The Frieza Saga on Cartoon Network

http://www.geocities.com/gohan2000_nz/Frieza_Saga_Gm.jpg

Last week, Goku completed his spirit bomb attack and launched it at Frieza. For a few moments it seemed as though Goku had actually defeated Frieza, but the victory was short lived. Damaged only in pride and missing a portion of his tail, Frieza was back! Picking up where he had left off the tyrant made short work of Krillin and Piccolo. The loss of his friends pushed Goku over the edge and the legend was born: Goku had become a super saiyan! And now the Goku has become more powerful than Frieza what lengths will Frieza go to regain his edge?

The battle continues this week with these episodes:

Mon - Namek's Destruction
Finding Goku's newfound Super Saiyan strength to be too much for him, Frieza directs his attack at the planet Namek itself! Unable to react in time, Goku is forced to watch helplessly as Frieza's energy blast tears through the heart of the once tranquil planet. Things look bleak for the mighty Saiyan and his friends as the fiery explosion rips through Namek's core! Can anyone survive such incredible destruction?

Tues - A Final Attack
With only minutes to go before the planet explodes, Goku launches a ferocious assault against the weakened Frieza. But Frieza proves that he has a few tricks left up his sleeve as he begins to gather the energy he needs to achieve 100% of his true power! Meanwhile, Gohan races to bring Bulma back to Goku's spaceship as Namek crumbles around them. Can Goku defeat Frieza in time to rejoin his son and fly to safety, or is the fully energized Frieza too powerful for even the Super Saiyan to handle?

Wed - Approaching Destruction
The two most powerful forces in the universe collide as the battle between Goku and Frieza rages on. Back on Earth, the seven Dragon Balls have been collected, and King Kai devises a plan that may save his friends on Namek and put an end to the evil Frieza. But with Namek's final destruction imminent, can Kame and Popo use the Dragon Balls before it's too late?

Thurs - Gohan Returns
The first stage of King Kai's plan is complete, and all of Frieza's victims have been wished back to life. But while the people of Namek begin to rise again, the mighty Super Saiyan Goku falls as Frieza launches a devastating final assault. Sensing his father's defeat, Gohan rushes to the scene as the universe's last hope against the seemingly invincible Frieza. Can Gohan succeed where Goku failed, or will this be the end of both father and son?

And the colossal battle continues. Anyone notice Guldo's head still intact? Yep, way to stay consistent with the Uncut run.

Frieza getting pissed just like how any DBZ villain would on the losing end.

POW! Right in the kisser!
POW! Right in the kisser!
POW! Right in the kisser!

That cracks me up every time. I like the scene with Freiza's henchmen as they try to locate him in that base. Very comic book.

Kami has a case of indigestion, huh? That's funny.

And so begins the longest 'five minutes' in history.

"You will experience the ULTIMATE Frieza!" Oh you poor sap, Frieza. :p

well five minutes lasted that long, and then look at how long Goku's "day" on Earth lasted. I think they were trying to be consistent in their times at least.

Another fun episode has passed. Once again, Frieza showing us how desperate he is by launching a blast directly through the planet's core.

Seeing Frieza getting pissed off is always funny to watch since there's nothing he can do to even hurt Goku anymore. Hey, it's your own fault. Never make Goku mad. ;)

I feel pretty bad for Chi-Chi though worrying over her son and husband.

Now, we'll get to see the 'ULTIMATE Frieza' tonight. Should be good tonight. :anime:

"Namek's Destruction" gets a 4.4/5.

too bad "ultimate frieza" didnt shape change once more to look more like Cooler's last form.

Here we go, Frieza's powerup to his 100% form. Let the grunts commence.:p

Damn, I just love how their auras just make contact and cause their surroundings to blow apart.

"I won't let your sacrifice go in vain, Krillin. He HAD no right!"

"Come on! Just a bit more, almost there!" Frieza's been packing those 'roids.

"Time to squash you like a bug!" "All of that waiting and this is how you thank me?" - Funny exchange there but doesn't top the classic "Turn you on" one-liner by the tyrant.

Man, Goku's taking a beating here. This is one of Frieza's only attempts at taking the offensive at this point.

"Whatever turn you on, big boy." Man I love Frieza's one liners. You can't never get tired of them. hehe.

That "Big boy" thing always makes me think. See sometimes, it seems that Kids Cartoon shows when compared to anime dubbed to the level of kids cartoon shows are allowed to get away with more. Since it was made (well besides animation) in America or whatever and there is more direct control with the content. But sometimes, things will slip in dubs that will make it seem the other way around. Dende's "Don't Piss off the god of love" and this. I mean it's pretty much a direct gay euphisim, espically with how Freeza delievers it. I doubt you could get away with that in an American Cartoon.

Yesterday's ep is one of the more intense parts of the fights, until next week, where the action really starts to boil. It also has some of the fastest movement in all of the show (I mean yeah the characters get a lot faster as the show progresses, but besides the Cell fight, It never LOOKS like Goku is moving as fast as he is against Freeza when compared to anyone else).

