I bought Ted Leo's The Tyranny of Distance. I've gone through their work backwards starting with Shake the Sheets which I really enjoyed, Hearts of Oak which I liked even more but wow. Tyranny of Distance just blew me away.

The other albums have a bit more venom in them, a little crunchier--not that these are bad things, the bitter "I'm a Ghost" and "Ballad of the Sin Eaters" are still some of my favorite songs. Everything on this album is just so much smoother. The vocals are sublime.

Worst cover art I've ever owned though, but who cares.

I like Tyranny's cover art...

Tyranny may or may not be my favorite Ted Leo/Rx album. It's actually a toss-up between that and Shake for me. Hearts is excellent, but I always liked it just a tad bit less than the other two.

For some reason, I thought the new Flaming Lips album was coming out this month. I was wrong. Thus, I can't really think of anything coming out this month I'm looking forward to. I'm sure something cool will pop up, though.

However, I will be going to see Of Montreal on the 20th. That should be a good time.

I was thinking of starting "This Year In Music" thread for 2006 (we had something similar last year), but then I realized that a lot of what I'm looking forward to is coming out this month anyway. (Someone else can start that type of thread if they wish.)

P.O.D. start things off with Testify. I personally thought their self-titled album in 2003 was really good. Not as stand-alone good as some of their other albums, but it showed progression. One review I read of Testify said that it sort of goes back on that and is basically like Satellite. I hope that's wrong. I'd hate to see them cave in to the "hardcore" fans who define not "selling out" as remaking their old albums over and over again.

But what I'm far more -- and with less reservations -- looking forward to this month is:

MUTE MATH. The self-titled debut album, on sale exclusively at their tour which begins this month.
I can't express in words how long I've been waiting for this album. It's the biggest release in the history of the Earthsuit family. Earthsuit had their two demo EPs, one sole official album (10 songs), and their independently released farewell CD (5 new songs and 11 bonus tracks). Macrosick has their demo EP. And Mute Math has their 6-song Reset EP, which was released in September 2004 and has left me anxiously waiting for more. Now it's finally arriving, with a whopping 16 new songs. I am so psyched.

Preliminary expectations for the tracklist are as follows in this obviously incomplete list:

Typical
Chaos
Noticed
Knife
You Are Mine
Stare at the Sun
Photograph
Break the Same
Fight
Without It
StalloutI may not actually get to one of these shows until February... but we'll see. It's always somewhat in the realm of possibility that I'll get the album before then somehow...

Their MySpace page, linked below, has some wicked live videos, plus songs including a new studio track.

I thought that the self-titled album really sucked except for a couple songs. Listening to the new EP, it'll sound a lot like Satellite, except with some flat-out reggae added to it. That'll be awesome.

I thought that the self-titled album really sucked except for a couple songs. Yeah, a lot of people did. I'll never really understand why.

I never did like POD, not even their pre-element of southtown
they do have a few catchy songs, i'd happily trade my POD cds for a greatest hits.

(Someone else can start that type of thread if they wish.) you should go ahead and do it, there are plenty of bands new albums that we can discuss.

I recently purchased John Coltrane's A Love Supreme. It is my first jazz album and it has already become a favorite of mine.

Hello 2005 holdover.

Tullycraft's Disenchanted Heart's Unite! is pretty damn awesome.

Damn shame there's no way I'm making this.

As for this month....eh, it's alright I think. Need to take another look at my list. I know Rhymefest's Blue Collar will drop later in the month, so that's something.

Huh, I thought Jin would be there performing as well.

I got First Impressions of Earth the day it came out and it's...okay. "You Only Live Once", "Juicebox", "Razorblade", and "Electricityscape" are all fine songs in their own right, but it's mostly the sound of a band trying to expand without the slightest clue of how to do it. At least, those are my first thoughts.

Then again, it's kind of hard to listen to it with intent when DJ Muggs vs. GZA's Grandmasters keeps stealing all of my attention.

So I saw Aereosmith with Lenny Kravitz in Orlando last Thursday. Yes, it was fantastic. Kravitz's set felt like the main event, and Aerosmith pulled out alot of lesser-known classics. Third time I've seen them, and it's amazing every time.

Minus the Bear has recently been added to my heavy rotation. While their newer album, Menos el Oso, isn't quite as technical as some of their earlier releases, it still just begs to be listened to. Or I just get addicted to bad music. Your call.

