More like Kwanzaa! Huh? Huh?

Oh man, that’s pretty crappy.

Edit: Kwanzaa spelled with two "A's" now. The extra "A" is for Awesomesupercool. Hell yeah.

That's okay, I don't celebrate fake holidays.

I mean...I'll fix that immediately.

Only Tienshin could get away with that one...

And Thom Dubois. Because he said the Kwanzaa candles were a low budget Hannukah.

I'm looking forward to this, mainly because the scene with Ruckus as Santa reminds me of the sketch on SNL where Chris Farley was Matt Foley as Santa in a mall

When on break at work, I usually spend the time looking at the newspaper comic, paying special attentions to Boondocks recently. I was espically wary in reading this week's comics. Why? Because they got in actual mention in the episode itself. Riley's comments on asking for Rim's for Christmas and Jazzmine praising Santa like Jesus (espically the rising and delivering presents lines) are straight from the comics themselves. I don't think that's something any other Newspaper comic to tv show translation has done.

This was also wrapped in a very awesome episode. Every part clicked very well, from Riley being angry and trying to shoot the mall santa (with pellets no less) to Huey directing his version of the Christmas play ("Do I look like Charlie Brwon to you?" Actually that was one of the few Peanuts Christmas refrences. Another was the style of writing on Riley's note to Santa) which ended up being a critical success even if it wasn't watched by many people. (Just like a really good show I know). One of the definite best AS christmas specials, up there with "Mail Order Bride" and "A Very Venture Chrsitmas".

This episode wasn't too good, though it did pick up towards the end. Was that Shin (Am I getting his name right?) as the DJ? The animation seemed better, I don't know if it's because I'm looking at it through my monitor or what.

It's a Christmas miracle! The Boondocks had the first episode I've really enjoyed.

No Social Commentary is what made this episode so great. Just a straightforward character story. Which is what I wanted the whole time.

The constant Peanuts references had to be the funniest part. And Ruckus' "Nooooo" was timed perfectly.

The only complaint is the whole annoying "Riley wants to kill Santa" subplot. It wasn't funny to begin with and got even less funny as it continued.

But minor complaint aside, This was great. Lets hope Boondocks has more episodes like this one and less social commentary crap. :)

4/5.

That was great. Even though it came off as a little...unrequited, Riley's beef with Santa was fun. But I got it. Huey was most definitely playing himself full force through this, damn somebody give that kid a De La Soul album.

Best episode so far.

Jazmine's VA was *excellent*. For the first time she sounded really young and cute, instead of whiny and annoying.

Riley's "revenge" against Santa was so amazingly random, yet very much in character, and very entertaining.

I felt the racist principle banning "black" jesus was a bit forced. It just seemed to come out of nowhere, like the writers said, "Oh yeah, that's right, we need a set-back, what can we do? Oh, I've got it!"

Still, an entertaining show. Not a lot of bust a gut, laugh out loud moments, but well paced and fun nonetheless.

I own "The Right to be Hostile" and read the comic strip daily, so yes, I have read the strip. And the strip was about the characters and stories, then it turned to complete social commentary after 9/11, and now they just seem to switch back and forth between the 2.

Jazmin preaching like she has in the comic this week is still gold.

A fun episode all around. Even Ruckus wasn't annoying as hell.

Not sure where I stand on this episode just yet. I had some laugh moments, but I might put this behind "Garden Party" (which is my least favorite episode) at this point. I'll play with this again on Sunday.

This is what Christmas is all about. Attacking Santa because he didn't give you the gifts you wanted, a play with black Jesus with the support of Quincy Jones, and Uncle Ruckus plays the perfect Santa Clause. :) A good Christmas episode for a good show. :)

4/5. There was quite a bit of social commentary. I guess you could argue that it's just Huey's views, but it was pretty obvious that they wanted to get across the true origin of Christmas and all that.

But it was done in a less obnoxious way than the comics have been guilty of in the past. And overall it was a good episode. Most of the comedy was pretty dull stuff. The Santa-worship bordered on funny but fell short because it was pretty predictable. Riley's letter to Santa was really quite funny, though. That's one joke where the use of the N word really is necessary.

True, but they didn't actually show his play which limited the social commentary to a minimum.

And the whole origin was just a lead up to a hilarious Peanuts reference for me.

Not the funniest ep, but I loved the knocking of network notes. Uncle Ruckus ruled, as did Riley busting rubber caps in everyone's ass.

Damn! I was expecting the episode to revolve around the Jolly Jenkins myth that Huey speaks about in the comic strip. If any of you read those strips regarding Jolly Jenkins, they're funny.

Boondocks just seems to get better with each passing week! It seems they outdo themselves with every new episode.

