Battleships? Those things are so outdated and obselete, why would any modern force use them?

Wow, Asuka sounds more annoying than I imagined.

I guess no one really has any love for NERV. Espeically Captian Goval here.

I can't believe Kaji just said that. LOL

Asuka's german accent is preety funny. Wait, now I recongize Asuka's voice. She sounds like Kaorin from Azumanga Daioh!

Wait, the Captian didn't order all flight assets off the carrier? You would think he would do that so the fighters are not caught on the ground when they're under attack.

Poor military Otaku. Those planes going to waste must have broken his heart.

Poor Shinji, getting abused by Asuka like that.

Wait, how can the battleships fire underwater? It's not like tropedeos....

Asuka is funny because she is such a witch.

Overall, a major imprioovement over the past episodes. Fun, enjoyable, and and holds interest. 4 out of 5.

For every episode, I will post a comparison list to how the anime differs from the manga adaptation (written and drawn by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto). I am well aware that the anime series is the official canon, with the as yet uncompleted manga the adaptation (even though the 1st manga chapter was published before the 1st episode was broadcasted). Nevertheless, the manga, created by one of NGE’s creators, has some interesting points not in the anime, enough for it to be recorded here.

Boy, does the manga differ from the anime here! The only things that stay the same:

-Asuka and her Unit 02 Eva fights an Angel overseas with a fleet of ships.
-Shinji, Kensuke, and Toji meet Asuka in her yellow dress. She angers Toji.
-At a table, Kaji asks Shinji about her bed manner (to the shock of those hearing).
-Kaji comments about Shinji's fame and abilities (his luck).
-Kaji delivers a strange organism to Gendo.
-At school, Toji and Kensuke are relieved about never seeing Asuka again, until Asuka joins their class.

Differences:
-Asuka’s Angel battle, the major plot of this episode, occurs behind the scenes in the manga. In fact, none of the established cast travel overseas for it. The manga has Misato, Shinji, Ritsuko, and Rei watching footage of the battle at NERV. Mention is made about the unseen pilot’s talents, such as a college education; it seems Manga Asuka graduated from a German University at 14 (This makes Misato comment that this new pilot may be the normal one of the pilots; Shinji smirks).
-The setting for the boys' meeting Asuka is different. It starts after they leave school. Toji and Kensuke comment about Shinji's luck with women (Rei's actually talking to him!). The trio then pass an arcade where they spot a beautiful redhead playing with a UFO retriever machine (containing a UFO of Shinji). The boys fall head over heels for the beauty. But the girl’s violent tantrum over failure to get a UFO causes Shinji and Toji’s attraction to take a dive (Kensuke, meanwhile, loves this girl’s dominant personality). The girl then spots them, demanding they pay her a fee for peeping under her skirt. She then insults Toji, presuming him to be poor by his clothes. She then bumps into a punk, ruining his video playing. He reacts angrily at the redhead, who kicks him in the face! The punk’s gang join in, with the girl fighting them all with somersaults and karate. During the mess, Shinji gets smacked by one of the punks (my, Shinji is a hand-magnet!), causing the redhead to come to the rescue in a series of somersault, and kicking butt. A police siren causes the girl to make an escape, with Shinji & company following suit.
-Parting from his friends, Shinji heads for NERV headquarters. He then sees the violent girl at the gates. Shinji is horrified to learn that she's Asuka Langley Soryu, the new EVA pilot!!! Asuka is likewise horrified to learn Shinji's own credentials.
-Manga Asuka gives this ‘sweet little girl’ act to the personnel, relating about the arcade incident as if she was some innocent bystander and Shinji as her knight in shining armour. When Shinji attempts to contradict this story, he gets his buttocks pinched by Asuka, followed by her giving him a slurred warning to keep quiet or else...
-Manga Kaji gives Gendo the organism before meeting the gang.
-Instead of Kensuke and Toji, it is Rei who is with Shinji, Asuka, and Misato in their meeting Kaji. At NERV luncheon, Misato recieves a headlock by a mysterious person, whom Asuka refers to as Kaji. Misato is shocked. During Kaji’s question to Shinji about Misato’s bedtime manner, Rei is the only female not shocked.
-During class, where the teacher gives his speech about the second Impact, Shinji drops his pencil, which Asuka then picks up and hands it back. Shinji thinks he's found the girl's soft side, until he holds the pencil, covered with gum!
-In the manga, it is Asuka (instead of Ritsuko in episode 7) who explains the EVA Pilots' mission against the Angels.
-Unlike his anime counterpart, manga Shinji isn’t meek to not think of Asuka negatively, mentally calling her a b---- (a word used a lot by various people to describe the girl).

