View Full Version : SWAT Kats jumps from Boomerang........back to CN?

If you haven't heard already, SWAT Kats (which made its long-awaited return to the air on Boomerang after a couple of years in complete limbo) will be surprisingly returning to Cartoon Network starting Monday at 2:30PM, five days a week.

This is quite surprising and disturbing at the same time. It's great for those CN-only viewers who get to watch the fan-favorite after what seems like ages, but I'm puzzled and kind of frustrated that the previously clear lines between Boomerang and Cartoon Network are being blurred so much that it seems like anything programming-wise is fair game between the two, possibly making for even more confusion.

We have a couple of shows simultaneously airing on Boomerang and Cartoon Network, Boomerang starting to gradually air shows from post-1995 (which in many's eyes is the acceptable "dividing line" for classic shows, considering the "new generation" of CN started with the WPT project in circa-1995) and now some shows making the jump BACK to Cartoon Network. All of this doesn't bore well for the ill-fated Boomerang, and perhaps makes it more evident that CN should've NEVER spun off its "backbone" of programming to another, obscure channel.

With that said, hopefully Kats will get a run or two and isn't just there as filler. Who knows what this odd phenomenon is about and whether it means anything............

Are you sure it starts this Monday, Ace? I still see PPG on CN's weekday schedule at 2:30.

As for what the "odd phenomenon" is about, let's just say that SWAT Kats has something in common with a certain K!WB (or should I say, K!CW?) series about a group of mutated Looney Tunes.

SWAT kats was on Boomerang??

I had doubts about the Kats returning to CN again as well when I first heard about it, until I checked my on-screen program guide a day later and forwarded to Monday, finding the following listing in place of the previous listing of PPG:

SWAT Kats:The Radical Squadron
2:00PM-2:30PM

Episode: The Giant Bacteria.

So it's pretty much official.

And yes, SWAT Kats was on Boomerang a couple of months ago, at 4:00PM on weekdays IIRC. I think they ran it through twice and then shuffled or yanked it off the air.

I recall 2 Stupid Dogs being on CN as late as 2002-2003, lastly during the dreaded "graveyard shift" until it was banished off the network and spent a while in limbo. Then sometime in 2005 Boomerang brought it into their fold and apparently it's been successful enough to still air there to this day with multiple runs under its belt already.

What's WPT? Personally, I don't consider that the "dividing line" for classic shows. Classics stopped when Cartoon Cartoons started being mass-produced. (Dexter's Lab, PPG, Cow and Chicken and others being given their own series.) Apparently twice the cartoons just ends up equaling suck.

At this rate, it sounds like you're suggesting that Boomerang is going to fall apart within the next few years and so all the popular classics are migrating back to the parent channel, CN. Honestly....who would care? Despite CN's [lack of] effort, the Cartoon Cartoons just aren't filling up the channel like they should. At least, not without massive reruns to the point of nausea for most fans. As well....how many people GET Boomerang? What fraction of people who have CN get Boomerang? So it seems like the only real way to fix that is to either:

A.) Bring back the Cartoon Cartoons that were around for years before, something CN seems reluctant to do for some reason. (Like I care. With the exception of WAC! Show and Foster's, they suck to me.)

B.) Merge Boomerang with CN, and bring back all the old classics to CN, thus giving the channel variety again.

As a side-idea, I would suggest giving AS its own channel (not Boomerang though, unless CN was as aggressive getting IT to people's TVs as they were their own channel back in the early 90's) since it basically takes up half the day and is counted on the ratings as a totally different channel anyway. With this year's coming seasons of shows, it would give the channel just a bit more variety than CN had in 2005. Not exactly a bad thing, but it could work if they acquired just a few more anime. This would give CN more space to air classics on CN in the daytime, then go back to a sort-of Toonami Midnight Run of the old days, where they basically aired every popular show they had from the beginning till that year. (Lasted almost as long as Adult Swim does now.)

Hum. This is all just a pipe dream, though. Right now...the only thing SWAT Kats airing on CN again means....is that SWAT Kats is airing on CN again. Even though Pup Named and Tom and Jerry Kids are ALSO back....

With any luck they'll cut an hour of the CC Marathon they have every day after Miguzi and air Pirates of Dark Water and some other 90's classic.

What's WPT?

World Premiere Toons, which is what almost all the cartoons in the WAC show came from.

I say that this is good news!

WPT= World Premiere Toons/What A Cartoon!/Cartoon Cartoons.

At this point IMO:

a) The same process that occured with CN at the turn of the century when Boomerang first premiered will occur on Boomerang itself albeit completely, meaning all of the classics will either:

- remain in limbo indefinitely or until who knows when.

- be available in home video only.

b) Boomerang will become that much-lauded "preschool network", period.

c) Boomerang will be shut down.

Eh....................sometimes I wonder why I'm repeating what's been often talked about here. Criticism of Boomerang and whanot.

Boomerang deserves criticism. Its almost a textbook defintion of "GREAT idea....really REALLY bad execution".

For the record...none of your options are any good, though they do seem to be the most plausible.

Still, I'm having a hard time believing that all those classics will just be shuffled to DVD when there's a perfectly good channel short of programming that's available.

We'll (supposedly) have a multitude of online "channels," and I'm sure someone will want to acquire that stuff.

c) Boomerang will be shut down.If Turner hasn't done it already, what makes you think they will in the future?

Someone needs to tell CN.com to update their schedule. They've still got PPG on at 2:30 p.m.

The Super Globetrotters are comming back to CN? When is it supposed to air?

I hope CN keeps this up with bringing the old shows back. Maybe they're finally getting the message that the direction they were going in wasn't the right one.

I'm surprised by how 'violent' some scenes are, you really can get away with more if they are not 'human'. The show is also pretty dark (as dark as you can get with humanoid-cats that is). I loved this show as a kid, it really deserved more episodes. An updated version to this show could be so good if done right, though since this is post 9/11, they might not like so many plane 'crashes' specially to buildings ;(. Glad to see it back on CN, now get us some DVDs!

Well they did put it at the midnight spot which pretty much is the same effect as removing I guess, but its still here on CN India :D

I gots me a TV tuner, so I am going to record them, compress them, and save them. I remember this show when it first came out. I don't think they are going to show it for too long, maybe twice. Right now its just filler. I doubt CN thinks for a minute there is enough demand for DVDs. Who know they might release the episodes in the future through some sort of DL mechanism.

Edit: Clarified my point.

Words read, but not deciphered thoroughly.I doubt CN thinks for a minute there is enough demand for DVDs.Cartoon Network isn't responsible for that. If anything, this show would be most likely to show up on the Hanna-Barbera Golden Collection within a year or two or three.

But, if I were in your position, I'd be doing the same exact thing (recording)... for all of the classic shows showing up on Cartoon Network nowadays.

Question: Did SWAT Kats really debut on syndication or was it exclusive to TBS? Of course CN snatched it up shortly after the show was wrapped up because they were desperate for fresh programming.
