So what's up with the two different DVD collections for Evangelion? Platinum Collection is 1/3 the price of Perfect Collection, but Perfect is older? Is Platinum edited down or something? Which box set should I get if I'm more interested in the sub than the dub?

The Platinum collection has remastered video and audio, booklets jam packed with information about the Angels, characters, etc. (if you buy them separately instead of in the boxset), and the Director's Cut versions of episodes 21-24 in addition to the originals.

So yeah, that's the one.

The best deal is the Platinum collection from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000767QTA/qid=1143180874/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-1223053-8079001?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=130).

The Perfect collection is more of a completist super-fan choice because it includes a few more special features. However, the Platinum edition is a far better choice not only because of the cheaper price, but the far higher quality of the episodes. The digital remastering is far and away the best thing that ever happened to Eva...it's simply astonishing how much the series looks and sounds better compared to what airs on AS.

So simply put, go for the Platinum collection...as someone that just bought it a week ago, I can tell you that I'm HUGELY satisfied with my investment, it's the best DVD purchase I've made in the past year.

Platinum thinpack is the most solid choice, 60 bucks or so for all 26 episodes and the 4 DCs? Yes please.

Sweet cover art too

Go get the platinum. Perfect Collection while it comes in a much nicer box still has that overlit look the AS repeats have had.

what about death and rebirth of evangelion? is it worth getting?
from amazon.com i read that it only has about 5 minutes of new footage,

but since the price (at least in amazon) between the EoE and the two pack of both EoE and death and rebirth iis only 3$ more, i'm thinking i'll just buy it anyways..

What are you talking about? The only Non-Platinum extra or any of the DVDs is an interview with the WETA people for the live-action Eva movie on the Director's Cut DVDs, unless you count character bios as extras.

I suggest the single-volume Eva Platinum DVDs. Unless you don't care about extras, then get the Thinpak set.

Well, I can't say that I don't care at all about extras, but getting the entire series remastered + directors' cut episodes for under $50 is pretty irresistible. It'd be nice to have the extras, but I'm sure the guides and other information are incorporated in Wikipedia articles and such. And really, the series is not hard to follow or understand as long as you're patient.

If you get the thin set you miss out on this little hidden gem (http://shinjismind.ytmnd.com/) (f-word warning, ending spoilers).

That was pure awesomeness, especially the last line.

That was awesome, never heard of that before..."The movie better sure as hell better make up for this!"

But I'm just a much bigger fan of the updated look, it takes 6 years off of it...and I'm cheap, so having 6 DVDs and free shipping for only 46.65 was just too awesome of a deal to pass up.

Dude, EoE gives Evangelion an ENTIRE NEW ENDING. You're making it sound like it's just a couple of snippets of remastered Angel battles or something.

You know, Spike has that as part of his demo reel on his agent's website (he moved to LA). Good stuff.

Best thing from NGE I have ever heard. LOL! Pretty much what Shinji said is what I've been asking myself about this series so far.

He's talking about the first movie, Death & Rebirth. Death is a character-based recap of the series, though it features new scenes of Second Impact. Rebirth is the first 20 minutes of End of Eva. No, not a summary, the exact first 20 minutes.
