View Full Version : Movies that need Special Editions

There's tons of movies that got crappy DVD releases. What are some that need re-releases with either better versions of the film and/or more special features?

House of 1000 Corpses - As gruesome as the movie already is, I've heard that Lion's Gate still had to chop it up pretty badly to avoid the dreaded NC-17 rating. The special features on the current disc are great, but I want the unrated cut of the film.

Rumble in the Bronx - IMO the greatest "ass whoopin" movie ever made. The problem with it is the abortion that is the English dub. The current R1 DVD doesn't have the original language (Mandarin?). I'd also like a longer blooper reel/making of feature than the Jackie Chan standard of putting them in during the credits.

Polterguist: The Film is still popular today because of a Curse linked to it! A Documentry about curses in Hollywood would be the big feature of the disc!

Superman II: Better than the 1st one but is on a barebones DVD! WE NEED A SPECIAL EDITION OF THIS FILM BADLY

Grease: Good Movie, BAD DVD!

Austin Powers I: Great Movie, Wrong Aspect Ratio! I want a special Editon of the film with DTS, a 2.35:1 Widescreen Transfer and everything from the current DVD (Sans the Fullscreen Version)

South Park: Bigger longer and Uncut:IT NEEDS SPECIAL EDITION BADLY! Especially the Unrated version!

Home Alone 1 & 2I second that.

As for my picks, I don't think I'd say they were crappy releaases, but I just believe that they have the potential to be better. Anyway, here they are:

-Beavis and Butt-head Do America
-Honey, I Shrunk The Kids
-American History X
-Ghost
-Mortal Kombat
-Mortal Kombat: Annihilation
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
-Transformers: The Movie

-Mortal Kombat
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2
Definitely. And I'd say if you're going to SE the first two Ninja Turtles films, SE the third one as well.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm needs an SE, as does Batman: Sub-Zero.

I think the unofficial Bond film Never Say Never Again could use an SE, but its doubtful they could get anyone to talk about it.

language (Mandarin?). I'd also like a longer blooper reel/making of feature than the Jackie Chan standard of putting them in during the credits. There are a ton of Jackie Chan flicks that have bare bones releases, not just Bronx. I can't tell you how fast I'd run to the store if a S.E. of Operation Condor were released. ;) Austin Powers I: Great Movie, Wrong Aspect Ratio! I want a special Editon of the film with DTS, a 2.35:1 Widescreen Transfer and everything from the current DVD (Sans the Fullscreen Version) The weird thing is, I didn't even realize it was wrong until I read stuff on the internet about it. Now I'm a bit miffed, because I know there's an incorrectly framed film in my collection and there's nothing I can do about it because a better version doesn't exist. Ditto for Back to the Future Trilogy. Home Alone 1 & 2 The stupid thing is, Fox has had S.E.s of these two films on the backburner for a LONG time. They're just really slow about getting it done. -Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 I hate to say it, but the release that's currently out is probably the best we're gonna get, especially since it was released in 2002 and there are no signs of anything better on the horizon. It's not like the movie has a huge demand behind it, anyway.

As for my picks, "Apocalypse Now" is in dire need of a S.E. When you hear about all the turmoil behind the scenes, from Sheen's heart attack to going overbudget to the delays in production to harsh shooting conditions and just general problems, it would make for a GREAT documentary.

I guess, but I don't give a damn about TMNT3.

Well then they probably wouldn't need to SE TMNT2 or 3. Just the first one. They did that with The Karte Kid series when they rereleased them, and only the first one was actually a special edition.

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was filmed in Super 35 so you're actually getting more (2.40:1 opened up to 1.96:1). Nick Meyer did the same thing with Star Trek VI.

Yeah, it would make for a nice 2-disc SE.

Speaking of TMNT getting a SE release, when I finally bought my copy on DVD there was a sticker on it that said it had special features. I was amazed that the movie acutally got a SE release but when I looked closer I noticed several of the features couldn't possibly be true.