Y'know, I wish they kept Goku's original dialogue for waiting for Freeza's powerup, saying Kuririn was his best friend. It's one of the few times Goku is clearly picking favorites. Usually, Goku seems to have this 'I like everyone about the same' affection, or is very subtle about who he likes. In Dragon Ball, Goku's vengeance for Kuririn seemed little different from his vengeance for Bora against Taopipi. Here, he spits it out that Kuririn is his best friend, and he wants to avenge him. If it was Yamucha or Tenshinhan who died at Freeza's hands, Goku wouldn't have confessed that level of affection.
Geez, I find it hard hearing Sonny Strait as Kuririn. Reminds me of Hughes...

1. Surprised nobody's talking about what Frieza said on Monday's episode? It's worse than that gay line.

2. I should have watched Tuesday's. I love watching the dub beginning and imagining in all the blood.

Server problem prevented me from doing a review for last night's episode. So now, I have my chance to do so.

A bunch of memorable one-liners from ol' Frieza, especially the 'gay-esudo' comment. That always manages to get a chuckle from me.

Anyway, yesterday's episode was intense as soon as Frieza's power-up was complete. The 'ULTIMATE' Frieza has holding his own there for a while until Goku regained control. I especially liked it when the surrounding area exploded when their auras expanded. That's just so awesome.

"Because this battle is far from over."

I really wish they had kept the original dialogue, too, when Goku was mentioning Krillin.

"A Final Attack" receives a 4.5/5 for me. Good fightning and once again looking forward to more daily DBZ action. Season 4 can't get here anytime soon. :anime:

This was an average episode overall. Some funny exchanges between Kami and King Kai.

"How's the weather, Kami?"

"The weather's doing well, King Kai."

Heh. The intense fight between Frieza and Goku continues. I swear that was some of the most annoying screaming Frieza demonstrated.

There was some good action but tomorrow we'll get to see Gohan in action. :anime:

"Approaching Destruction" gets a 4.3/5

Even though Gohan gets his butt handed to him, I always enjoy this bit of filler. Gohan gets some action. :anime:

Now, he's gone back to being a pompous ass (Frieza that is).

Yay! Vegeta and the Nameks are back.

Go, Gohan!! MASENKO!!

"This is the end of the road for you, kid."

"BUT HOW?! I KILLED YOU!" - Welcome back Paranoia Frieza.

Are you talking about the American Funi intro?

Oh, don't mind me. I'm just nit-picking as usual (which I shouldn't be doing). I knew an edit wouldn't be consistent with the Uncut dub. All I'm saying is that it was pretty funny seeing Guldo's head intact.

Perhaps, but you just never know.

Anyway, this episode was pretty good. We got to see Gohan in action and trying to hold off Frieza (to no avail as I may add). Always nice to see a change in pace and I enjoyed this piece of filler.

Nice to see the Namekians and Vegeta back to life. Now, Guru is back along with Porunga. The wishes can now be granted. :anime:

Now Goku's back in the game and ready to continue where he left off. Now it gets even more intense this coming week.

"Gohan Returns" gets a 4.6/5

With the wish that brought the Namekians and Vegeta back, did Krillin come back as well? If not, why not? I don't remember enough about the end of the Freiza saga to remember how and when he comes back.

Krillin was already revived by Shenron back in Dragonball, and he can't wish anyone back to life more than once.

I can certainly answer this for you. You see, the Earth's Dragonballs can only wish someone back to life once. Krillin died once before in Dragonball. So, no go for Krillin.

If you can recall, Krillin does come back as they wished him back to life using the Namekian Dragonballs (who can wish a person to life as many times as long as it is not a natural death) and they transferred his soul to a relocation of souls on Earth (I think, somebody correct me if I'm wrong). He comes back to life on the final episode of the entire Frieza Saga.

Does that answer your questions?

Edit: Duke beat me to it. Thanks, Duke.

so what is Goku doing all of that time up until he comes back to save Gohan

djthomp

Does that answer your questions?
Ahh, oh yeah, thats it. I knew that about the earth dragonballs, and that he was wished back to life previously. For some reason I was thinking that they wished him back through a loophole in the earth dragonball rules (something about it being a different wish, and him coming back since he wasn't specifically named in the wish...clearly not the case though), and I was wondering why it didn't work now if it worked later. I did not either realize or remember that the Namekian dragonballs had that particular rule different, and that they were used on earth before the Namekians left.

check back with Toonami after A Month of Miyazaki is over with, i'm sure you'll find what you're looking for sitting in the 7:30 slot.

Ultra Mike
03-27-2006, 10:21 PM
It kind of sucks though that DBZ got put on Toonami Saturdays. IMHO it deserves more of a weekday run then One Piece so it can cycle through the Garlic Junior and Andriod Saga Episodes (I mean how long do you really think that Season 3 of DBZ will be on Toonami anyway? Looks like a filler slot to me until new programming comes). We'll be lucky to run through the entire Garlic Junior saga on that slot, let alone getting any of the trunks and andriod saga seen.

