Comments from the guy with the Sakyo Avatar:
* Boondocks is really kicking butt in the ratings! Keep it up! BTW, how are American Dad's ratings, y'know, if it NEVER makes the top 3?
* Saturday has really gone downhill hasn't it? Those are some of the saddest ratings I've seen in my life! 12 oz. Mouse does better than all of Saturday? That's really depressing. :( I'm also puzzled why the Boondocks didn't even touch the top 3 that night. I wonder if Boondocks/Stroker is going to even help? Now that I see how bad Saturday's ratings have been, I think that night should just be a premiere encore night and except for the opening hour, Thursday should be considered another premiere night (with some encores.)
* I do like the idea of Anime Premieres over the course of a few nights. This might help thier ratings and hopefully mid-2006 or later they will start acquriing more anime titles to show. AS with no anime would not be good. I also really think they should experiment with an original action title from an American studio.

Loved the parody of "A Day in the Life" by the Beatles in the card before PHF..
Saturday ratings continue to puzzle me. You could basically copy the Sunday lineup and have it be the premiere block and it would still only get about 300K average. Sheesh.
Repeat after me, everyone...
NO ONE WATCHES TV ON SATURDAY NIGHTS.
I think it's official. No new anime in 2006 other than lined up premires of shows they already have (IE- The rest of Champloo, EVA, FMA, and 2nd Gig)
Also the fact that 12 Oz Mouse got better ratings than Evangelion shows how good a job Williams Street did at destroying the credibility of anime in the eyes of the casual viewer and comedy fan.
On a slightly more positive note, I think it's about time Robot Chicken decided to parody DBZ.
Repeat after me, everyone...
NO ONE WATCHES TV ON SATURDAY NIGHTS.But people do watch TV on Saturday nights.
Just nobody in Adult Swim's main demo, apparently.
Shnay
12-19-2005, 04:50 PM
Wouldn't Saturday Night Live have a similar main demo? That seems to have done alright for itself over the years.
Public's perception of late-night comedians >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Public's perception of "dem cartoons from Japan with all the violence".
Shnay
12-19-2005, 04:55 PM
If that's the case, then the problem isn't that no one watches TV on Saturday nights. It's that no one watches the type of TV Adult Swim shows on Saturday nights, which is a very different issue.

How did WS destroy the credibility of anime? By giving it a dedicated night and slots during the week?
Youko Recca
12-19-2005, 05:15 PM
Yeah, you can't really place blame on WS for people not watching. I mean, they could promote better(much), but at the end of it all it's the people not watching--not watching. By now I don't even want to try and guess what causes this single night to have such odd ratings.

If they wanted people to watch they shouldn't have put it on saturday, the 200k-300k is adultswims real hard core audience, basically they are just going to have to suck it up, watch it grow, or get rid of anime on the block. The truth is imho adult swim recycles viewers, I watched family guy and futurama two times through then stopped, then they play 26 episode series like fox plays the simpsons, it is really no wonder the ratings are the way the are. My plan for AS success, 1. make the saturday block 1 hour long only like in the olden days, 2. on week nights play premires, but in a way that doesn't burn through them, like an hour of premires a night, 3. in stead of playing the same 8 shows 6 nights a week, play 16 diffrent shows, most animes would be played once a week only, so that they don't get burned out.

Outside of the fact that I see more scryed commercials combined than Champloo FMA advertisements...;/
It's a shame anime has not done that well during the last half of this year. But then again, it's understandable that it will receive less ad-time than something done by Williams Street. That's where the real money and the support for the Adult Swim block comes from.

Promos help to an extent, but ultimately they are only 15/30/60 seconds bits. Ultimately, a show's best promotion is the show itself. Each timeslot it gets a full half hour to promote itself. ASA Saturday has been running for almost two years now. At this point pretty much anyone who would be interested should know that action airs on Adult Swim Saturday, whether they promote it a little or a lot.

