View Full Version : What classic DC comics cartoon you want to see as box sets?

Any DC show prior to 1992 you would like on DVD.

My picks:

I can't specificly explain why but I chose Filmation's "Batman" series. I only get to see the '68 series on CN. I did like the way The Riddler speaks.:p

If I get to pick any "Superfriends" show, it had to be "Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians". Like the last choice, I only saw it on CN. I actually found it good, but this series also shows Batman's origin for the first time outside of the comics.

My last choice is Ruby-Spears' "Superman", mainly for nostalgic reasons.

While I wouldn't mind seeing all of them at some point or another but I'm voting for the rest of the Superfriends. They started releasing the episodes but with only one full season released on two sets, what happened to the rest of the series? Does anyone know of any news about Superfriends and why nothing has been released since the two sets from the 1978 season?

Still awaiting more Superfriends sets.

I agree that they should finish The Superfriends sets, so I voted for that. They are too much fun! I'm currently rewatching "Volume Two". Don't start something you can't finish Warners!

The 1961 Adventures Of Superboy was a live action pilot by the way. The cartoon version was a segment first on The New Adventures Of Superman (1966-1967), then on The Superman-Aquaman Hour Of Adventure (1967-1968), and finally, on The Batman/Superman Hour (1968-69).

I think a 60's DC Filmation box including all the Superman, Superboy, Batman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, Hawkman, Teen Titans, and Justice League of America cartoons would be animated bliss.

How about a set of the Ruby-Spears Plastic Man cartoons? I have an OOP video from Worldvision but, sadly, Plasticbaby is nowhere to be seen.

Much underrated is the 1981 Shazam! animated series, which was surprisingly faithful to the spirit of the original Fawcett comics. The animators never could decide which way the lightning bolt should appear on The Marvel Family's uniforms, but it did feature great villains like Mr. Mind and Black Adam, and supporting characters like Tawky Tawny and Uncle Dudley. Some of the stories for that show were written by Paul Dini, who would later find fame writing for Batman:TAS.

I voted for the rest of the "Superfriends" series. Wouldn't mind seeing the opening credits with Darkseid's sinister head superimposed over the Hall of Justice again (the last season, I know)... :-)

I want them all as well. Well, except maybe the Plastic Man series.

I've spent several weekends transferring (in chronological order) all of the hodge-podge clips that Boomerang ran last year.

I'm only missing 1 episode of SPT:GG, and only a couple of "WG SuperFriends".

It's not suprising that the SPT:GG episode "The Fear" (where they show Batman's origin) is one of the best ever SF episodes - it was written by Alan Burnett, one of the producers of BTAS.

With BCI bringing every Filmation cartoon from ER's library (except Fat Albert), I would be crazy if Warner doesn't release the DC Filmation toons to DVD.

It would be nice to have at least one for the shorts produced from 1980-83. Some are interesting, others are downright wacky, but since they were only airing in the Batman-Superman show (which only showed one per half hour, and that rotated with 1977 shorts, and that when the whole slot was not filled with a full length 1977 or 78 episode), you never got to see all of them; especially the rare 1983 "lost" season.

The only DC animated series I want besides Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, and rest of Superfriends is Plastic Man. No offense to anyone who likes those 50s and 60s shows, but the other superhero shows are kind of cheesy compared to today's standards.

I voted for the Filmation Batman shows (1968-70 and 1977-81). Everyone wants Super Friends, so I went against the grain.

I voted the rest of the SuperFriends as well. Since they have two series out, they may as well finish the job. ;)

The Hall of Justice wasn't seen in the Super Powers Team opening theme. It starts with Darkseid looking at an image of planet Earth (rotating in the wrong direction BTW) hoping to conquer it when the team busts in, launching an offensive attack against him. Efforts by Luthor, Dessad, and Kalibak to stop them fail as they pour on the attack, forcing them to flee (sans Luthor) Apokolips on a ship as it gets fired on, driving them out of the scene. The theme ends with several team members standing together in various poses united in their continuing battle against evil under the title The Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians.

Yeah, the first Wonder Twins free season, although I'd have loved to see what the redesigned WT would have looked like. I wish this series had a full 13 episodes instead of just 8, or had at least been given another year. The show was finally starting to get away from the campiness.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED episode "Ultimatum" had 'updated' versions of a few of the SuperFriends that were never absorbed into DC Comics continuity abeit with different names...

The Wonder Twins were named Shifter and Spout, Apache Cheif became Long Shadow, and Samurai was renamed Wind Dragon.

The last two seasons of Superfriends definitely (no interest in that awful first season).

Then, all of the Filmation superhero stuff, especially the Captain Marvel cartoon which I haven't seen since it first aired.

I meant redesigned to fit into the new Superpowers Team designs, like how Superman and Wonder Woman now looked more muscular and heroic, and how Batman's design now looked a little darker than the previous seasons. If only they'd have given Robin pants, the show would have been perfect.

Hmph... must be faulty memories then (not having seen said Darkseid-using shows since childhood). Apologies...

Re: Robin with pants: Since he didn't have pants in the 80's comics (pants IIRC were either a mid-90's comic creation or an innovation of the 90's B:TAS), he wouldn't have 'em in any media spinoffs of the day either... :-)

I voted for the 80's Superman cartoon only because ive never seen it and it being released on DVD is probably my best chance to ever see it.

The reason why I chose all of them is that Warner has not only got more Superfriends on the way, but also adding The Batman, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans, and Justice League to the mix. Sooner or later, they will get to the Filmation DC toons.

Near as I can tell, Tim Drake wore the pants before Dick did in the TAS, but I could be wrong. I do know Drake was wearing them in 92, with Robin #1.

As far as this....whichever Superfriends had Cyborg and Darkseid in it--I want to see THAT one on DVD. I hear Darkseid was in two seasons, so put those both out and I'll be happy.

... they must include the only-aired twice "episode 0" featuring villain Candlehead, a master of disguise who could mold his waxy head to resemble anyone (including Plas himself), and who had a ray weapon that froze Plastic Man into a wax statue and later shattered him. Some of you may actually remember this episode as the framing device for ABC's Saturday morning preview special, which also featured a quick animated vignette of Plas' origin. It aired the Friday night before and again on Saturday morning before the premiere of the show.

And let's not forget all of Plas' "Consumer Tip" segments. I'm sure many of us out there have Plas to thank for reminding us to count our change at the counter, shop several stores for a good bargain, and to never send cash through the mail.

And that's two cents from...

The DarkLantern

P.S. I suppose they should also be complete and include the live-action Plas intro segments developed when the show first went into weekday syndication -- though the humor of those was lamer than the worst bits of the show itself.

They have got to do the superfriends as a box set.

On a side note, remember the episode where superman got transported to a world where the superfriends were evil and he made a promise to come back and free that world. I always think that an episode should have been made where the superfriends went back to the alternate universe to make good on Superman's promise. I think that episode would make a killer animated movie in today's market.

The Superfriends have three sets out already (The 3rd was released just yesterday), with the fourth set (Galactic Guardians) coming in October. I'm assuming that 'World's Greatest' will follow, followed by the hour long episodes.

Nice to see that all those fans clamoring for the Superfriends seasons and the Filmation DC stuff are getting their wishes these days. Let's hope it continues.

I personally voted for the Ruby-Spears Superman show since it was excellent, but I'm also hoping they eventually put out the Filmation Batman show of '68.
