Wow... I really, truley and honestly counted Nintendo out after the GameCube. I figured they were done.
That the DS would be embarassing crap and the Revolution to flop.
But the DS....... wow... okay, I can see the DS Lite making a kiling but it's original hardware comes in for a double punch in the same week!
Here are the latest Japanese console hardware sales for the week of Feb 27 - Mar 5, 2006:
DS Lite - 68,438 [68,438] units
Nintendo DS - 49,118 [500,482] units
PSP - 43,110 [412,535] units
PlayStation 2 - 25,778 [291,155] units
GBA SP - 5,493 [68,347] units
GB Micro - 3,213 [41,316] units
GameCube - 1,489 [35,716] units
Xbox 360 - 1,240 [26,415] units
Xbox - 101 [895] units
GBA - 98 [1,793] unitsI mean, one of these kickin' but by a significant margin is already pretty cool. But both are knockin' it out of the motherlovin' park!
Go, Nintendo! :anime:

In Japan, yeah. I don't think XBOX ever sold amazingly well over there...
I want a DS Lite man. I really really really want one. They better announce it stateside here pretty soon...

The DS Lite is guaranteed to come out to USA (Nintendo of America's been dragging it around to the media; IGN had it), current rumor is that it'd be launched simultaneously with New Super Mario Bros....
BUT...
Reggie has pretty much stated they need to make sure that Japan gets 'em first. Given that people have been lining up for them in Japan like people lined up for the XBox 360 in America...
I am really freakin' surprised that the OG DS still is purchased when the DS Lite is on sale (but not available).

So the top three systems that sold during this period are handhelds
certainly interesting, it's great to see that both companies handhelds are doing well, it shows a healthy growth in competition
Allthough I think Microsoft should Allocate all those Japan 360's to America...where they would atleast be used and would fill all orders on the still ongoing launch reserve lists....

Are those numbers in brackets for the month or the entire year so far? They seem a little small for two months...

Maybe they use the unsold 360's as doorstops! :lol:
I bet the suits at Microsoft are wondering exactly why they released it in Japan. I sure am.
The Xbox failed in Japan because while Japanese games generally translate well to American audiences, the same cannot be said vice-versa. The key point- Japanese gamers HATE FPS.
As for Nintendo, well, if they were a handheld only company and left the consoles to the other guys, (with the exception of software), I'd be happy as a clam. Handhelds are what Nintendo does best. Now let's see how that success translates here.

It's obvious why the Japanese don't like Mircosoft's consoles...
There's not enough anime games on it. Plain and simple. Anime games are to japan what Football games are over here. You need plenty of them to survive in Japan. It's why the Mega Drive flopped there whereas the SNES was huge. It's also why the N64 ended up last place in the 32bit era, even getting beaten by the Saturn thanks to...anime games.

It's funny how Nintendo fanboys go around parading these stats. I've seen websites post them often. However, I'd make a guess that the US is the most important market and I have yet to see sales figures for that area. I expect we'd see some different stats for sure. And definitely Europe too, since Nintendo of Europe SUCKS. There are no Gamecube games on sale in GAME stores anymore.. At least not the two I go to.
The UK is just full of "graphics whores" who wouldn't know a good game if they got banged by a magic 8-ball.

Honestly, I'd say that the entire market for Nintendo (where they focus, how much are sold) would be 45% Americas, 40% Japan, 10% China, and 5% other countries.
Nintendo likes the foothold they have in China.

45% America would be a tad optimistic. Not sure if this is right, but I read somewhere that Sony had 75% of the gaming market, but I can't recall what area that was.
40% for Japan seems reasonable.. Maybe even higher.. Anyone have links to where information like this is kept?

I'm not saying "with other competitors", I'm saying...
Nintendo has 100% of focus.
45% goes to the Americas, 40% Japan, 10% China, and 5% for other countries.
Thusly, that's where Nintendo's 100% of focus goes.

February NPD Hardware Sales
Xbox 360 = 161,000
PS2 = 299,000
Xbox = 88,000
GCN = 67,000
DS = 150,000
PSP = 170,000
DS just crossed the 4 million mark in America and PSP is only slightly behind. It's a neck-and-neck race in the US.
DS is about 1 million ahead of PSP in Europe thanks to the huge delay between the launches of the two.

I hardly think JohnCrichton comes across as a Nintendo Fanboy in the opening post of this thread. He comes right out and says that he had counted Nintendo out after the Gamecube and that they surprised him.
For any fanboys that ARE in this thread, let them have their moment. It's not like the Microsoft and Sony fanboys aren't just as obnoxious when THEY come across some stats or figures that show their team doing well.
Fanboy and girls can be annoying on any side of the fence.....with that being said....go Nintendo! :p :evil:

Wow, the PSP outsold the DS in sheer numbers last month
so the 250-300 buck price tag really was a phantom variable, especialy considering the technology.....
this could mean we could get an Even Better GBA2 since the bar has been raise for screensize, graphics, sound and such. I also want to see the price gouging war that seems inevitable....how low can the go.

The PSP has been outselling the DS in America for a while now on a month by month basis, but the DS still has the slight lead thanks to it launching earlier.

I am a bit of a Nintendo fanboy. I'm just happy.. not too long ago I really and truely felt the party was over for Nintendo, but they've been hittin' homerun after homerun lately.
Makes me proud to be a fan once again to see them doing so well. :anime:

The real battle has not begun yet though, so don't jinx it
Revolution vs 360 vs PS3
DS vs PSP vs Possible Mystery Contender
things are just gearing up and everything is being brought up to speed
either way, this generation seems very promising in overall games

I wasn't implying that he was one. I was directing that more towards sites such as DSFanboy.com

Direct competition has become a fallacy in the video game industry, anyway. While the DS and PSP are pretty much neck-and-neck worldwide in terms of unit sales, those numbers alone don't hold much meaning. Both can be considered unique successes in any number of ways. For instance, the DS has been doing phenomenally in terms of software sales (and has become an outright cultural phenomenon in Japan), whereas the PSP's unit sales in relation to its price point are really danged impressive (that's a lot of revenue driving right there, despite the floundering PSP software market).
It is good to see Nintendo on top of things again in at least one arena. Iwata has done really well by them.

Eh, sofar it's just been UMD movies that havn't done all that well, but game-sale wise it's up there. And they seem to have dug themselves out of the Software drought because the release scheduel is pretty stable well into the half year mark.

I suspect the Revolution may surprise people. Just an inkling. You'll have those diehard "I love rated M games and won't lower myself to playing kiddie Nintendo stuff" people, but I think we'll see something in the next few months.

House of The Dead 4 is rumored to be on the Revolution, it's just a rumor at this point, but Sega wants to bring it to a home console
