View Full Version : Things you'll never understand?

The following things I will Never Understand the Appeal Of, as I have failed to understand them since I first saw or heard of them. And in case you're not picking up on the title's cue, this is where you mention what YOU will never understand the appeal of as well. But you can comment on others' too, naturally.
FORENSIC SCIENCE PROGRAMS
The only way I can explain the appeal of these is this way: when I was a kid, I hated gross unnecessary gore, and slimy blood and guts in my face. It made me want to puke. Everybody else in my entire school, however, couldn't get enough of that stuff and I could never figure out why. Now everybody else has grown up, and they're still demanding the same thing, so they watch all the forensic science they can take, and it gets high ratings.
A forensic program is not the least bit watchable if guts are not your "thing." In most cases they not only show the whole mangled corpse, but zoom into it via CGI. Ick! Why would anyone watch this stuff? Un....pleasant....
THOSE OLD-FASHIONED GIRLY NOVELS
Sarah Plain and Tall, Jane Austen's books, and the American Girls Series have all been adapted and re-adapted into more television and theatrical versions than I can count, and as far as I can tell they are NOTHING but a bunch of stuffy ladies standing around in frilly olde-style dresses, fanning themselves with big equally-frilly fans and discussing boring events. What do women see in this ^%$#?? There is nothing in these things that even remotely takes the form of entertainment. If they like Jane Austen, they should LOVE the phone book!
More things to come.....

How the hell Douglas Adams came up with the number 42 being related to the meaining of life
Martianinvader, I could kiss you for that!
I'm in the same boat with CSI and other forensic stuff. Honestly, what on earth is the appeal of that stuff? =/ It doesn't help that the characters come off as highly unlikeable, well... to me, at least.
I also don't get "Lost" at all. I've tried watching it a couple of times and I still walk away with strong feelings of apathy, confusion and the frustration that I wasted an hour of my life when I should have been doing something productive instead.
Also, I don't get the appeal of flip flops. Those things hurt my big (read: size 12) feet like the dickens! ;_;

I don't appreciate you considering us men "dense" on account of the simple reason you claim to not understand us. That's just very ignorant. Any woman who claims that men are dense just because she doesn't understand them might as well be the one who's dense. I don't quite understand women myself sometimes, but I could never hold that against them. I don't expect any male (including myself) to ever understand women to the fullest, or vice-versa. Any male who claims to understand women to the fullest is either a liar or delusional.
Since I've accepted I'll never fully understand women, I still highly appreciate it when a female friend or a girlfriend is at least willing to HELP me understand her as much as I possibly can. I especially appreicate it when she's not doing it a condescending manner, and also being patient about it (even though I personally don't think I'm so hard to deal with). So if she's patient with me, I'll be more inclined to be patient with her idiosyncrasies, and in return, I'll also help her understand me along the way. It's only fair, yes? She scratches my back, and I'll scratch hers.

I'll side with Mek on Lost, for the same reasons as her.
And, though I've still got much love for it, I cannot understand how wrestling is popular. When you get down to it, it's just a couple of men groping each other.
While on the subject of dumb sports, I must mention Racing. The cars go round and round and round and round... Am I missing something, or is that it?! I just can't understand it at all.
men "dense" on account of the simple reason you claim to not understand us.Perhaps she was referring to something different, but I believe it's harder to understand you men because of your density. Men are dense. =P They're all a bunch of oblivious fools. If they're not, they sure put on a good act. Thus adding confusion. Please note, I'm not saying women are not fools or that all men are. I've got many more problems with women than men, actually.

I've got many more problems with women than men, actually. Now you're just contradicting yourself. First you say men are oblivous fools, and then you go and say that women aren't perfect either. So what if there are things we don't understand? That's still no cause for the hostility. Plus after all the things you said (especially "They're [men] all a bunch of oblivous fools.") it no longer matters that you claim to have more problems with men than women. It also undercuts your statement of "Please note, I'm not saying women are not fools." Also, what's so bad about helping us understand things that we might not undersatnd (about women)? I mean, really. One wrong move, and you all throw up your arms in disgust and resort to name calling and what not. So you're no better than even the most dense man. Now if you can't even grasp THAT concept, then I pity you.

Yeah because emoticons can only say so much.
I'm probably being considered dense just for simply overlooking the emoticon. Anyway I just have hang-ups about having my intellect attacked just because something goes over my head. For Christ's sake, nobody's perfect. I also don't believe in attacking an entire group on account of the negative actions of one or a few from that group. I also have ZERO tolerance for prejudice and ignorance.

