Since today, or tomorrow depend how fast the game get here, is the release of MGS: Subtinence I decide to do a talkback for Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, that are include with the game, for those of us who were either too young or didn't live in Japan or never play the original NES version.

Metal Gear
In 1995, 200km north of Galzburg, South Africa, lies Outer Heaven, a fortified state founded by a legendary mercenary in the late 1980s. Word had gotten out to the western world that deep within the Outer Heaven stronghold, a weapon of mass destruction was being constructed. Government officials order the high-tech Special Forces unit FOXHOUND to infiltrate the fortress, assess the situation and neutralize the threat. In a mission known as "Operation: Intrude N313," FOXHOUND operative Gray Fox infiltrated the Outer Heaven stronghold. Days later, contact with Gray Fox is lost and his last transmission simply reads "METAL GEAR..."
Operative Solid Snake, FOXHOUND's newest recruit, is ordered by leader Big Boss to rescue Gray Fox and carry out his mission.
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (Not to be confuse with the crappy Snake Revenge)
In the game, Solid Snake must infiltrate Zanzibar Land (not to be confused with the real-life Zanzibar that is part of Tanzania), a heavily defended territory described to be located between The Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China.
Snake's mission is to rescue a scientist who has created bacteria that secrete artificial petroleum, and to seek out and destroy Metal Gear.
Discuss was it as good as 3d one, did you like the story, etc

Both were cool games but the NES version of the first one was weak compared to the MSX version and it came out even on C64 but didn't come out on 16/32 bit systems like Genesis, SNES, Amiga or Atari ST, there was nothing bad about the MSX but outside Japan even Sega Master System and TG-16 was more known then the MSX.
Think how cool a SNES version of Metal Gear 2 would have been.

I visited GameStop today and the man told me they'll give out the reserves tomorrow. Today is apparently merely the ship day.

With these two games coming with MGS3, I shall have a complete Metal Gear Collection
I have MGS,MGS2, Metal Gear Solid:Ghost Babel(the GBC game), and Metal Gear Acid(and pretty soon Metal Gear Acid 2)
Wait, does Snake's Revenge Count though?
I rmember seeing the Original MGS game in action, and I remember having the Top-down view confuse the hell out of me and the fact that jumping was non-existant.

Do you have Substance and Twin Snakes as well? And while Snake's Revenge sucks and is non-canon, I guess it counts as part of the series... Even if it has nothing to do with anything.

Snakes Revenge is non cannon, however, it did pave the way for MG 2 to be made.
SO without it, the world of MGS would be a very diffrenct place indeed.

MG2:SS is arguably the best in the franchise and now you have no excuse not to play it. I wonder how the translation will compare to the fanmade one.
Metal Gear 2 rules from what I've played of it. I'm kinda dissapointed that Big Boss won't look like Sean Connery in Substience though.

I vaguely remember renting the original NES version way back in the day. I was still fairly new to video games of that type and therefore had considerable difficulty with the game. I wouldn't mind another shot at it now that I'm a more experienced gamer, but I'm not quite at the point where I'd try to hunt down a copy.

Eh, looks like I'm going to have to wait a bit more to play these
Gamestop messed up my reserve on the Limited Edition and instead gave me a regular edition(they over-did it on the reserves). So I had to then re-reserve the limited edition so I can get it in the next shipment.
If all else fails I ordered the Limited Edition over at Barnesandnoble.com
It says MGS3:Substance, but it's price and description is that of the Limited Edition

Whatever Gamestop told you is a lie, I work there and can tell you that the LE for Subsistence never had a reserve skew in the computer. The limited editions are really limited too my store only received two of them, but we received around 30-40 copies of the regular edition.
Honestly the LE is pretty much for hardcore fans or collectors only because it's just the regular Subsistence in a box with the theater DVD in a seperate DVD case. I went ahead and picked up the LE, but for people who aren't huge fans or collectors, save the $10 and pick up the regular edition.

They took the reserve manually, that's what annoys me. The same people who took the reserve were there selling the games. I even refereshed their memory of me making the reserve(they had a heck of a time finding it in the CPU).
They even had an LE on the counter, they said it was reserved though. But they said an LE would be in the next shipment and I could transfer my reserve there.
So I didn't know what the hell was going on,and they apparently received two as well, infact I saw both copies
Honestly I hate when they make a rareity of something to this extent, this is why I don't collection Action Figures

The thing about Gamestop is their computers are still running on DOS until June or July when we switch over to EBs system. Currently nothing is stored in the computer it's all manual and chances are someone either didn't hold you a LE because they simply filed your reserve and thought nothing of it. Like I said in my above post there was no possible way to reserve the LE because even if someone wrote LE on the reserve the store was still only getting a couple in and what you saw were probably being held for an employee or someone else.

According to previews I've seen, the Connery-alike portrait has been changed.

Again, not much of a difference.

Right one just seems more generic to me.

Well, I'm a fan and collector (you forgot "Document of MGS2" up there, which can still be found online cheap). I now have a complete PS2 MGS collection, whee!
Regarding your GameStop only getting two Limited Edition copies: I caught a glimpse of the drawer when they pulled mine out, and there were about twenty in there. I don't know where you live, though. This is a city GameStop, so they might be getting more copies to satisfy a higher demand....

Heh. I just got out Nintendo Power Vol. 4. The one that covers Metal Gear for the NES. This is verbatim:
Mission Objective: Destroy Metal Gear!
The last message received from Agent Grey Fox mysteriously said "Metal Gear" and nothing more. After 24 hours without further contact it could only be assumed that the "Outer Heaven" Group has captured him. No one really knows what "Metal Gear" is, but it's for certain that if Colonel Vermon CaTaffy, the insane but brilliant strategist of "Outer Heaven" has conceived it, this project has to be stopped. Fox Hounder needs another top notch commando to infiltrate "Outer Heaven", locate and rescue Agent Grey Fox and destroy project "Metal Gear." Only one man fits that bill and that man is Agent Solid Snake. Join the Fox Hounder Group's newest operative in his impossible mission--the destruction of an unknown weapon in a base created by a madman!

Actually, there was a reserve SKU for the LE of Subsistance in the Gamestop computers, it was only up for about 2 weeks and that was nearly a month ago. I had a reserve for the Limited Edition, and I got mine.

I also reserved a copy of the limited edition for myself and got it yesterday. I'm not quite sure why my store got 8 copies with only 3 reserves.

Well from 4 reserves including mine, my local Gamestop got about 30 copies of Subsistance and 2 copies of the LE, one of those LE being mine.

Big Boss on the right has a wider face, and he doesn't bear the same striking resemblance to Connery. He doesn't bear any resemblance to him outside of maybe the beard. I picked up MGS 3 S: LE last night and loved playing it tonight. It's the first day-one purchase I've made in a year, and it was worth it.

Well I finally beat Metal Gear 1. Man, was it hard. Everytime I got discover there were like 6 soldiers surrounding me without a place to hide. Right now I playing MG: SS it seem easier thant the first. I hope one day Kojima does a remake of this games. Although they had to be put together since they are short.

They weren't thrown together because they're short. They take up very little space on the DVD, and it makes sense to put both on the disc instead of just one. I just played the first and found it to be very enjoyable. I'll play the second one tomorrow after hopping online tonight.