Mute Math put up an E-card for their new album, featuring two songs: they continue to make "Chaos" available for download, and now they've got the brand new release of the final mix of "Noticed".
http://www.mutemath.com/tour-ecard/
There's also a Vedera song and some info there... I honestly don't care but I guess I should mention it.

Additionally, a site (decoymusic.com) recently posted a tracklist for the album. There is much debate as to whether or not it's legitimate, since there's no official word on it and since it only has 12 tracks rather than 16 tracks. Some have theorized that there are four instrumentals in addition to the 12 listed songs. It should be noted that band members have spoken of both 12 and 16 tracks, and 16 was the more recent number. So basically, we can all be very certain that there will be either 12 or 16 songs on this album. It's a nice amount in either case, and at least one of the songs is over six minutes in length, and many of the others appear to clock in at around five.

1. Collapse
2. Typical
3. After We Have Left Our Homes
4. Chaos
5. Noticed
6. Without It
7. Polite
8. Stare At The Sun
9. Obsolete
10. Break The Same
11. You Are Mine
12. Picture
13. Stall Out

Track 11 is most likely supposed to be "Photograph" (another reason people are doubting this tracklist -- though the title may have simply changed). Tracks 2, 6, and 8 are previously unheard of.

EDIT: This discussion is all futile -- Darren King posted a blog on MySpace that updates the listing to the final, definitive 13 tracks.

Oh man, tickets for The International Ska Circus go on sale today and I'm really temptedto buy some, even though I don't know how I'd get there or where I'd stay. It goes down March 11th in Las Vegas (during spring break weekend, which is both good and bad) and so far, the confirmed acts are The Skatalites (Woo!), Reel Big Fish (bleh...), The Toasters (woo...), Fishbone (WOO!), Voodoo Glowskulls (meh), La Banda Skalavera (?), Westbound Train (Woo!), Suburban Legends (meh), The Debonaires (Woo!), DJ Chuck Wren (?) and The Aggrolites are rumored to be playing as well. Fishbone and The Skatalites are almost enough to entice me to go, especially because Fishbone rarely ventures outside of California and even though The Skatalites only have a few original members left, it would be cool to see such a legendary band. We'll see what happens...

Not a lot out this month that interests me. I've heard the new Strokes album and didn't really like it, so I'll pass on that, but I might pick up the new stuff coming out from Randy and Some Girls. This month I'll be going to see The Suicide Machines and maybe Cake, mostly because they'll be playing in a new venue in town, so that should be interesting if nothing else.

While unsuccessfully trying to just play one simple music video on Launch.com, I discovered that Switchfoot just released a live-ish music video for "We Are One Tonight", which is by far the worst song on Nothing Is Sound. Oh well.

I'm not sure how recent this is, but fans of Beastie Boys should be aware that BeastieBoys.com (http://www.beastieboys.com) has downloadable acapella MP3s that you can use for remixing. Skimming the list, it seems like they have everything from To the 5 Boroughs and then some others.

Over at Jin's website, http://www.theemcee.com/home.htm (http://forums.toonzone.net/www.theemcee.com) there is a new freestyle song called "Mass Appeal 2006" and they are going to be releasing an album with Jin's freestyles and songs that were on mixtapes.

Oh and here are the Soundscan results from last week:

The Mute Math Album Release Tour is beginning as we speak, which means people (who can get to Oklahoma) are buying the album for the first time. TRAILER (http://assets.mutemath.com/_blog/MMtourpromo.wmv)

I got both Buzzc*cks' (boy, that filter sure is SCREWY) Singles Going Steady and Minutemen's Double Nickels on the Dime and they both rock very, very hard.

Got a call last night to run down to the Sun Dome and meet my friends for WinterJam 2006, featuring New Song, ZoeGirl, Toby Mac, Krystal Meyers, Hawk Nelson, and the Newsboys. I was a little late, though, so I missed ZoeGirl, Meyers, and I think Nelson. Still cool, though. They also had a Sphere of Fear, those cages that they cram bikers into to ride all around. Only 10 bucks, and they put on a heck of a show, especially the Newsboys (who also did a song I recognized).

Ah, and from what I read on Newsboys.com, that was one of their first shows with their replacement guitarist.

Not sure what else I wanted to say, but I thought I'd point it out.