Yes it DOES work both ways. I should know. I've been accused of being too serious about girls in the exact same way. That's why I could never look down upon a female just because she may not understand something about me. Also, this is probably not even a wise idea, but has it ever occured to you to even ASK the guy about what he says, if you think there could be more to what he's telling you?
Didn't mean to make you upset anyways, I didn't mean to say anything offensive.

Why I haven't changed my username yet.
No, seriously.
Nevertheless, I don't understand... art. I mean, I get art, but everyone has their own perception of art. Graffiti, some may call it art. Some may call it graphic design. Others may call it wrong. Just like animation. Some call it art, some call it "kids' stuff," and others may call it... well, it might not interest them.
Why television sucks nowadays. It's not that hard to hire people with degrees and visions for how good television could be. There are hundreds of thousands of people in the industry, and at least one-eighth of them must have good ideas. Was it really that hard for Turner to look for someone other than Jim Samples to take care of Cartoon Network? After all, all he did was work on the network's website.
Why a number of the good shows aren't released on DVD. The studios just don't realize what revenue a show like Dexter's Laboratory could rake in... put it out there, and a number of people will buy it. I guarantee you, it'd sell better than Samurai Jack.
Why people who have debt and have money can't pay it off. Always get your deals on paper, folks.

More things to come.....I usually look from side to side before I say this, but I have to admit that I absolutely love Jane Austen...and I'm a guy. She's one of my favorite novelist of all time, and I think she was a really good social commentator. She wrote the inter personal relationships between her charecters so well, that often times I cared for their well being more than I did in some "dramatic" stories, even though she often wrote more satirical. She also was really good at painting an image of her times with just her words.
Anyway things I don't understand.
-Why people get hung up over others dating/marrying outside of their race.
We're all people.
-Student/Faculty parking: I can't tell you how many times I (and others with me) circled around my college parking lot looking for a parking space, when the faculty parking had plenty of spots open.
-Why some people don't want to talk about relationship problems, when it's the best thing to do (had this happen to me recently).
-Why the media only seems to go into extensive coverage of natural disasters when they happen in 1st world nations (with the exception of the Tsunami).
I could probably think of more later.

Depressed people: I just don't get it. I know this may sound insensitive (and I realise that it is) but I don't know why people simply don't choose to stop wallowing in ther unfounded misery.
Yes there are people who do deserve to be depressed. These people have horrid home-lives, are abused, mentally, physically, emotionally or sexualy by others close to them. Compared to these kind of problems, the people I see on a usual basis who are knee deep in self pity are none of these, but beleive themselves to be for one reason or another.
And then what do they do?! They listen to depressing/angry music. They read sad depressing books, the watch depressing movies, they carry depressive looks (heh, that sounds Seussian ^__^ )
and I just want to grab and shake them and shout " STOP FEELING SO BAD FOR YOURSELF. YOU'RE NOT A BAD PERSON. GET HAPPY!"
(Disclaimer: this post is not directed toward ANYONE at TZ, I have many friends that act this way as well and this is a general observation on my part, do not take it personally. Unless you wanna "get happy", then by all means, take that personally and be happy)

On the understanding men and women thing it really isn't that complicated. What most people forget is that EVERY SINGLE MAN AND WOMAN ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH IS DIFFERENT FROM EACH OTHER. Some men are clueless, some are classy, some are manipulative, some are pigs. some are sweet, some are funny, and some are them are all of those things at the same time. Personality varies from person to person and the same thing goes for women as well. I know a bunch of women who aren't complicated emo-machines and I have a feeling some women ARE they way because they are treated that way. Same thing with clueless guys. It is true that our experiences color the way we see people. But we have to acknowledge that our experiences do not define every single person on the face of the earth and are more likely than not are limited at best.
Want to understand women? Talk to them. Want to understand men? Ask them. It's not as complicated as people would have you think.
I'm moving the things I don't understand over to my blog because most of them are too depressing.

I'll never understand why some atheists want to remove "under God" from the pledge. I am an atheist myself and could not possibly care less. And you can keep the manger scenes, too. Unless it's a hurricane, in which Baby Jesus could get loose and really do some damage.
I'll also never understand the appeal of Crazy Frog and why anybody would want a singing Meow Mix clock in their house.
And I also don't get the ending to Wolf's Rain and the movies Overdrawn at the Memory Bank and Laserblast. I have no idea what the vast majority of Yes songs are about, or why anyone would name a character 'Zap Rowsdower'.