Comments:
-Okay, Asuka’s finally here, and the show is about a third over.
-I like both versions of Asuka's introduction, thought the manga has her going Akane and kicking butt!
-Poor Toji. I liked his cap.
-Highlight: Shinji wearing a female plugsuit and his difficulty synching with Unit 02 (does he really need to wear a plugsuit?).
-The dialogue to Asuka's 'wunderbar' scene would be different in episode 22.

It seems anime Asuka doesn't have her moment to shine until the movie, considering she always needs Shinji (her manga counterpart took down Angel 4 by herself).

ACK!!! I didn't realize Evangelion was on until the episode was halfway over. Hopefully, I remember to tune in on time next week, especially considering how it's the legendary DDR episode.

So the whole episode was over a baby in a suitcase? Actually, the baby in the suitcase is very important to the storyline, especially when it comes to Gendou's secret intentions later on in the series.

How is that a baby??That's not a baby, that's a fetus. And it's still alive (and growing!) even though they've been trying to suppress its growth by encasing it in Bakelite plastic.

Didn't any of you hear any of the dialogue?
Pay attention to what's said...
Gendo: "This is Adam; the first Man."

This is what that fetus is. What does it mean? I an't tell you yet...

Oh, here's some bonus info you guys missed... (It's meant to be obvious, so not a spoiler... Other than the angel's name, everything else can be known by watching, listening to, and thinking about, the information given thus far.)

The angel Gaghiel was NOT attacking the shipping of Eva Unit 2. It was trying to obtain the suitcase. Eva Unit 2 was actually the escort (Asuka didn't know that), there in case an angel shows up (and Kaji fully expected it to.). Kaji and his suitcase was more important than Unit-2 and even Asuka's life combined, and that's why he was allowed to escape on a Yak-custom when the others are fighting for their lives.

And yes, that suitcase is Nuclear-bomb resistant. It had VERY important contents, after all.

For bringing the series out of emo mode for a few episodes, "Asuka Strikes" deserves accolade. However, I find the following episode, "Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!" even better than this one. ;)

My trying-to-be-regular review will be up when I get a chance to actually re-view it, probably this evening.

For now, since we're asking questions that have probably already been answered to death, someone has to ask this.

Rei was there before the beginning of the series. The First Children, piloting Unit 00.

The series opens with Shinji's arrival. He pilots Unit 01 and is by now known as The Third Children.

Now we have Asuka, The Second Children, piloting Unit 02.

Since Shinji was on hand before Asuka, why is she Second and he Third?

(I could almost think that Asuka would say that it's because she's better than him, until I'd point out that by that logic Wondergirl would be better than her.)

Did the Marduk Report spit out her name before Shinji's? And has she been training in Germany all this time while Shinji was forced into battling Angels with no training?

If she was picked before him, and 01 was before 02, wouldn't that mean 01 was meant for Asuka and 02 for Shinji?

Admittedly, Unit 02 being for The Second Children does make sense; one might be tempted to say it's the only part that does make sense. It would make sense if Rei was The Oughth Children er sum junk, for reasons spoilerish and otherwise, but by now I'm babbling.

Did the Marduk Report spit out her name before Shinji's? And has she been training in Germany all this time while Shinji was forced into battling Angels with no training? Yes. In a later episode we see that she was selected as the Second Child when she was only five or six years old, and has been training ever since--hence her pride and her irritation towards Shinji the n00b.

If she was picked before him, and 01 was before 02, wouldn't that mean 01 was meant for Asuka and 02 for Shinji? No. Shinji and Asuka were not the original test pilots for Eva Units 01 and 02.

A note to all 1st time viewers of EVA:

Pay attention to everything that is being said, as it is vital to understanding. But don't take the words as gospel.

Because
1. Characters regularly lie to each other. For both personal reasons and work reasons.

2. Characters who think they know information can actually make mistakes; they might think they are right, when their info might be wrong.

Therefore think about who would know what, and exactly when someone would prefer to lie than tell the truth...

As a bonus, please take special notice of words spoken by people in high command positions: Gendo, Fuyusuki, Dr Ritsuko Akagi and her assistant, and special agent Kaji. These people know the most information, but are also least likely to be honest about it.

