Most video game movies have been pretty bad, but which game would actually make a good movie? My vote goes for Earthbound. Its got a lot of characters, plenty of plot elements, and a hero who whacks guys with baseball bats! Plus, the game is long forgotten except for hardcore gamers, so it would be judged on its own merits and not on how much it resembles the game.

But I don't think most great games would make good movies because of all the plot and character developement that would have to be cut out to fit the timelimits on a single movie.

I think if done right, The Legend of Zelda could make a good movie, or even be done as a trilogy.

Castlevania - which is a shame since it won't be.

The 1st Resident Evil. The Gamecube version was just so well written that a movie would be easy to make.

The Legend of Zelda. It's like the Lord of the Rings of the video-game world.

I'd say that given the high graphics ability of modern video games, you'd have to go back to the SNES/early PSX days and beyond. If there was a movie made off FFX, how impressive would it be compared to the game itself? Not much of an upgrade. Tomb Raider has been a success financially, but it was an independent story rather than a straight adaptation of the original game. In order to do a straight adaptation of the game without complaints from hardcore gamers, they have to do an old game where anything is an improvement and there is a good plotline. I don't think the games from any of this generation's consoles can be made into a movie because they are so visually stunning by themselves.

Golden Sun would be pretty neat. Kinda has a LoTR feel to it. Plus I think the fights would look awesome, with summons and psynergy and whatnot.

Seconding MGS and Zelda. Zelda could easily implement a fetch quest with radically different dungeons into a single movie. And MGS, minus some people could be a completely juice-rocking movie.

MGS is the only game I can think of off the top of my head that's guaranteed to have a good adaptation, assuming Kojima is involved.
Katamari DamacyBrilliant! I'd pay to see that! :D

Any video game movie done right. Devil May Cry and Onimusha would be hard to mess up. Legacy of Kain could be done, but really would work out better as a series.

Any game with a legitimately good story. As in, not just good enough to serve the gameplay (and there's nothing wrong with that, by the way, if it makes for good gaming). So far, those geniuses haven't tried it yet. Mario? Street Fighter? Mortal Kombat? Resident Evil? Doom? Bloodrayne? Sure, there was Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, but of course that doesn't really count because it had nothing to do with the games.

Metroid - Could be a great live action sci-fi flick if done right.
Legend of Zelda - Lord of the Rings esque production values could help make a Zelda movie great.
Castlevania - Another great series to make a movie out of, too bad the one we will be getting will suck.
Metal Gear Solid - This game screams movie.
Ratchet and Clank - Would make for a great series of animated films.
Jak series - Again would make for a great series of animated films.

Metal Gear Solid has all the potential to be a good video game movie. But knowing Hollywood, they'll probably throw Kojima off the project and make their own "better" version.
They should make another Super Mario Bros live-action movie..
How will it work though?

Katamari Damacy could only work as edutainment on PBS if it ever got syndicated. I think people will be more confused than entertained by the movie aspect of it.

How will it work though? Maybe they could ask Bob Hoskins (even though he's in his 60s) and the guy who played Luigi (forgot his name) if they'd like to do it 13 years later..

And what will the movie be about? Saving the princess by going through the mushroom kingdom?

Zelda could be good. If only Link had some sort of a personality besides having courage we know nothing.

Sonic the Hedgehog would make a great live-action movie!
BLASPHEMY!!! Sonic should only be animated not any live action crap.
As for video games that would make cool movies
Xenosaga- since the game cinemas last 3+ hours and there are 3 games you have a franchise right there.
Disgaea- live action devil peguins
Shenmue- "I see" :D