I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record here, but hey, this is a big month for Mute Math. Here's an interesting article from Tuscon Weekly:

http://www.tucsonweekly.com/gbase/Music/Content?oid=oid:77485

The article is all about why they broke from Warner Bros. Records and their battle against Christian marketing. Very interesting stuff, and you gotta respect them for it. Of course, the article also calls them "mature emo" for some reason I'll NEVER understand, and I can only hope that as a result the article will not turn more people away from the band than it wins over.

Oh, they also have a new song up at http://www.purevolume.com/mutemath . It's called "Typical".

Was able to pick up Jeff Buckley's Grace yesterday. Perhaps the "prettiest" album I've heard in quite some time.

I'm really enjoying this album, But Sleep Came Slowly, by Red Stars Theory. Apparently rightfuly so, members involved in Modest Mouse and Built To Spill. I need more music like theirs I think. The majority of my music I notice is compact pop songs.

I suppose I will just go overboard on them and My Morning Jacket and I don't know.

The new Plastic Constellations album, Crusades, is most fine.

As is Of Montreal's live show.

Picked up Lenny Kravitz Greatest Hits. Pretty good stuff, although I wish the song he opened with at the concert was on there (not quite sure if it is or not, but I don't think so).
Anyway, currently hunting down the soundtrack to Velvet Goldmine.

Everyone must watch The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight!! Mute Math makes their TV debut. This will be an epic event. ...even if it gets delayed by #*%)!^*%)#)%! golf. But still! Watch it! You will not be disappointed!!!

As if that wasn't fantastic news enough, their album is now available for the first time ever ONLINE at their store (http://www.zambooie.com/stores/index.tpl?st_id=145). If you can't get to their tour -- or if you're like me and you don't want to wait one or two weeks longer -- this is for you.

I played "Strength of My Life" on the radio tonight and I really liked it. Probably the first song I've heard from their new stuff (aside from the B-side "Why Wait") that really shows promise. I know I'll have to get around to it eventually. I've kind of reached a spending limit last month/this month, though.

I got Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" the other day. It's magnificent. I'm still not sure if I like it better than Summer Teeth, but they're both so absolutely fantastic, it doesn't really matter. Ol' Wilco's also playing in my state next month, which is kind of rare, considering I live in Mississippi. I'm psyched.

(Pssst, it's February. Whoever usually makes these threads should make a February one. Unless they already have and I didn't notice. Then I'm a fool.

"Strength Of My Life" is really awesome, but it's not the best song on the album. I'm too busy rocking out to "Roots In Stereo".

Speaking of that, I got Matisyahu's "Live At Stubbs", which is almost too good.

So it's February, but whatever, the January thread is still good...

First off, I've gotta bring down the hype surrounding Matisyahu a little bit. I'm not trying to single you out or anything Beau, as he's gotten a lot of attention recently even though his live album has been out for almost a year, but the dude isn't good enough to be garnering as much attention as he has been getting. Yeah, he's a Hasidic Jew who does vaguely dancehall-ish reggae and I understand that that's some of the appeal, but once you get past that, a lot of his songs are really dull and he doesn't have the same kind of delivery as some of the better dancehall deejays. I'll admit that some of his songs are pretty damn good, I particularly like "King Without a Crown" and "Exaltation", but I dunno, I just don't get what all the hype is about. If you want good non-Jamaican dancehall artists, try Dr. Ring-Ding or King Django, who happened to release a klezmer-reggae album called "Roots and Culture" which blows Matisyahu out of the water in my opinion.

Yep... going to see Westbound Train with the Toasters and Satori this month... should be a good show.

But other modern reggae artists talk about sex and weed, which isn't really my thing. Matis is an excellent alternative who delivers scripture-based lyrics all the time. That's why I like him; I don't know about anyone else.

Oh, and Matisyahu dancehall? No. Sean Paul is dancehall. Matis' music is reminiscent of Bob Marley's roots reggae.

If you like scripture based stuff, definitely check out King Django's Roots & Culture. (http://www.stubbornrecords.com/shop/customer/product.php?productid=23783&cat=&page=1) It's a bit more varied than Matisyahu's stuff, as it has some reggae, some ska, some dub and some Jewish folk music in both Yiddish and English. It's pretty cool.

And I said Matisyahu was dancehall-ish, not straight up dancehall. He reminds me of Buju Banton, not that means anything to most people, but he has a primarily roots based style but occassionally throws in some speedier verses and delivers stuff in a dancehall influenced manner. Plus, most modern dancehall relies on synthesizers and drum machines and whatnot, and Matisyahu uses a live band (and a damn good one at that), so my dancehall comparison wasn't entirely accurate.
