Chainsaw of Heaven(piano version)
By Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson
Come hither, come hither, gather 'round and listen
For I shall tell you a tale for a while, a spell
About the weapon of Heaven forged from Hell
A mighty blade of justice with wings of seraphim, pure as white snowy day
A blade of rotating steel that good and evil can feel as it slices through their very bone and snew
The Chainsaw of Heaven bears down upon the sinners as it slashes their skin and cleanses the earth of their mortal sin
A weapon that descends from the skies as it's wings spreads and flies, as the divine steel passes judgement upon thee
(Chorus)
And the Chainsaw of Heaven is a'comin
A tool of the Creator's will
The Pagans will cry as their false gods die, in a blaze of rotating steel
Their tears of blood shall seep into the mud, and return down to hell where they belong
Don't worry my child, if your heart is brave and true, then the Chainsaw of Heaven will pass over you
The Weapon is justice, eternal and divine, a judge with a rotating blade and wings
But cross the line and it will rip out your spine, and do many other harmful things
The only thing to do, is repent and begin anew, so you don't see what Hell brings
The machine will scream and rip out your spleen, if you don't act good and instead act mean
So in life as always keep an eye in the sky and watch to see if all is well, because if not, then you're going to Hell.

There aren't even suppose to be a chainsaw weapon for the EVAs unless you play the "Evangelions 2" PS2 Game.
What's next? N^2 mine launcher? Extra armour for Unit-1? S^2 organ-powered Jet-alone with sledge hammer?

Yet another bad day for Tokyo...
Man, this episode feels so Fillery. The story is predicatable and isn't so dramatic, and adds little to the overall plot. All it does it give us some background into the world of EVA, and Misato fanservice.
I can understand why Gendo would want to sabotage the Jet Alone, so even the hints of conspiarcy didn't do much for the episode.

I'm guessing Shinji's dad has some sort of big sinister plan if he's going to all the trouble of sabotaging the competition. The morning routine of Shinji/Misato/and the penguin was a fun angle.
Nextweek I finally get to see why Asuka is so popular. From the look of the clip it should be a fun episode.:D

So am I the only one who truly enjoyed this episode? Granted it's not terribly exciting... but it's a nice spotlight on Misato, giving us a nice shot of her character in its completeness. It also highlights the rapport she and Shinji are developing, which as I've previously mentioned is one of the highlights of Eva for me.
Next week is when things get wild and crazy!
Eh, it'd fit better with Episode 10...I believe? Or was it 11?

No, you're not the only one. This clarification would've been harder and noisier if it took place after Asuka joined, and the point would've either been sledgehammered home or buried.

The opening scene with Misato and Shinji always cracks me up and I think it's cool they acknowledge the existence of others trying to make a difference when it comes to fighting the Angels. Plus, I like how this episode deviates from the norm of just fighting Angels. In summation, I guess you could say I like this episode because it's not "just another Angel episode."

The problem I have with this is that we never hear from these things ever again. It'd be different if we saw the Jet-Alone 2 or something, but we never refer to anything that happened in this episode ever again. It just feels out of place.

Jet Alone "Zero" is in the Evangelions 2 PS2 Game.
This episode is the first one that shows underhanded tactics by Nerv. I know everyone is used to this by now, but ten year ago kids in my school were shocked when I told them what this episode is about:
(true conversation)
Kid: I don't get it... What happened this episode?
Me: The JA got sabotaged by Nerv because Nerv need the money.
Kid: But... Hey! Aren't they the good guys?
Me: I never said that.
Kid: errrr.... (brain overload as his idea that all "alien-combating humans are good guys" was being crushed into a ball)
*************
Of course, nowadays people expect secretive organisations that build giant war machines to be backstabbing greedy monsters. But ten years ago that wasn't so obvious...

