Haha, loved it when Riley was falling down the stairs, that was an Eddie Murphy reference. Aunt Bunny!

Aunt Bunny
Oh no I'm falling down the stairs. *dup-dup-dup-dup*
Oh please help me Lord! *dup-dup-dup-dup*
My shoe! *dup-dup-dup-dup*
Oh Lord, I'm still falling down the stairs *dup-dup-dup-dup*

Heh, nice twist ending, but the episode was a bit too slow for my taste. Interesting though that Riley didn't learn anything from the end of the episode except his idol isn't what he seems and that he still pretty much is the same.

Nice references to past episodes though.

I thought this was a pretty good ep. Like how the focus was more on Riley this time around. This may not play with some people but I think it was pretty funny, espically him trying to injure himself and then acting tough in front of Huey at the end.

The opening scene with the card warnings was funny and reminded me of the comics when they have all those "editors' notes".

However, the opening minutes with them just watching TV is one of the very bad aspects of the comic, and I didn't think it was funny here either.

The actual story with Riley and Gangstalicious was dull. You could tell from scene one he was soft, and the twists weren't funny either.

However, Granddad's interaction with Huey and Riley is excellent and superbly funny, and I finally figured out something this show needs:

A story about just Huey, Riley and Granddad. No one shot characters or annoying recurring ones like Ruckus. In all the episodes I've seen, those are always the parts I laugh at and McGruder should focus more on these than the social commentary.

All that aside, 2/5

I understand Daffy Dork is looking for more character stories, but I'm actually happier with the social commentary.

Haha, 50 is gay. :D Can't stand the crap hip-hop and R&B released today. Holy crap, THANK you. I'm in TOTAL agreement. At work, the ONLY thing they play is the rap station. And nobody seems to notice it's the same 10 songs put on random, and the DJ occasionally screaming about some concert, or local event happening. They also don't notice every single song, is complete bullcrap. Why the hell can't there be any decent rap now? And why can't a new beat be longer than a 2 second loop?

And some artists came together and made a song in support of him. And you're listening to the lyrics, and just, "Wow!" If they were playing this kind of rap on the rap stations in the NY area, I'd actually listen to them. Nope, we get idiots whistling and whispering while someno talent R&B artist makes crap albums like Goodies.

So I haven't been too into The Boondocks since the pilot, which showed potential. This one finally made me laugh, though, and quite a few times. Loved Gangstalicious' "Play it for the Jury," Riley's announcement that he's falling down the stairs, and the twist ending. A nice skewering of gangsta rap.

What the heck is the difference?Hip-hop is the whole culture, rap is part of that. Breakdancers would be another part, DJ's would be another part. As I said, I don't like the crap hip-hop and rap being released because hip-hop, whether people believe it or not, is also a product that is wrapped, packaged, and promoted to communities across the country.

Rims, Escalades, crunk, and all that other trash is part of the culture that I despise. Package that with some no talent rappers whistling and whispering, and you have what you see today. I'm sorry, I'm a progressive at heart, so I'd like hip-hop to move in that direction instead of this corporate direction where lyrics are meaningless and rap is crap.

You're like...half right. You're named after a Marvin Gaye song, so know I'm not bringing you personally into question. None of what you claim to dislike about Hip Hop is even Hip Hop. That crap was manifested when "rappers" went mainstream and began whoring themselves out. (Breakdancing and disk jockies existed way before that time, but they aren't what you dislike.) Right there created a new entity that seperated Hip Hop and Rap. Hip Hop is a culture, Rap is all the ******** music you'll hear from someone like Lil' Jon. Rap is like a black sheep.

Not trying to futher derail the thread, but everytime Rap and Hip Hop are confused, it's like a spit in my face.

I'm not going based rap being mainstreamed, I still consider it to fall under the umbrella of hip-hop. And it really is extremely influential on culture. I don't think you're derailing the thread (I welcome it actually) because I say let's talk about this, isn't that the point of this episode?

When I initially wrote the post, I wrote rap but changed it to hip-hop because I was thinking, "Is it really just the music, or is it much more?" Even if it is just one aspect, if that aspect is an extremely large driving force, should I separate or include it. Reading what you've written, maybe I should separate it because you do have a very valid point. But then I'll go with another question, has rap redefined hip-hop?

But that's what this episode is about really, so I say let this thread go where it may because talking about rappers and their influence on culture is important.

Yeah definately agree everything you said is put in a nutshell. I hate rap but hip hop its ok and its different from rap. In todays Rap all I hear is cursing how I'm going to kill someone etc. At least in hip hop I don't hear cursing and its something I can enjoy listening to. Hip hop and rap are two different genres of music

I enjoy neither rap, nor hip hop, of course I'm hard pressed to enjoy most things made in the last twenty-five years or so. I can't help it, I'm a hopeless regressive.

I found this episode hard to even become engaged with. Gangstalicious had the diction of a delinquent bowl of pudding (probably vanilla pudding), which may have been part of the joke, but I couldn't understand if most of the time. What I suppose was really lacking was a sense of relevance to me, I'm pretty sure that this episode would've had more bite if I kept up with the culture of nonsense that has apparently built up around artists of the variety that was mocked. Now if this had been about Yardbird and cocaine, then I'd've had something.

There was an abundance of the strange and outrageous, but I never found myself with enough interest or engagement to figure it out.

You know what my favorite part of the entire episode was?

When Gangsta was talking about Ice Cube in the trunk and told Riley how that wasn't really him, and how after he started doin that girls started liking him and he had friends, etc etc.

Not a fantastic episode, but it had Riley and some real nice animation.