The ratings for 18-34s on Saturdays are strongly influenced by local events going on in the towns and cities where the Neilsen households are located -- hot party, new local bar band, concert, weather etc. The 18-34s are the most likely to go out to the hot local scene on Saturdays. Younger and older demos aren't as strongly driven to go out and get drunk, get laid, party hearty, hit the hot spots on Saturdays.
By the way, the business press is carrying stories that Neilsen Media Research may be put up for sale by its corporate parent, the Dutch global conglomerate known as VNU. One of the parties rumored to be interested is called the WPP Group, a conglomerate whose holdings include 3 of the largest U.S. ad agencies. What supports this rumor is that WPP and Nelsen have a joint overseas venture that provides audience measurements in 30 foreign countries.
Such a purchase, I think, would destroy Neilsen's credibility in the USA and render it worthless. Its main value is that producers, networks and advertisers all trust Neilsen as a neutral party that provides audience numbers. Take away that perception of neutrality and Neilsen is a goner. (^_*)

Damn. I look at Alvin and the Chipmunks, and want to cry and wipe my tears with the kleenex, corner by corner. I have no idea why, just looking at their faces and...man. Why do I feel so bad for them? Something about them just makes me want to buy one of their nonexistent albums to help their sales, and help them maintain a good home with that queer they have for a guardian. My heart aches for them, and I don't know why. Poor things.
ok yeah i too would like to hear more anime aquistions for 2006 but what about that subtilled anime?
I don't know, didn't AS say something about experimenting with one title next year? We talked about this not too long ago, and I wouldn't put it past them. Yeah, some said Beck, but others find that ludicrous.

I think it's a good idea to spread the anime out. An entire block of anime definitely has potential marketing problems in America. Maybe this'll make the shows stand out more. There'll be less of a "THIS IS ANIME" barrier.

Well that "entire block of anime" thing doesn't really hurt Toonami.
But Adult Swim has to realize that 18-34 mainstream viewers aren't all that interested in Japanese action / drama cartoons. That demo is more around 9-17 or to be generous... 9-24. Spreading it out might help though.

Younger viewers are more likely to just sorta watch stuff, and I guess less likely to be jaded against anime. Or... something like that.

Wow that 12 Oz. Mouse promo might be a little more funnier than that whole show has been, even though it wasn't that funny. And you want to know another reason why anime bombs on Saturdays? They never went too much out of their way to promote it (minus a few occassions.) They'll promote Saturday comedies like crazy, they'll promote comedy anything really well, but they just don't like to promote anime for some reason (to be fair, they did a good job with Big O season 2 though, despite it not winning in the ratings.) When this weekday thing happens (which I think is a good idea), they better actually do commercials for it! If they are serious about wanting anime to do well on Adult Swim, they'll start promoting this change (in actual commercials, not just the cards!) as of next week.
I'll admit, they might not be successful at sometimes when they did try promoting or making something cool, but they can't just yell at the fans for the problems, they got to actually treat those programs like they do with comedies promotion wise.

They'll promote Saturday comedies like crazy, they'll promote comedy anything really well, but they just don't like to promote anime for some reason (to be fair, they did a good job with Big O season 2 though, despite it not winning in the ratings.) Networks are more inclined to promote shows that they've made or that they've invested in, which is why Big O got such promotion and a nice timeslot. They can either make money off of it somehow, or they're more motivated to make back the money invested in it via advertising revenue. With anime, it's like they're renting a show for a couple of years. It doesn't cost much, and doesn't need a lot of viewers to make it break even.
BTW, even with the ratings FMA got at 2 AM, that's still much better than what Anime Unleashed gets, let alone all the premium channels that air anime.
Yea, but it's not like it takes a lot of effort to make a great promo. Almost all the promos for the original AS Saturday rocked, as did their general promo from last year that only ran for about 2 weeks (Of course, it would have to be changed since Trigun's no longer in the lineup. Samruai Champloo could easily fill in, though). Their Eva promo is lackluster, their FMA promos are decent but nothing special, while their s-CRY-ed promo doesn't say anything about the show itself. Out of all the shows AS has aired this year, GitS and Paranoia Agent are the only ones with good promos. I can't comment on Samurai Champloo's since I don't even remember the SC promo.

The best source I have from G4 is from a PR not long ago announcing their new president, where they said they get an average of 50,000 viewers a day. That's total viewers.
And I'm just guessing with premiums based on the fact that the top 5 shows in premium television often go as low as the low millions, and it's usually a show on HBO, and it's something like Curb, Rome, or a recent movie that's come to television.