- I'm all for trying to be accepting to all cultures, but Huey's teacher Mr. Uberwitz... man, okay this guy ain't helping. Get him out of here!
- Riley's always being the wild one, isn't here, this time wanting to 'cap' Santa for not giving him his due presents. Loved the reference to the Charlie Brown Christmas special, with Riley's writing appearing above his head.
- Jazmine, ah, so now we really see the little girl everyone's been clamouring about. Dare I say... she looks cute decked in Christmas garb.
- And Huey... always serious about his vision, and about making sure it's shown right. It's not our place to ask if he's right in doing so... or if he's right, period. But you gotta love the guy for making you think the 'what ifs,' eh?

8 out of 10 for "A Huey Freeman Christmas."

:anime: oooh Jazzi was sooo cute!! "he's an imposter! beware the false Santa!"
Riley was nutty...missed the first few minutes so i have no idea what he has againts Santa. Huey...wow. seemed like a bit of a jerk this ep...understandable he had a vision to put on a play, but he did come off as stubborn. more than usual.

Rukus  AHHH never dress as Santa again! i had to put up with spandex Shinji...now a pervi lookin Santa Rukus blargh!

the mood of this ep was...kind of sweet i would say. i liked the background music.

hm...while I admit the series was full of social commentary (from the opening scenes with riley and the mall santa and the historical origin of christmas commentary by huey) problem was it just wasn't funny. It was straightforward, and I did expect some funny moments I am afraid to say. And the peanuts homages in the episode were too frequent, but it was predictable as well, a kid making a christmas play. If that doesn't yell parody peanuts I don't know what will. From a social (and open) standpoint, the episode was a good learning experience, it just wasn't funny
3/5
but as I think about it, how could such an episode get funny? Kinda hard...eh well

I don't think that's something any other Newspaper comic to tv show translation has done. The Garfield Quickies on Garfield and Friends were, more often than not, animated versions of the Sunday comics.

I would argue that the strip is lifting material from the show considerig these episodes were written possibly over a year ago. Which wouldn't surprise me much since from what I have read Aaron is routinely going down to the wire to meet his comic page deadlines.

I think yet again Boondocks almost comes off as more dramatic in terms of emotion, yet the setting got to be absurd after a certain point (the celebrity usage was just a little too Simpsons somehow.) On the other side of it though, I would say this is probably best episode for Jasmine so far, atleast in terms of her VA's performance, and the gag with Riley shooting at Santa and Santa using a little kid as a human shield was pretty funny in a warped way as was the jab at the white school teacher becoming an African-American studies prof (probably one of the most caustic shots to date in the series.) The Peanuts nods were nice too, though they weren't often played for laughes outside of Huey knocking over the turntable and such.

I thought the jab at the professor and the University of Maryland was interesting since Mcgruder graduated with a degree from the University of Maryland in African American studies. I guess he didn't care for the program or a certain professor.

Also, like a lot of people I thought Jazmine's performance was a notch above the last time we saw her, and it was cute how she completely intermingled Santa Claus and Jesus in one entity.

I thought it was funny when Riley becomes the "Santa Stalker" and tries to kill "Santa" when pellet guns. I really loved the part when Riley wrote a letter to "Santa" Charlie Brown style and when "Santa" was cursing & used a little girl a shield. :D I thought it was cute when Jasmine was preaching about Santa.

I'll have to check out this Christmas special. I read the daily strip, and I just HATE how Huey teases Jasmine (Jolly Jenkins, Santa in prison, Chicken Little and Donald Duck having avian flu, etc.)

Does anyone think that Uncle Ruckus will find his way into the strip, or if "Psycho Star Wars Guy" or that girl who's always trying to act "hip" (saying "Whas'sup?" to Huey and annoying him) will be on the TV show?

I loved when Mr. Ubawitz was asking the class who wanted to say Harambee with him and of course everyone turned to Huey. That's true on so many levels, whenever there is a topic about Black people and you're the minority in the class, everyone turns to you.

I agree. I don't think I laughed once. Though, I think I might have laughed at the ad. That seems to be happening more frequently lately. I laugh at the ad for an Adult Swim show, but don't laugh at the actual show. That's weird.

I do agree that Jasmine is pretty cute though.

Yup.

I think its partially because they assume you've "been there" and they haven't (which can be true, though that's not always the case) and also they (being the "other" as the teacher said) are scared to make any statements about A.A. culture that might be wrong.

Still funny as all hell though. I was actually hoping we'd see more of Huey interacting in class/with classmates instead of being his usual anti-social, pretentious self. I think that would have been much more interesting character development, if harder to do.

I think that would have been much more interesting character development, if harder to do.I was kind of hoping to see classroom scenes, as well. When I first heard that a series was in the works, I assumed they were going to begin with an origin story of sorts, and have scenes with Huey and Riley moving in, meeting Jazmine, their first day at J. Edgar Hoover Elementary, etc. I think not going this route has some advantages, but I also think it forfeits a lot of good opportunities.
