He did it well as a replacement for Jon in the past when Jon couldn't be there and he does it well on The Report.

But please, not Rob Corddry. He was awful in the anchor spot when Jon's wife had their baby and he's become little more than a rip-off of Stephen Colbert for a while now.

With Colbert having his own show, and Lewis Black getting one soon, they seem to be off-limits on hosting The Daily Show.

I honestly could see it end with Stewart, but if not, it'd either go to a correspondent or a relative unknown.

Who knew Jon would be so great at this?
It was quite a transition seeing him in a suit. He was always that guy from MTV in a leather jacket.
Well, actually now that I think about it, I guess maybe Garry Shandling knew.

It would be a hell of a job trying to replace him. He's ended up taking a fun, but unimportant basic cable news show and turning it into something that can get important public figures to appear regularly. And he turned it into one of the most respected news programs on cable television. How hilarious and sad is that?
Be happy you didn't. When Craig Kilborn hosted, it was funny, but it was basically absent of all of the things people like about the Daily Show today - that being, the biting political humor.I laughed quite a lot when Kilborn did the show.
Although I did stop watching for awhile because I felt he was coming across as jerk and I sure didn't follow him to CBS.
Or maybe Denny Siegel, as she's not doing anything right now television or movie-wise. And I never got to see her when she was on the show in 1999.Actually, I don't remember her on the show so much.
It was always Beth Littleford that everyone went ga-ga over.
I'm not saying she would be bad though.
I think the thread starter just meant in general, not on The Daily Show. What, you mean take over his duties as a husband and father too?
What does his wife look like? Delthayre needs to know.
With Colbert having his own show, and Lewis Black getting one soon, they seem to be off-limits on hosting The Daily Show.

A half hour of Lewis Black every night is more hell then I can deal with.
Some people need to be taken in small or occasional doses.

I don't think any of the correspondents would be suited to anchor...the underlying point of Jon's role is to be the voice of common sense and the reaction of the average person. The correspondents are meant to further demonstrate the leaps in logic that the world is so full of. The correspondents play characters...Jon is the observer commentary.

While I hope Jon stays with TDS until he dies (or his floating-head batteries die ;) ), if he were to leave, it'd be really tough to replace him. I wouldn't mind someone like Conan O'Brien, as he'd grab a lot more viewers and remain funny...but he's unlikely to leave his own show anytime soon.

How bout John Henson? He used to have a show, then he left it to pursue other things, and he was never heard from again. I think his run on Talk Soup can be compared to the likes of Conan O'Brien on Late Night. Not necessarily as equals in the same field, but as the embodiment of perfection on their respective shows.
