I heard the musical was pretty good. I'm reading it for school. The book is awesome, boy is Melena a weirdo jerk.

Not a fan of the musical (or for that matter the book), maybe because I'm not a fan of the Oz books. Or maybe it's because of a raging between fans of Wicked and Avenue Q.

However I will NOT get into that right now.

I'm really not into books like "Wicked" since they put a "New Spin on an Old Tale." I just find that too gimicky and unorginal.

I've talked to several friends who enjoyed the books, so it may be preety entertaining and good.

I normally agree that these books/movies/shows are usually gimmicky and unoriginal, but Wicked and Gregory Maguire's other work, nicely escapes that definition. He uses the stories as basework for a whole new, different, meaningful thing, not just "so you think you know that story? well then, watch out, because I'm going to tell you the REAL story, pretty much the same except with a few new details to make it seem hip and edgy!"

The musical, however, is a disasterously over-rated steaming pile of cliches; the ending could be the worst, most cop-out, schmaltzy ending to anything in entertainment form ever.

I'm not sure they could get away with anything else for an ending. Wicked is a franchise-kind of musical and, aside from the original silver slippers, really was made for people familiar with the MGM movie only.

But its effects are creeping into licensing... http://www.tonnerdoll.com/2005WebReady/2005FH/OZ/Z212a.jpg Yes, that's the Witch

This is definitely a manufactured, money-making machine. It's owned by Universal, for God's sake. It's also just WAY too Disneyfied. I'm not one of those annoying people who thinks that an adaptation needs to blindly follow its source material, but this just spits on Gregory Maguire's books.

Universal's original plan was a movie version of the book, with Demi Moore.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone at Universal's trying to make it a movie musical now. "It's like Chicago meets Narnia in the Hogwarts drama club!"

I've never seen Wicked, but I love the soundtrack. It's got some great songs. And Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are amazing singers. I've started reading the book, too. I understand that it's very different from the musical but I think it's still cool.