(Note that Misato isn't on that list; she was only recently transfered to NERV and is not part of the inner circle. Not even past friendships would allow her to question Ritsuko about her work...)

Yeah that whole thing with the German chick and that guy when Shinji and crew got to the ship was cracking the $%^& out of me. Heh no hard feelings I think most people would agree with your statment but I dont know about the OPEN! OPEN! OPEN! thing. Maybe it's just you.:D

I kinda, and I dont feel like going into long discussions tonight, understand Shinji. I mean, he's extreamly modest compared to Asuka who has a 'healthy' ego.

Shinji is the kid in your 9th or 8th grade class who would rather dissaper in the background, have about 2 or 4 friends max, and be happy with life with occasinal early teen angst tendencies. Hence, your normal teenage boy.

Rei is the quiet, loner who would sit in class and hardly talk throught the year. She would hate reciting reports infront of the classroom. And is always in inner conflict about her identity.

And lastly Asuka is the loudest, abnoxious, class clown but in reality has a lot of issues. Especially around the last eppisodes.

Personally, I've seen a lot more Rei stuff both in the merch and fanart. However, the fact that in either case it is still highlighting someone other than the main character (Shinji) is probably confusing to some folks.

Back on topic, I like this episode. "And here's your change" and "uhh, strudel?" are great lines, and the grandiose sea based mech battle is just too great.

A bit late, but I'm going to contribute to the dissection of this episode now.

We open in Gendo's office, and apparently more conspiring going on.

Misato is taking Shinji and the stooges - Toji and Suzuhara - on a field trip? Wha?

How'd Misato swing this? It not exactly a situation for tourists, much less schoolchildren, unless they have their Eva pilot's license.

Now she's saying they're on a date?!? What, she's on a date with three boys? And I thought current teachers were messed up.

'That cute little boat' - which boat? Oh, the biggest one, of course.

So the fleet dates from the late '90's. I guess in the 15, 20 years since there's not been the money in anyone's budget for military technological development or more ships er sum junk.

I'm guessing the admiral doesn't know much about the Eva program if he thinks that Eva is a children's toy. Technically it's piloted by a teenager, and it's not really a toy,...

Our first look at The Second Children, Asuka Langley Sohryu. oh my.

The soldiers, er, um, sailors seem kind of blase about all those kids running around on their ships.

Asuka & Misato greet each other like they know each other. Have they met before? What, was Misato transferred to Tokyo from Germany?

WHAAAHHH!!!!! That's all I have to say about that thing with Asuka's dress. Like she couldn't have panties or a belt or something? And then with Toji giving her change, double WHAAAHHH!!!!! (I'd still like to know why Toji gets three voice actors, while noone else gets more than one)

So the 3rd branch of NERV is in Germany.

Some army - navy rivalry going on here? Been there, seen that.

And we find that there is more old history and such stuff as we see that Kaji - Asuka's crush apparently - goes way back with Misato.

I'm surprised that everyone is being so calm around the table; what, no one is trying to play footsie? Um, after Kaji's question of Shinji, never mind. Shinji could have just said, 'how would I know?'

Asuka's just met The Third Children, and already she doesn't like him.

And yet she drags him along with her to bear witness to 'the first true Eva', probably to revel in her success & to rub his nose in it.

Do I get the feeling that Asuka's never seen an Angel before?

Don't they know conventional weapons don't work on Angel? What, weren't the people at UN command briefed on the failed attempts on the Third Angel?

Come to think of it, maybe he's never seen an Angel before either.

Ah, confirmed; Asuka wears a bra but no panties. And then she goes flinging the 'hentai' accusations left & right. Now that's just entrapment.

You can see Asuka salivating; she finally gets some real action with the Angel and the Eva and the...

Asuka would be the first to say she could handle an Angel by herself, so just why does she need Shinji to go along with her? So she can rub his nose in it some more?

For those who missed what Shinji said, that word 'fehler' is the German word which in this case means error.

Not to be into ethnic stereotyping, but the Germans do have a reputation for being supremely confident of their own superiority to other nations and cultures. Then again, so do the Japanese, and the Chinese, and the Russians, and the French, and, well, yes, Americans as well.

Funny. When she's talking in German it sounds German but when she's speaking Japanese it sounds English. Funny.

Misato and that admiral are literally fighting over that microphone.

They're gonna play hopscotch?

Um, Admiral, that Angel and that Eva are running rampant through & around your ships; maybe you should scramble the jets already!