But then again there's an obvious reason why OP is on instead of DBZ; It got higher ratings. I think that originally DBZ was suppose to be on weekdays instead of OP after the AS move, but then OP's ratings increased or something and plans changed. Oh well.

FireStarterLE
03-27-2006, 10:25 PM
yeah normally when they make a move like that it almost announces that when a replacement is found for that 7:30 spot, DBZ will leave once more.

I still think DBZ would have still been a good lead into Adult Swim.

Just turned the TV on, and yes, there was Fry and Bender, instead of Frieza and Goku.

I changed the channel back to the Classical Music channel I was watching.
It's too early at night for Futurama.

I would think that CN would want to have DBZ on more than OP because it seemed like many people wanted to see the seasons that have not been seen for years. But well maybe they will bring it back soon since I don't really want to see the hacked-chopped-diced-minced-piece.

Yeah, this killed my theories of DBZ reaching the Android/Imperfect Cell Saga on weeknights. Tis a shame really.

Why can't they show Season 4 again? Last I checked they showed the first two episodes of the Android Saga back in '03 before it was taken off the air (during Toonami's daily run).

Edit: Nevermind, I remember during the DBZ tribute weeks (weeks before the debut of Saturday Toonami) they played three episodes of the Cell Saga (the ones where Trunks faces Perfect Cell)

Now DBZ's going to be on Saturday Toonami but we'll only get lucky to even get through all of the Garlic Jr. Saga. It'll be a miracle if we ever see the Android Saga if DBZ continues once a week at 7:30 PM.

I don't know about you but I would have rather had something like Inuyasha (instead of Futurama) following DBZ on weeknights. This sucks... Guess I'll be sticking to my DVDs and CN-On Demand for DBZ Season 4.

It's taking me a long time to finish this series. I started watching DBZ a few years ago and CN decided to stop running the Frieza saga. Ten months of waiting and they continued it, only to stop with those two Androids episodes. Eight months later, I couldn't take it anymore and I began purchasing the DVD's (I'm at the beginning of Cell Games).

Summary: CN needs to pick a schedule and stick with it. My TV Guide channel said DBZ was on at 10 and they've changed it again.

BTW, which sagas make up Seasons 4 and 5?

Yeah, One Piece has the 10 PM spot (don't know why. Ratings I guess. )

Ah, Season 4 consists of the ENTIRE Android/Cell Saga. That's 77 whooping episodes there, my friend. That's the Trunks, Androids, Imperfect Cell, Perfect Cell and Cell Games Sagas.

Season 5 consists of the Great Saiyaman, World Tournament, Babidi and the first six episodes of the Majin Buu Saga.

Hope that helpes and I even avoided spoilers for you. What are you thoughts on Season 4 so far by watching your DVDs? :)

I don't know about you but I would have rather had something like Inuyasha (instead of Futurama) following DBZ on weeknights.

I would of too but there's a few problems with that.

1. Inuyasha Is an Adult Swim Show. There's no way they would have it on the regular line up block before AS.

2. Just in case you were talking about 10PM DBZ and then AS STARTING with 10:30PM Inuyasha (as offical part of the AS block) wouldn't happen either. See Adult Swim seperates comedy from action shows. The last action show to get a top spot on AS that wasn't on a saturday was Big O 2, and that's only because CN paid for some of the series, and that kind of flopped anyway. See they always start with comedy since that gets the highest ratings. Thus why they moved Futurama to 10:30, put they're highest original series (Aqua Teen, Robot Chicken, Harvey Birdman, plus repeats of the new episodes of Minorteam and RC on Thursdays) at 11PM, kept Family guy at 11:30, and moved Oblongs to 12PM (since it's the other highest scoring acqusition they have after Family Guy and Futrama) except for Thursdays which has Boondocks repeats on it. Action is only after that and will only be see seen then. Yeah it's pretty unfair but hey it's the best they can hope for if they're not getting the comedy shows ratings.

Jedah Dohma
03-28-2006, 11:51 AM
Yeah, I was actually referring to the second scenario of 10PM DBZ followed by AS' new start time at 10:30 PM with Inuyasha.

I see your point and I can't argue with that. I really don't mind Futurama at that time just saying I'd rather have an action show following an action show. Hope that clears everything up.

I'm having a blast seeing both versions. Sometimes the Japanese dub works more than the English dub, and vice versa (same goes for the music). I wish they included all the episode previews though.

And what can I say? DBZ just gets better and better. Perfect Cell has me in awe.

Jedah Dohma
03-28-2006, 11:25 PM
I'm glad you're enjoying everything past the Androids. Isn't Perfect Cell great? :anime:

This is what has been missing for nearly five years on CN. The greatness of the Cell Games. I'd sure like to relive those moments one more time on TV. But I can only dream.
