According to Billy West:

I'm thisclose to selling my show--''Billy Bastard--Amateur Human Being,''
And the other good news is that they're doing 26 new episodes of
''Futurama'' for TV and we're hammering out the deal now.The original
plan was to have the DVD's first but that's no longer the case.I'm totaly
jammed dude.

Greetings from the year 3000! It still sucks!

Billy

Edit: And now hopes come crashing down

Guys,
I'm sorry I gave inaccurate info on the cartoon.I was told on one end that the
TV show was a go but DXC enlightened me (with a hammer) that this was
not the case.I think there is a Futurama project as in DVD's but I appearently
had bad info. But I do live to give good Futurama news to people. So I must've
died or something.

All eyes on the skies,

Billy

Would this air on FOX or Adult Swim?

FOX, though I'm sure AS would try to get the rights similar to the situation with Family Guy.

Okay, thanks.

I really am getting excited about this. Futurama is the best animated series. I hope Fox gives it a better time slot this time around. NFL killed it before.

hopefully they're better than the last season of Futurama episodes were. I hope AS gets these new seasons but it would be weird if they only got these after time runs out for the old episodes

Doubt it. They're losing it to Comedy Central in 2008.

Thats a long way off yet. Anyway, as long as I get new episodes, it doesn't really matter to me what station it is on.

Thats a long way off yet.

Animation is a very long process though. Since they haven't started working on these new Futurama epiodes yet (and I assume they'll only start in the summer/fall) they won't be finished till at least late 2007, and considering they'd air on FOX first, I doubt that CN would get the eps unless the contract was changed or something.

That is good news about the show. I'm hoping that this allows for a renewal of the show (beyond just one season) , but dosen't drag the quality down like Family Guy.

I hope they don't ruin this show like they did The Simpsons. It seems to be Matt Groening started lowering quality of The Simpsons right after Futurama was cancelled. Revenge, maybe?

More accurately, it's "17-year-old program syndrome." TV shows age in dog years. Nothing can keep its freshness that long, not even The Simpsons.

Futurama, however, has only had seventy-something episodes and four produced seasons. I have faith in the Planet Express Crew--I know they can deliver.

I honestly don't care all that much at this point. I mean, Adult Swim will be losing the rights to Comedy Central in 2008, so it won't help them that much, and to be honest I never really liked Futurama all that much. I always thought it was too mean spirited at times.

My earlier woohoo still stands, but something about this issue came to mind. How reliable is Billy's information likely to be? Seems like every few months or so we hear something new from him about this. Has any other source made any statements?

Comedy Central paid for Futurama per episode, meaning that they bought the rights to every existing season. They would have to make another offer for the new ones.

Actually, I think it was Futurama was the death of The Simpsons but not as revenge. The show started going downhill around when Futurama was just hitting it's stride (2000-2002).

Ugh. It's so fashionable to make fun of Family Guy these days. The fact is, it's as good as it ever was, people just don't like it because it's popular now, it's new again, and they overanalyze every little thing the show does just to nitpick.

Futurama is probably the best cartoon to be made so here's hoping it doesn't get pissed up. =[

However, I don't recall suddenly hating Family Guy when it was still rerunning and suddenly everyone in the world was quoting it. I don't really recall hating the first few new episodes either... I think the new season just genuinely sucks and there's not much else to it.

I think it's 'two-show syndrome'. Since Seth has American Dad and Family Guy going on at the same time, American Dad happens to be the superior of the two having the more original comedy while Family Guy falls back on its cutaways and pop culture references that really aren't funny anymore. I think the same could be said for Futurama and The Simpsons. Futurama was a new show with a different brand of humor than the Simpsons, so it seemed that all efforts were put on it while the Simpsons just fell back to a formulatic show.

Hurray for the fans! :) I'm not sure what to think, Futurama for me is one of those shows where I'm either in the mood to watch it or not in the mood. I'll watch the new episodes (might as well, I've already seen the others.) But yeah, my guess is Comedy Central will probably try to get the rights to those for a higher bid. BTW, since we have all noticed ratings for Futurama were down on AS, they probably won't get much higher once they come to Comedy Central (all they bought were reruns. The episodes people have seen thousands of times.)

I'm not jumping up and down with joy either. There was a time when I wanted Futurama to come back, back when it would have helped Adult Swim. But, now Comedy Central is getting the rights, and it's not like they're going to do anything useful with the show. And if Adult Swim somehow does manage to get the rights to these new episodes then they'll probably just end up repeating these 26 episodes on weekdays over and over again, and does anyone really want to see that?

Come on Evolution, JCA, Megas, Teen Titans, and JLU!

Futurama's return may have been rumored a lot, but plenty of people said it would never happen, and at this point it seemed like we were just getting the DTVs.

A whole new season is rockin' news for me.

Not to seem like I'm raining on the parade here, but I'm not jumping or screaming or doing ANYTHING untill a press release from FOX. It seems like a a new rumor every 6 weeks or so, and not for nothing, but I'm getting a case of "Rumor" fatigue. Awesome if true, but I'm not getting my hopes up yet.

Case in point with Family Guy, rumors and all, but when FOX released it, Seth himself said it, and Variety, E, Entertainment weekly reported it, then I believed it.

It's sounding like he's the into 'shoot mouth off first, gather facts later' method of spreading 'news'.

I'm actually kind of happy that the rumor was debunked. I mean, maybe now we can finally let Futurama die. I mean, I wanted new Futurama a year ago, but now I just want it to die...or rather let it stay dead. I mean, maybe a DTV would be okay, but I don't see any point in reviving the series at this point. While it used to get ratings on the same level as Family Guy, those times are no longer. And it's DVD sales were never on the same level as Family Guy. I just don't think it would be popular enough to revive. I say just let it stay dead already.

Could an impartial judge please declare a winner soon, otherwise somebody might make an ass of himself.

As for me, I'm dissapointed, but not terribly suprised. A new television season seemed like a rather dramatic commitment that I would've expected to hear some more initial buzzing and humming about prior to any definitive announcement. I do regard it as a pity, however, I would've liked to see another season tried. I admit rather reserved enthusiasm since Family Guy's revival has dissapointed me so badly, but I generally do not consider one unfortunate venture to have soured the idea outright. Besides, Futurama had more to continue on in terms of character and story than Family Guy.

In any case, the direct-to-DVD movies are still coming and in the case that they sell well, maybe the idea of further seasons could regain its legs. I admit some pessimism on that point, however, since Futurama wasn't the DVD success that Family Guy was.

I'm pretty sure the DVDs were reported in TV Guide initially, those are definitely coming.

It sucks we aren't getting a new season, but if these sell well, that could be the next step.

Guys, do you seriously think that a promise of 4 full-length DTV movies isn't enough? Actually continuing the series just opens of the possibility of it going down the toilet rather than ending on the strong note that it did.

thats very true, 4 DTV movies is more than we could have hoped for, and if futurama did return as a series, it could possibly start to decline in quality.. but still... i would of liked to see futurama return as a show again because i still say it was too early for it to be cancelled and the team probably had a lot of unused ideas for the show, an i woulda liked ta have seen em :(