While on the subject of dumb sports, I must mention Racing. The cars go round and round and round and round... Am I missing something, or is that it?! I just can't understand it at all. I enjoy rally racing. That's totally cool. But as for Nascar (and I'm taking my life in my hands criticizing it down here!), it bores the teeth right outta my head. It's nothing but left turns (or is it right?). I'm totally for the technology that comes about for consumer vehicles because of it. But for sports, I'd rather watch professional knitting.
On behalf of all men everywhere. Please, don't "get" us. Just "have" us. I can't refuse. Consider this request granted.
Depressed people: I just don't get it. I know this may sound insensitive (and I realise that it is) but I don't know why people simply don't choose to stop wallowing in ther unfounded misery. Though I'm cutting the rest of your post out of this quote for brevity, I do know that you've got an idea about the answer to your own question.
But you do have to realize that some people find a bizarre comfort in allowing their own self-pity and depression. It is or it becomes where they are used to being and feeling, and the idea of being happy or satisified (or whatever the specifics of each particular instance) is as foreign to them as subjecting yourself to unending misery is to you.
Make sense? No. But when have emotions made total sense?

THOSE OLD-FASHIONED GIRLY NOVELS
::GASP:: I liked Jane Eyre. Actually, I got worked up over it (I had to have my professor point that out to me), so I appreciate the fact that a work of fiction can get such a response out of me (although granted, I'm not exactly a stone when it comes to some things).
Sports I don't get - Nascar, Tennis, Volleyball, and Golf. I get people who like playing them, but why watch them?
As far as men and women, I agree with what Fone said. It's just easier to find a specific trait you don't like in members of the opposite sex and then feel that you don't get them. Personally, I don't get homosexual males (homosexual females, I understand). I'm not saying I'm against homosexuality or anything, but seriously, women are hot! How any man can reject every single woman on Earth is beyond me.
Oh, and who's with me on not getting the slowing down/stopping to look at an accident thing? I mean, okay, SOMETIMES I do like to see the rear of a car smashed up, that's kinda cool, but I can't look at anyone who is hurt...why does that fascinate people?!

I don't understand "the left" either....
and while I'm at it....
I don't understand "the right" either.... :p
Now, going back to the whole men are dense thing. I think some of us appear dense merely because men often don't get so deeply involved (especially emotionally) in what's going on around them. The office in which I work is a perfect example. It's mostly women in the entire building (in fact it's all women except for me in my department). Every so often we'll have staff meetings and the manager will talk about how we have to work out various issues that are going on among the employees. The funny part is that every time something like this comes up I always sit there and think, "There are issues going on among the employees?" I just work data entry, so every day I go in, sit down in my cubicle, put on my headphones and totally zone out everything around me. I couldn't care less about the soap operas that are office politics. Not to sound snobby or anything, but I feel I have more important things to focus my mind on. I leave the office behind every day at 4:30 and don't think about it again until I arrive a 8:00 the next morning. Meanwhile, the ladies of the office go through a complicated daily routine of love/hate relationships, gossip, backstabbing, etc etc etc... It makes me glad I'm male sometimes.
For the record though, I don't really understand women either. I think that's just how it's meant to be. lol

Why if I don't show the exact right work in math but wind up with the right answer I get in trouble for it.
I don't understand the lyrics in Rhapsody or Luca Turili and why my brother loves them so much. Sure, they have awesome beats but the songs make no sense at all. They ramble on about snow kings and dragons and the flaming rain.
And why everybody seems to think baseball is the easiest of the major sports. I've got some news for you, it isn't. I've played football, hockey, tennis, basketball, and volleyball, and all are easier then baseball. When you can hit a slider, then you can tell me baseball is easy. Oh, and the pressure in baseball is much greater then in other sports. Having to catch a pass is easier then coming up to bat with the basses loaded with two outs and the game on the line. And when the pitcher throws a junk pitch, it sucks to be the batter.

Jane Austin: I'm w/ Martian Invader on this one. I do like women writers (i.e. Dickenson, the Bronte sisters), but why people consider Austin the ultimate women writer is beyond me. There are female writers before her who made more daring social commentaries (i.e. Wollstonecraft), but Austin gets the prize. Her social commentaries are sooooooooo watered down. Take Pride and Prejudice for an example: Elizabeth says she'll marry who she wants to marry, regardless of his class or money. So she marries Mr. Darcy, who's rich and from the upper class. What's the point of making that statement when she marries off well, like all the other women? And I swear, Elizabeth came off as such a knucklehead to me. She sits around all day at home and gets giddy over parties. Wow, what a trailblazer.
reality T.V.: Why are people so fascinated w/ watching the lowest of society cheat, backstab, and betray one another? This behavior shouldn't be glorified.
Friends: When I can see the joke coming from miles away, it ain't funny.
Desperate Housewives: O.K., if you're from the nice suburbs, and you are bored, then get an education and get a damn job!!!!!!!!!!! Do not plague me w/ your drama!
chick flicks: Jokes aren't funny, women need to stop w/ their poor me self obsession, male characters are poorly written, sexist against males...
getting drunk: When I hang out w/ my friends, I want to remember clearly and fondly the good times I had w/ them. I don't want to wake up in a stupor, wondering what the hell happened the night before, w/ the world's worst headache.
getting stoned: Similar to above, minus the hangover.

I'm with all those who have pointed out "getting drunk." Though I think I've gathered the general point: ignorance is still bliss. When you're drunk, you're stupid, and being stupid feeeeeels gooooood......

"Greatest Band of All Time"? How? I saw Paul McCartney's halftime show and spent most of it bored. I just can't get into their music or see why it has remained so popular for 40 years. All their songs are weird. How does writing something as nonsensical as "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" make you impossible to top? Of course, I've never been into any sixties music at all, so that might explain it.
I just shrug and say, "whatever." After all, there are certainly worse bands that could be considered "best of all time."

Jane Austen novels bear the most commentary-laden fruit if you learn about the basic structure of British society at that time along with its social mores, especially with regards to the role of women. Her commentary is subtle, in service of her stories and not the other way around.

Why do people don't type the way they were meant to? Sure, there's the gripe that "my school didn't teach that to me when I was there," but a good sum of us have had or have the chance to learn typewriting. I had the chance in elementary school and let it pass me by, and then came back in middle school and took the course seriously. Sure, my skills have degraded since then, but I'm still very able. No offense to anyone, but pecking on a keyboard is... very archaic.

About 5,000,000,000 years ago, An alien species who remarkably look like he founders saw our galaxy as being empty. It was unanomously decided that the galaxy would be seeded and the aliens planted life forms on the planets. These life forms werent life forms as we know it. They were protein chains and organic molecules. These organic molecules then evolved into the humanoid life forms we all know and love. You know, the Cardassians, Klingons, Romulans, Jem'Hadar, and Borg.

It's just as easy to type out, "That was hilarious," or "My Life as a Teenage Robot."Just as easy? 6 letters comparred to 21 letters and 5 spaces. That's a 77% reduction in typing energy. I type A LOT, and my fingers hurt because of it. Any way I find to reduce the strain, I take. This does not, however, excuse the people who throw in a "lol" every seven words. This is annoying. Do these people actually laugh that much in real life?

Let me try to answer some of your questions.
Also what's with the plastic thingy I have to put when microwaving my pizza? I don't get why I have to put it there.
If you're talking about the small plastic stool thing that comes with delivered pizza, I think this is to prevent the cheese and topping from sliding off the pizza during the delivery.
Why can't God be a woman?
What, haven't seen Dogma?
Why do some comic book creators never finish certain comics?(Example Battle Chasers and Out There)

Professional wrestling fans: I just can't see the attraction.

Why all aliens in Star Trek seem humanoid.
Budget constraints (and wasn't there an Enterprise ep that explained how Worf's people "evolved", i.e., the differences between the original, TNG, and Enterprise series looks?)
ETA: Three animation related things I don't understand:
1. Why 4Kids has been giving Winx the One Piece treatment. They rearrange scenes and sometimes re-script scenes into a completely different meaning. Sure they don't cut whole eps out, but 4Kids still makes Winx an inferior product to the original.
2. I asked this in the Nicktoons forum a while ago, but it still haunts me: Hey Arnold!: Arnold is not okay with Dino Spumoni's refusal to apologize to his songwriter, but is okay with Stinky's refusal to sign an ad contract, even though their reasoning is just about the same ("Sure I'll be poor and penniless but I'll still have my pride"). It'd be nice to get a better reason than "Status quo is god".
3. What the heck was Doug Langdale thinking when he decided to make The Weekenders episode-title less? Virtually every other (daytime) cartoon at the time had ep titles onscreen. These days, titlelessness is a majority now.