They had 7 seconds of internal power to go from that minute.

The progressive knife, no doubt a new weapon exclusive to Unit 02.

And Unit 02 is engulfed by The, what are we at by now, Sixth Angel?, not unlike Unit 01's treatment by The Third Angel.

Shinji would have been justified in quoting Sean Connery's line from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - I'm waiting to be impressed - to Asuka.

When the going gets tough, Kaji boogies on out of there on that Yak-38 Custom.

So B-Type equipment is no good underwater? Is that what they're saying? So why does Unit 02 have B-Type equipment? Was A-Type er sum junk not to be had?

They entered the Angel's body, so does that mean they were eaten? Hmm, could be.

It's preposterous? They are NERV; preposterous is what they do best, especially with Misato running operations.

She's telling him not to touch her controls without her permission?!?!? She TOLD him to do something!!!

Not that it really matters to anyone but the really competitive (like Asuka), but when they were chanting 'open'? - we saw & heard Shinji saying it 4 times, but Asuka only 3, I think; that one in the middle was kind of a gray area.

Wait, I'm seeing a dozen ships there, easily; if they were down to two battleships, what were all of those other ships?

They broke their synch records for 7 seconds; I wonder if the 7 seconds of internal power down to which they were when they plugged in is just a coincidence.

The first human being?!? Even if it was Adam it would be millennia old!

They won't have to put with her any more; yeah, right. Ever hear of famous last words, Toji?

She's taking liberties, isn't she? Coming right up to the front of the class, writing her name on the board, like she was their teacher? I have been informed that she would become friends with the Class Rep, but still...

And next week, the episode that involves a certain three-initialed-interactive game. Some of us old-timers just can't get used to not thinking about those three initials in connection with East Germany. Cya then.

Do I get the feeling that Asuka's never seen an Angel before? Considering all the Angels so far have attacked Tokyo...

The progressive knife, no doubt a new weapon exclusive to Unit 02. Wait and see...

So B-Type equipment is no good underwater? Is that what they're saying? So why does Unit 02 have B-Type equipment? Was A-Type er sum junk not to be had? They weren't expecting an Angel to attack them underwater. Well, Kaji and Gendo were, but nobody else.

Most anime have the teacher write the name, but other than that it's typical of other anime showing off new students.

How'd Misato swing this? It not exactly a situation for tourists, much less schoolchildren, unless they have their Eva pilot's license. Keep that thought in mind around episode 17/18.

Asuka & Misato greet each other like they know each other. Have they met before? What, was Misato transferred to Tokyo from Germany? Yes. Misato was Asuka's overseer when she was a child.

WHAAAHHH!!!!! That's all I have to say about that thing with Asuka's dress. Like she couldn't have panties or a belt or something? She was wearing panties. (http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/9797/asuflash6kd.gif)

Do I get the feeling that Asuka's never seen an Angel before? It's a given that she'd be briefed about the Angels, but she hasn't seen a live one. All the Angels that have appeared since her birth attacked Tokyo-3.

Don't they know conventional weapons don't work on Angel? What, weren't the people at UN command briefed on the failed attempts on the Third Angel? Remember that the admiral was a blowhard who had no respect for NERV. He would at least try to kill the Angel before giving in to Misato's authority.

B stands for "Basic". Essentially the minimum equipment for an EVA in combat. Just a dagger with maybe a Depleted Uranium rapid-fire rail gun (called the pellet gun in the show) or other small:D weapon.
(Note that the rifle Shinji uses would take out mountains if used that way. The slugs are at least 3 feet thick. Nothing normal would stop it.)

F-Type means "Flight", essentially the modified bomber-transport used in the Jet-alone episode.

There are other types, but it's really not that important; Evangelions are not modular in design, so you can't just swap parts around like a Battletech mech.

I think that part was edited out, but I don't know. This episode was funny as hell.

This episode was funny as hell. If you think last week's episode was funny, just wait until you see tomorrow's episode. ;)

I don't think it can top last week's ep though. But I will just have to wait and decide myself. Is there going to be something similar as the funny stuff in this ep like last week's ep?

"Dance like you want to win" is an instant classic, one of the most memorable episodes of the series.

I think that part was edited out, but I don't know.More than likely it was added in for the Platinum release, as I know it wasn't on the original DVDs.

I have no idea where the previous image is from (secondary art or the original animation cel perhaps), but here's an actual screenshot from the DVD:
