When Eva started airing on AS I mentioned the similar-sounding names and was told in short order that no one would confuse the two. Consider me schooled, but still, am I the only one who's noticed the similarities between the two?
The aforementioned names: Motoko Kusanagi and Misato Katsuragi.
Rank - both majors. (I know, this doesn't work until Episode 10 or so of Eva) And they're both in the same position: operations director and, um, I'm not sure of the Major's official position. They're both in charge of missions, answering only to some guy with a beard and a past.
Appearance - both on the purple side of brunette, both drop-dead gorgeous, undeniably physically attractive, official bad-*ss babes with very impressive physical assets.
Pasts - both went through severe childhood traumas with massive physical and psychological scarring.
Both are quite aware of what they have and won't hesitate to use same to get what they want or what they deem necessary for the ends of the organization they serve, a secretive paramilitary organization about which the public is mostly and necessarily ignorant.
Both have at least one man carrying a bit of a torch for her, or so some have implied - Hyuga and Batou respectively.
Both have a soft side where certain children are concerned, although who among us doesn't.
And last week on tv, both made an indelicate offer to the last type of person who would refuse such an offer, but who did.
And before there's any flameage, I am very aware of the big differences between the two. Motoko is an introvert, Misato an extrovert; Motoko seems a bit uptight or even anal while Misato is anything but; Motoko is rarely seen off the clock while Misato is about the half the time; Motoko it would seem doesn't have emotions while Misato is rather reckless with her emotions; and while Motoko is the only prominent female character on her show, Misato is very much not.
