...I point the way to ArmJoe (http://armjoe.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ArmJoe.htm)a fighting game based on the musical LeMiserables (which was based on the Victor Hugo novel).
It's a freeware game but you have to be registered for some service to download the latest version from the link the site gives; although you can find an older version elsewhere on the internet if you look.
The game uses ASCII's Fighter Maker program so it is a bit technically behind the times and the game seems to be very much a work in progress in terms of gameplay, character balance, and AI; but the character design and animation seems nicely done (but not all the characters are there yet).
