I found that the cartoon will be part of a Planet of the Apes set which will feature all the POTA films ever made, the TV series, and the cartoon. But it'll cost you an arm and leg for them, but for those who want it, go to TV Shows On DVD (http://www.tvshowsondvd.com) to find out more about it.

Fear not, cbrubaker! David Lambert at tvshowsondvd.com just posted a follow-up suggesting that the animated series would be released separately, for those of us on a budget. :D

Cool.

Just wondering, how was "Return to the Planet of the Apes"? I'm not crazy about action cartoons, but I hear it had some funny pop culture reference, like one episode in where one of the Apes mentioned "The Apefather" (coincidently, DFE had a short lived theatrical series at the same time called "The Dogfather")

you can always join netflix - that's how I'll be checking out the cartoons to see if they're worth buying.

Return to the Planet of the Apes should've done better than it did, but it was on NBC, for years the home of the Pink Panther, but it wasn't promoted as well as it should have.

FWIW, Jonny Quest creator Doug Wildey did the designs for "Return", then returned to Hanna-Barbera a few years later to create Jana of the Jungle.

But even the live action Planet of the Apes series only made it to 14 episodes. And remember that most animated shows don't go on forever - they only made 16 Hong Kong Phooey episodes...and that was a pretty popular cartoon.

I got bad news and good news:

The Bad News is Return to the Planet of the Apes will not be released seperately. They'll be part of the Ultimate DVD collection on March 28.

The Good News is they are working on a DVD box set for the cartoon. We just might have to wait a little longer. They just need to remaster the toons to do that.

So...they decided to lock it in as part of the POTA - The Ultimate DVD Collection after all, eh? :)

You'd think they'd make up their minds...

the whole thing makes no sense - as if they just couldn't put it out as a 2 DVD set on the same day. I wouldn't mind picking up the complete Planet of the Apes collection except for 2 things - what am I going to do with a giant ape head? I don't have that much space on the shelves for jumbo ape heads. And I don't want Tim Burton's crummy version - that film was worse than Battle for the Planet of the Apes.

Well, maybe they do need to remaster them. I have 3 of the 13 eps, and the ending's very grainy.