And so we have another episode of the greatest anime of all time, or the most overblown, depending on who you talk to. Let's get to it.
We open in Gendo's HU-U-U-U-UGE office, to a slight whiff of the possibility of sabotage.
Morning in the Katsuragi-Ikari house. The music for these scenes sounds very familiar to me. I think I remember hearing it once & again on the Bible anime The Flying House. (If you want to see if I'm right it still airs on the Trinity network Saturday mornings.) Gotta love how Misato wakes up, with that yell & all. But then I'm from the South.
It might be her turn to cook, but by now would he really want to eat her cooking? Maybe she had that in mind.
He has become very used to living with her by now, just chewing her up one side and down another, in a very soft-spoken way of course. That old maid line went over the line imo, though.
Embarrassing? She seemed sufficiently clothed to me, and I'm the resident prude. All the key areas were covered, and then some.
Does anyone else find it strange that Toji wears the strap to his book bag on top of his head? Speaking of Toji, does anyone else find it strange that he has three v/a's while no one else has more than one? Not to mention unfair?
So who did she call after he left and tell to keep an eye on him? I'm thinking Rei. I'd better watch that ep again and see if I can see a phone in her place.
Toji and Kensuke in stereo; this is a bit freaky. Now, if they do a Crimson brothers thing and ping-pong an end of a conversation...
Shinji doesn't know anything about Eva? He was reading that manual in the first episode, wasn't he? I guess he was busy then, but he has had time to read it since.
Silhouettes, from left to right: Shinji, Hyuga, Maya, Ritsuko, Misato.
The 01 unit is still being repaired from damaged sustained against the Fifth Angel. Other than one cameo appearance at school, we don't see Rei in this ep.
Unit 02 is arriving from Germany, which will be a major factor starting in the next episode.
Gendo is flying a UN 797, from Boeing of course. Well, we are at the 787 by now, or 7E7.
US against the world, like that's anything new. And we're allergic to unemployment. I hesitate to pursue this as that way lies flameage.
What country is that guy from with whom Gendo is talking? And they'll be involved starting with Unit 08? Just how big a fleet of Evas does NERV contemplate having?
When Dr. Akagi mentions Second Impact, notice the Captain's reaction. As I understand things, this is foreshadowing.
That look in Penpen's eyes, and face for that matter: priceless.
This morning Katsuragi is all business.
Who can do whatever they like, this private concern? The SSDF?, no wait, they're not allowed to interfere. Come to think of it, NERV can pretty much, no wait, there's the UN and those guys Gendo was reporting to.
Japan Heavy Chemical Industrial Cooperative. I would think it would be MITI, but as we will see if we read the subtitles they are on board.
Anyone get the feeling this company is trying to make NERV look bad, table for two & all that? Although otoh, couldn't there have been a bigger delegation? Maybe this reflects on NERV's opinion of this company, not the other way around.
That hysterical woman bit definitely crossed the line. Such a chauvinistic culture, this.
He is right in that NERV's day will not last forever. All things must pass.
So Misato just lays her head on the table, chewing on a straw er sum junk, while Ritsuko does all the talking on the outside. Then in the locker room (locker room? What the?), she goes crazy with the kicking. Is anyone else thinking passive-agressive?
"He's petty, not worthy of attention.", she says, while putting that sample report whatever-it-is to the flame, with this freaky look on her face. Well, it freaked me out.
Mmm, some Ritsuko fan-service too.
Kozaic version 7.2.2- wait, what was the delete thingy? Was that the sabotage?
You'd think by now people - even people on the screen - would know not to utter phrases which could be filed under Famous Last Words; phrases like, I dunno, "Don't worry, folks, there's no danger at all"? j
That walking is impressive. It did better than Shinji his first time out in unit 01, although he was thrown into it kind of quickly.
Imo Misato did a bit of a cheap shot, although after the 'hysterical woman' line, I think we can excuse it.
Acts of man are better than acts of God? That don't sound right to me, but it wouldn't. Let's see people make a blade of grass.
So now NERV has to clean up the mess. Say, that bureaucrat on the phone, the one playing golf, does he sound like the president to anyone else?
That man is now utterly humiliated. Him giving up the code word makes it official.
Someone might think of this: if everything else, every fail-safe, every option, everything that wasn't supposed to fail; if all of that failed; is there any compelling reason to think that this wouldn't also fail?
It's a miracle? Well, miracles are acts of God. She knows that this miracle was man-made, therefore, it was a set-up.
And we're back to what passes for normal at this point in the series. Of course you realize this means things are going to be shaken up, and so they will be in the next episode. Cue up the Wagner as the Valkyrie rides into town. I'm talking about the Teutonic Terror, the Deutschlander diva, the almighty Alsatian, She Who Must Not Be Crossed, the one who comes up with such nicknames for everyone else: Asuka Langley Soryu. The title of the next episode is a warning. Until then.
So who did she call after he left and tell to keep an eye on him? I'm thinking Rei. I'd better watch that ep again and see if I can see a phone in her place. According to the closed captioning (which I believe are taken from the Platinum versions), they're random guard people. Doesn't really matter, as this issue is dropped next episode.
Shinji doesn't know anything about Eva? He was reading that manual in the first episode, wasn't he? I guess he was busy then, but he has had time to read it since. Eva Driving wasn't in the manual.
What country is that guy from with whom Gendo is talking? And they'll be involved starting with Unit 08? Just how big a fleet of Evas does NERV contemplate having? I believe it's Germany.
When Dr. Akagi mentions Second Impact, notice the Captain's reaction. As I understand things, this is foreshadowing. You won't have to wait long to find out.

What country is that guy from with whom Gendo is talking? And they'll be involved starting with Unit 08? Just how big a fleet of Evas does NERV contemplate having? 1. Misato called the NERV secret service to tell them it's shift-changing time. That it's now their responsibility to watch him.
Remember that time when Shinji ran away? Technically it was impossible, as he would be brought back within the hour by the SS... You will find out why it took so long for him to get caught in the filler episode.
According to the closed captioning (which I believe are taken from the Platinum versions), they're random guard people. Doesn't really matter, as this issue is dropped next episode. The issue is brought back in the filler recap, when you see the "Shinji ran away" saga from Misato's perspective.
Anyway, Shinji is on round-the-clock surveillance. It's only natural for that to happen, and it's only natural they won't tell him.
2. The manual in ep 1 has NOTHING on Evangelions, as Ritsuko said clearly. That manual is a pre-censored booklet for visitors.
3. They don't say it anywhere in the show, but that guy Gendo talked to is the Russian/China/rest of Asia representative. The more the merrier, ain't it?:D
I believe it's Germany. That's obviously incorrect, as the next episode will prove.
***********
EDIT:
Acts of man are better than acts of God? That don't sound right to me, but it wouldn't. Let's see people make a blade of grass. I pressume God makes you breakfast every morning then? And help you put your socks on? And wash the dishes for you?
You are putting Misato's quote out of context; If you want something done for your own sake, you have to do it yourself. No point praying for it if you are just going to sit there and do nothing.