Sure enough when I got home it was the same DVD with the crummy Maze game that I had rented a few years ago. I knew some moron must have put the wrong sticker on it and when I went back a few weeks later I checked and sure enough all the DVDs had the same sticker.

Besides TMNT 1 I'd at least like a Batman: Mask of the Phantasm DVD with audio commentary.

heh....i actually worked with Jackie's JCE (Jackie Chan Emporer) and Joy Sales to help out with the Hong Kong DVD release of their latest movie "The Myth". (note that "The Myth" is also from the same director of "Rumble in the Bronx"). I'll see if I can find any way to address your concerns with Stanley Tong. "The Myth" has an excellent DVD release (subbed extras, subbed commentary track all thanks to me and a good 3 discs worth of them). You can grab that for the time being.

and in case you're wondering, I translated the dvd commentary (well, most of it except for maybe roughly 7 minutes of the film because I overworked and got too tired). Had my usual editor from jc-news.net, JF (Judy) to edit my translations. It was fun to actually work on a DVD.

I'm now scheduled to work on the DVD release of "A Chinese Tall Story" starring Nicholas Tse (Gen-X Cops) & Charlene Choi (Vampire Effect) and I sent a message to Jackie personally that I will help out on "Project BB" for free. (guarantees me a free copy autographed dvd that way. :P )

I beleive we might see SE for all three ninja Turtle movies in 2007 when the new movie hits, since they are only barebone releases.

Well if New Line were ever to even remotely considering a TMNT S.E., they should definitely include "TMNT: Behind the Shells" as an extra. I must've watched that documentary 50 times as a kid. I still have most of it memorized. :p

I know theres probably nobody else out there interested in this, but id love to see a special edition for the old "Return to Oz" movie. The DVD version i recently rented had atleast one (probably more) scenes edited out. And if there was ever a movie that needed a commentary track this one was it. Id also love to see a Dr. Who-style "Information Text" type deal for all the Oz references in it.

Far from it, I enjoyed the movie alot when I saw it on Disney and was disappointed to hear that the current DVD release is edited.

Robocop (im talking an AFFORDABLE version of the SE that DOESNT require buying all 3 films)Isn't that trilogy set only like thirty bucks? I don't know what all it contains, but I've got it where I work and have thought about picking it up because it's pretty cheap.
btw,,does anyone think we'll be seeing 10th anniversery editions of chasing amy, dogman, and jay and silent bob strike back in 06,09,and 2011 respectively?I doubt it. Dogma's current SE is already great and I don't think Chasing Amy was a big enough success with Kevin Smith's fans to really warrant it. Who knows on J&SBSB. That's another one who's current release pretty much covers everything.

Now I'm a bit miffed, because I know there's an incorrectly framed film in my collection and there's nothing I can do about it because a better version doesn't exist. Ditto for Back to the Future Trilogy. You are aware that Universal set up a disc exchange program for Parts II and III of the BTTF Trilogy, don't you?

If you can't get in on it anymore, you might want to know that all newer pressings of the widescreen set have properly framed video, although they are missing the booklet insert loaded with redundant info. You can buy the widescreen sets pretty cheap at Best Buy (~$22 I think). Wal-Mart only has the fullscreen prints.

Only Kill Bill springs to mind.

As well as interviews and the regular stuff, Id personally really like to have the two merged together and for the first one to in uncut/full colour like it was oringally supposed to be.

Other than that I cant really think of any. Not really a fan of 2disc editions tbh.

Doctor Who: The Enemy Within, It's not out in R1 yet (Possibly a Rights Issue, But the BBC owns the Doctor Who Name lock, Stock, and Barrel!), But if it FINALLY comes out on DVD here in the US, I expect it to be a double disc Collectors edition (Complete with DTS)

Rush Hour: THe Original Rush Hour was one of the best single disc special editions of the time in 1999, well times had changed since then so I think the first Rush Hour is due for a 2 Disc Special Edition (In time for the 3rd Rush Hour)

Mission Impossible, I think this film needs a much needed upgrade! Heck Paramount can release the original TV series on DVD as Well in time for the release of MI:III!
