View Full Version : Who am I? What am I doing here?

Hey guys!

I'm back again after an extended absence. Allow me to 'splain... no, there is too much. Let me sum up.

I travelled from the end of March until the first week of May as a "roadie" with Acappella ("Christian contemporary music's premier vocal group"). It was hard work (because I was so out of shape), but I had a blast and would do it again in a heartbeat. The states we hit on the tour: Nebraska, Montana, N. and S. Dakota, Washington, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado (I might have missed one, but I think that's all of 'em.) I only got online 3 times in all that time, which is why none of you heard from me in all that time.

I got to sing every night to open each concert as part of a group called "Kenosis" (which consisted of the other 2 roadies and the sound engineer/bus driver). (I alternated on baritone and lead, for anyone who cares.)

The group and company president have since asked me to be the group's road manager when they resume in the fall, which both flattered and honored me. I'm not sure yet if I'll take the job, and I have until early August to give them a decision. But there's a pretty good chance I might just take it.

After I got back in May, I arrived home only to discover that my computer wasn't working properly. My brother says "static shock" (no, I'm not making this up) was to blame. But at least it's working now, and I had a high-speed cable modem installed Wednesday and I'm already spoiled. I've now sorted through the 400 backlogged e-mail messages and I should be back on a semi-regular basis very shortly.

I'm completely out of touch with what's going on with WB right now, so it may be a while before I have some news to contribute. (I also have unfortunately lost my WB contact info - a major setback. It's going to take me a while to reestablish contact with the inside sources I made early this year.

I still don't have cable, though I did get to watch a few KWB shows while I was on tour, and I caught the Oblongs once.

I'm still planning to attend the San Diego Comic-con Int'l next month - I just got some news from Mark Evanier on what voice actor guests will be there.

And speaking of the con, I finally got my pics developed from last year and will be scanning them shortly. I've got several of Static Shock's actors Phil LaMarr and Jason Marsden, Mark Hamill (Joker), Rob Paulsen (Pinky, Yakko), Maurice LaMarche (The Brain), Gregg Berger (Agent K, MIB: The Series), Bill Farmer (Goofy), Paul Dini (Batman writer/producer), and Lucille Bliss (Crusader Rabbit, Smurfette).

Some of them I'll be uploading here, but if you want to see the rest of 'em, you'll hafta be a subscriber to the "Voice Actor Appreciation" group I host.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/voice_actor_appreciation

Sorry, this isn't a lame attempt to get a few new subscribers. I just don't want to burden the TZ server with them.

...okay, I confess. It is a lame attempt to get a few new subscribers.

Also, I'm newly an uncle again. My younger bro, Jon, and his wife Amanda are the proud parents of a brand new 7.9 lb baby girl, Destiney Elaine Crumpton, as of 10:50pm Wednesday.

Anyway, it's good to be back again, and I've missed all my online friends here. And I hope to return to contributing on a regular basis very soon.

Welcome back, Gookie!

You haven't missed too much on the WB front; the latest MIB eps on Saturday mornings are about the only new (non-Pokemon) stuff being shown. Nickelodeon has been boucing P&tB between late-afternoon and *very* early morning time slots. And a number of us Board regulars are learning to appreciate the Powerpuff Girls (at least they're still in production!)

Very glad to see you back! Happy to see you posting to the yahoo group also. It sounds like your adventure went well.
Anyone here who's not already signed up for the Voice Actor Appreciation group should go do so. It's great.

Gookie! I had been wondering how things had been treating you. Glad to hear that you had a blast! And, if nothing else, I'd certainly be flattered that the group asked you to be a road manager, even if you don't take it.

As to KWB stuff you missed... have you seen the new show lineup? Ech. They've stooped to taking long-cancelled shows from Fox (Sherlock Holmes in the 24th Century) and CBS (Rescue Heroes). Oh, and KWB and Cartoon Network are doing a wacky cartoon swapping thing. Cardcaptors is on CN right now, and things like the upcoming Samauri Jack will run briefly on KWB. But at least KWB will be able to run the Justice League series... the show's looking great! Take the time to look up the voice cast list on DG's news page, you shan't regret it. Lex and the Joker will return... with Clancey Brown and Mark Hamill returning, no less. Life is good.

Oh, and Weird Al got married. You leave for a few months, and everything changes...

Heya Gookie!

Welcome back!!! It's soooooooooo good to see yer face around here again. We've definitely missed ya!!

It's great to hear that you had a good time on your trip and that you got to see lots of places =) Think long and hard about the decision to accompany them again in the fall, I'd hate to see ya make a decision that you'd regret.

...anyway, it's great to see ya back again!!

I ask that question to myself many times. ;)

Anyway, welcome back!

What did you think when you saw the new BB? Like going into a parallel dimension?

Or, was it more like this old coffee commercial from long ago:
We've secretly replaced the usual bulletin board that Gookie uses with Foldger's Crystals. Do you think he will notice the difference?

Craig Marinaro

Great to have you back! The place hasn't been the same lately...

Of course, that's mostly because we switched over to this strange, foreign style of Board, with ugly little smilies and signatures and 'PHP'.

Hooray for PHP, whatever the heck it is!!!

But the nonsameness was also partially influenced by your absence. Your being here is like an extra bonus ray of sunshine on an already lovely day!

But all seriousness aside, wonderful to see you again, and hear that you seized the opportunity and had a blast. Here's hoping it's the first of many more blasts to come!

It's supposed to be embarrassment...but to me he looks like he fell asleep while sunbathing, has yet to wake up, and doesn't realize how badly burned he got! A couple of blushing smilies that much better convey embarassment--http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/shocked/blush.gif http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/love/icon_smile_blush.gif.

Dr, you apparently have access to emoticons expressing the entire spectrum of human feeling. Plus a few which I suspect of having extra-terrestrial applications.

Challenge: do you have any representing the Celebration of Chocolate?

DR. BELCH

There are any number of lip-licking smilies...http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/tongue/yum.gifhttp://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/tongue/lickout.gifhttp://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/tongue/flylicker.gif... which could be seen as someone who just ate a bag of bridge mix or a nice pudding...and if you use your imagination a bit, this looks sort of like a chocolate bar:http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/other/pacscat.gif
Now here's a poor slob who overindulged: http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/puke/barfy.gif

I've heard that consuming a certain amount of chocolate is physically equivalent to a period of carnal arousal...well, forget The Exorcist, I'll just take that two-pound box of candy in the window. Better yet, two of them, and a pack of cigarettes... http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/funny/browsmiley.gif http://cwm.ragesofsanity.com/otn/funny/gorgeous

Sharklady

Those first two lip-licking emoticons would be usable for my purposes; the others are too subject to other interpretation. Not my style, y'know.

It's possible the chocolate manufacturers may have come up with something; I'll have to give their websites a perusal.

Better if you use your imagination a lot...which I haven't for over three years. QUIT IT!!

Well, fight fire with fire, I say...though on you, my dear Dr, it will probably have no effect. http://www.smilies.org/basesmilies/smiley-explode.gif

Congrats on the road trip and the job!! (You were in Colorado, and I didn't know...ARGHHHHH!!!!).

Actually, I only passed through Colorado - the group did some tour dates there in the state prior to my joining them first part of 2000. But we just went through it once or twice when I was with them. I don't think we stopped except to refuel.

Might be coming through that way in 2002 though. I'll stay in touch to let you know if I do. I will be with the group again starting in August - the company prez e-mailed me 2 days ago and said he wanted to get the paperwork started.

Also, congrats to your brother--I can't believe he got married, and now has a kid!!! So much can change in a year...

Well, as soon as Harl gets me the new password for TZ's FTP files, I'll have a pic of my new neice to share. She is pretty cute.

I'll be sure to pass your congrats onto him.

Anyway, have fun in San Diego! It sounds like an absolute blast...

It was last year, even if I had to make the trip by myself and sleep in a rental car for 3 days. Hopefully, I can hook up with someone this year to split costs with because I'd really like to sleep in a bed in an actual hotel room this time.

Very true. Gookie isn't the only one with cause to celebrate; my brother also got married and had a daughter. http://ukobservers.net/cwm/otn/other/11baby.gif She's five months old now...and just last week at a Chinese restaurant Saliah tried her first piece of cheesecake. I don't think she liked it, though--she mashed it all over the tabletop with her hand and opted to test her budding teeth on an almond cookie instead. (Lo siento, Sharklady! ;) ) If Gookie starts throwing around pics of his niece, I'll counter with a few of mine...http://www.ihs4ever.com/~cwm/otn/funny/browsmiley.gif

Congrats to your brother.

Welcome back....

While you were gone, KWB continues its status of mediocrity (new, series-ending, two-part MiB episode featuring some alien attack on Earth led by Alpha airs starting tomorrow)..."Shrek" makes it big at the movies... I got a new (used) computer (a Power Mac 7500; I'm still waiting for the new 56k modem I ordered to arrive via UPS)...a new fan fiction story started up ("Spaced Out Warners"....gangsters, space travel, aliens, and (as of the part I just wrote/posted this morning) *new* cliched Final Confrontation™ villain tactics)... and well, for me that's about it.

"Learning" to appreciate the Powerpuff Girls? Like it's something you must be trained or study to do? Say it ain't so!

I immediately liked the PPG - even back before they got their own series and just had 2 shorts on the "What A Cartoon Show". Even in those quaint old days when the backgrounds looked like cardboard with crayon scribblings on them and Jim Cummings did the voice of the Mayor.

I hate that I've missed everything past the middle of the 2nd season because I lost cable.

But at least I have all 3 DVDs.

By "learning", I meant it's something you tend to pick up with repeated viewings. At first glance, the PPGs can just look like weird big-eyed things. It's over time that one comes to appreciate the distinct characterizations, the well-above-average voice work*, and the clever usage of the limited animation.

At least that's how it happened for me.

* Particularly Roger Jackson's contributions. I wasn't surprised when I saw that little 'behind the scenes' promo, wherein several of the PPG creators declared Mojo Jojo to be their favorite character.

I still haven't got the chance to "learn to like" the PPG's seeing as I don't have cable...and have only seen one videotape's worth of episodes (which I rented) :-) Though like I said before, I liked the monkey (Mojo Jojo)...

Hey, Craig.

I'm looking forward to September, that should be fun.
Also, if you wouldn't mind posting or emailing me the dates you'll be in South Dakota, I'd appreciate it. Maybe something could work out there, too.

BTW, if your interested, Mike Milo (a WB director who's done a great deal of stuff for Cartoon Network too - Ignoramooses, ect) has done a pilot at WB called Swaroop that's going to air July 27th on Cartoon Network at 8 (et). I thought you might be interested, after all - it is WB's first comedy type show is quite some time. I don't know what voice actors are involved, but I'll email Mike today and find out.

Everybody - please watch it!