Still waiting for Ceasar.

I'm no animation expert, but the thing the bugs me about the show is that the characters move so stiffly. Sad, since the character designs are good.

Oh well, I liked this episode.

Strange, but I think it managed to do a better job of making fun of the thing it set out to make fun of, compared to less week's (which was pretty good). I thought it was good, had funny moments and some some sincere moments where Rily came face to face with the truth of Gansterlicious.....and then pretended to be ganster to Huey anyway, and starting to become like Gansterlicious. Great job of showing the the shallowness of the superficial gansta look.

That was hilarious. The ending shootout was a bit disturbing, but funny. I loved the twist of them missing every single shot. That was a nice way of acknowledging just how horrible gunment most shooters on TV are. Riley B.S.ing at the end was hilarious as well. The brick-sized cell phone had me rolling, mainly since I still have one of those somewhere.

This episode had a few laughs, but wasn't as good as last week's episode. The ending was funny as well as the falling down the steps. The thing many people may have missed was the Ice Cube comment. Ice Cube rose to promience as an ultra gangsta type rapper. In reality he wasn't as hardcore as he protrayed in his lyrics. His Fridays franchise is more like he himself came up. So Gantalicious admiring a studio gangster goes on to be another studio gangster.

PS.
If people do not like or understand Hip Hop why watch this show at all? If you don't have an appreciation of the genre this show parodies then why subject yourself to watching the show? I hate modern country music thus I don't watch Reba.

Duke

I think I'm in the minority here, as I thought the episode was pretty funny. (Hell, I've enjoyed most of the episodes so far) Anytime Riley, Huey, and Granddad interacted with someone it got a laugh out of me, which is pretty much the same for most of the episodes aired so far.

But some people hate that rap has become such a staple of pop culture in general, which is why some of them don't like anything having to do with it. Seeing as how both ATHF and Stroker and Hoop, and most of the AS bumps have both touched on it, it's pretty much a definite staple

Though it is probably too late now...

By now (because I totally missed it, until pointed out today, gah) several people noticed some language come through on this episode and pointed it out in thread. Well, we have this little rule where we don't want people calling that sort of thing out. It's CN's job to edit, and we don't necessarily want to provoke them into making edits or going back and toning down material. What's done is done now, but for future reference lets keep that talk off the forums.

Oh, and if you lost a post or had one editted it's because I went back and cleaned it up.

For real. It's difficult to decipher whether this was a jab at 50 or Game. Hell, it works for both though.

I hate 50 Cent. Back when he first came out with "How To Rob.." I thought it was one of the funniest things I ever heard, but never really got too into his music. Then all of a sudden he gets shot and he's a quasi gillionare. I saw a 50 year old lady in her car the other day bumpin her head to it.

I just don't get it. What's the appeal?

Now, on the flip side. Where the hell is Busta Rhymes new CD? Didn't he join Aftermath like 400 years ago to make a Dre produced album?

This one could've been A LOT better. They could have gone somewhere with the orange juice subplot. Also, my hopes were dashed when Grandad didn't beat Riley for drinking his orange juice.

I will say this episode was worth it for one line from Huey:
"Why don't we all go to college so we don't end up like Gangstalicious?"

XD i think this episode was solid!
loved the warning at the beginning, and i just love it for the fact it had full Riley time! "you're scared too!" "nigga i'm 8!"
i really liked the story...theres a moral to this right? beware worship of false idols...or something something.

ANYWAY! Riley clearly learned nothing! and seemed to just want to blank everything out by twisting what happened. "eww they bustin slob!" XD
i like Riley's personality...cause well, its very much like an 8 year old would act, especially trying to convince Grandpa to take him to the hospital. "i'm fallin down the stairs! oh my shoe!"

and the eye witness...oh geez...i know how Huey feels, i've seen it from all races. "wha' ha' hapin was' days was fightin" gag. you'd figure Grandpa would have sent Huey to look for Ri...or have Huey just go himself...he should know his brother enough to figure out that he would go to the hospital.

what i like about this ep, is it basically did what a lot of people roll their eyes at about this new Gangsta Rap scene...that pretty much has soild HipHop. various rappers look like they are just playing a role and believing it. or they realize they are and everyone who admires them are just ignorant.

hmmm
two male kisses in one day XD at least Naruto and Sasuke didn't..."bust slob"
leave that up to fanfictiongirls and doujinshi.

still can't figure out why people who hate this show so much watch it.
anyway, i think this whole episode was quotable and full of laughs...for me anyway :p

Riley continues to be the one I dislike the most out of the lead trio, if only because he always wants to start trouble or be doing things he shouldn't be doing. Like in this episode, buying into all the hype behind Gangstalicious. Now I don't blame him... I'm sure many people would do the same and be shocked when the truth came out.

This was a so-so episode until the very end. That ending was just unreal, with the whole gay lovers' kiss (definitely didn't see that coming), and then the kidnappers trying to shoot to kill and actually missing! Like, someone mentioned, it's nice to recognize that gunmen aren't 100% accurate. Regardless, I'll fall back to the 'Riley' metaphor... that doesn't mean I will be any less scared if I somehow find myself on the wrong end of a 'blindman's bluff' execution.

7.5 out of 10 for "The Story of Gangstalicious."

The Game WAS underground, for a while. You'd hear people talking about how he was on the rise a long while back. I still remember the first time I saw him on the cover of a mag over a year and a half ago, but he's been out in the mainstream for a while.

Anyway, this show's the best thing on Adult Swim right now. It's hillarious; I know so many people like this, hell I have a lot of them stuck in the culture.