These days, titlelessness is a majority now.I've never heard of The Weekenders, but I've always viewed cartoons that don't display their titles to be "more professional" or "more grown-up." If you don't see a title, you have to figure out the point of the episode yourself. Also, perhaps it's a way to keep people watching longer. If they see the title, they will know if they've seen it before or if it's new to them. Without a title, a viewer has to work harder and watch longer (especially a younger one) to verify it's a rerun before changing the channel.

Being "cool" - why is it that in high school if i want to get along with people i have to be "cool" ? what exactly does being "cool" mean anyways?
50 cent (and similar rappers) - whats the big deal with him? what is so appealing about some guy talking really fast about being shot, taking drugs, killing people, disrespecting women and being a thug? i fail to see the attraction in that
teenage girls -why do most (not all) teenage girls feel like they have to be sluts? wearing their skirts so high they could be belts, with the make-up plastered on their faces so thick, youd need dynamite to take it off, stuffing their bras with way too much toilet roll and drowning themselfs in their mums best expensive perfume, whats the big rush to grow up? ive seen kids as young as 8 wearing make up on regular occasions. im almost 17 and i never wear make-up, i dont see the need.
maths - ive always had trouble with maths, probably always will, although i am improving, but maths still confuses me greatly
theres more stuff i dont understand but i cant think of any more.

Why the internet is practically crawling with Linkin Park fans.
Hey what's wrong with Linkin Park or their fans?
I don't get why all the really good shows on tv get canceled or the series ends and they don't get constant reruns like all the bad shows do. Then these forever shown reruns never have new episodes to air or the series is done and they just keep starting the crap over from beginning to end. Its taking up time slots that could be filled with new programs and better ones. I just don't get the whole network/television station thing in general. I think the way things are being run really suck.

Anniemaniac182, I don't think some girls can help the way they dress. Have you seen what designers are making these days? It's a wonder the whole world hasn't been sexually abused yet. But yeah, I agree. I don't get why girls that naturally act sluty act that way.
I think the thing I'll never get is how people can go around calling you this and that and you know they're doing it. You can quote them! When you bring it up they deny it to the hills. I just don't understand.

Men. :)
Honestly, you members of the opposite sex are extremely confusing. Or dense, I'm not really sure. :p But I just don't get "men." :sweat:That's exactly what most MEN think about WOMEN.
But not me. I find both of them confusing, and extremely obnoxious. Especially the ones who gripe about the opposite sex being hard to understand. What's to understand? Average men are childish, average women are selfish.
But only about 40% of people fall into gender stereotypes.
How randomguy can use the word kutzpah,
and expect everyone to understand what that means. Mel Brooks uses that word in a film Blazing Saddles. Is that where randomguy got it?
Stuart, very little
kutzpah.

I don't understand why poking myself with sharp things makes blood come out.
On a more serious note:
-Why I always lose my chapstick. I don't think I've ever gotten to finish a tube.
-How it can be too cold for snow.
-How people can not like the rain or the wind or any of nature that feels so pure.
-How people can like to keep fish as pets.
-Why tea doesn't come in little packets like Capri Sun.

Why TV Guide Channel has made the TV display screen smaller in order to focus on their original programming. NOBODY watches TV Guide for the original programming.

NOBODY watches TV Guide for the original programming.I rather like the "Seeing Stars" stuff. And they had a fun documentary on Wheel of Fortune a few weeks ago. I am getting sick of seeing Ken Taylor dress up for Enterprise though. It's been playing off and on for years now.
-Why tea doesn't come in little packets like Capri Sun.Actually, Capri Sun does make Iced Tea.

Does that creep you out, too? When I was 12, I used to have guppies and tetras but when we were moving, they got left outside and froze (it was around this time of year). The only reason I felt bad, though, was because I wasn't too attached to them.
Fish just aren't mutual pets, you know?
Another thing I don't understand:
Why my college re-opens after a long break on Monday at noon instead of Sunday (when, you know, people are actually off and not working). It's friggin annoying.
I'm in the same boat with CSI and other forensic stuff. Honestly, what on earth is the appeal of that stuff? =/ It doesn't help that the characters come off as highly unlikeable, well... to me, at least.Hence why I watch NCIS instead. ;)
