Didn't it used to be that she had to have the shards to pass through to her time?

No. She did it in the third episode IIRC.

I think the anime tried and claimed that she needed them to go back and forth, but she obviously doesn't. She and Inuyasha can pass freely between both times.

She needs them to go to the feudal era, Inuyasha doesn't need them at all.

Only she and Inuyasha? What about others, friends who hang out with them?

Yes, this is a plot hole that the anime created that didn't exist in the manga. In the episode where Inuyasha told Kagome to never return, he took the jewel shards and pushed her down the well to return her to her own time. Kagome tried to go back to the feudal era, but she couldn't. The anime made her think she needed the jewel shards to cross over, but in reality she couldn't go back because Inuyasha had shoved a tree down the well.
She only managed to return through the well with the tree stuck there by "reaching" for the jewel shards that had fallen down there, thus allowing her to travel through time despite the confined space in the well.
Confused? Don't look at me, this is Rumiko Takahashi's plot...

That's the arc that I got this from. Was this filler or did this actually happen in the manga? I know you say it didn't exist in the manga but then you mention Rumiko was involved.

Yes, this arc did happen in the original manga; it was the "jewel shard well travel" plot hole that wasn't in the manga. It was the anime that added in that nonsense of Kagome saying she needs the jewel shards to travel through the well; the manga never said anything like that. Everything else is more or less close to the manga.

So it was just the tree that blocked her off in the manga. Stupid anime producers...
