View Full Version : Does anyone smoke?

...or not so you can stay healthy for the rest of your life. I'll tell you something: there is a high popularity of smokers at my school and I just can't stand it...

In my former highschool we had a smokers corner by one of the exit doors so most of it drifted outside or they did it in bathrooms. I personally have no problem with it but I don't think its right for people to smoke wherever they feel like someone around them might have asthma or allergies and who wants all that second hand smoke. if they wanna share their bad air they should share it with other smokers in a secluded area.

My school seems a lot worse. They have a smoker's corner outside of the school and when I'm in the restrooms and outside, it feels like I'm on the boardwalk...

Never smoked in my life. In my former highschool, I once went into a music hallway and ended up in a corridor full of fog/smog/smoke. I could not see the hand in front of my face and no I am not exadurationg. It was that bad, and that was not sigarette smoke it was weed, Ihe smell was burned into my nostrils. It was horrible.

Reminds me of Archie Bunker...

There is a kid I've known since junior high school who has been smoking for a few years. Even when he leaves the room to go to the rr (which he does all the time and more than twice a day), you know what he's doing! Smoking! I can't even sit near him since his breath reaks to high heaven and he is just not the way he once was... I can't stand the man!

I personally think this is one of mankinds greatest evils. I'm also sick of the government covering the cig packets in health warnings which bluntly claim you are gonna die if you use these. Not only that, but it affects those around you so why don't they just ban the damn things already? Or at least prohibit where they can be used. I hate having to breathe used smoke at bus shelters and college walkways. It's disgusting.

I used to smoke quite a bit, so prepare for a small amount of ranting.

I personally think this is one of mankinds greatest evils.
Instead of nuclear weapons, acid rain, war, genocide, or napalm? There are a ton of things that are worse than cigarettes.

I'm also sick of the government covering the cig packets in health warnings which bluntly claim you are gonna die if you use these.
It's the smoker's damn choice. You'd rather people go uninformed?

Not only that, but it affects those around you so why don't they just ban the damn things already?QUOTE]

By the same logic, cars and electricity can kill people around you. Why not ban those, too. Besides, cigarettes are made as stress relievers. They aren't made for destroying lungs.

[QUOTE] Or at least prohibit where they can be used. I hate having to breathe used smoke at bus shelters and college walkways.
This I agree with.

Phew, end rant. I guess vomiting makes me irritable.

I have never smoked either, and I don't plan on it. The smell is horrible. I sometimes see people with the cigs, and they aren't nice at all. Cigs seem to make people mean. The person that said" I couldn't see my hand in front of my face" I have one word.... WOW:eek: . You see, that is going over board. There must have been half the school smoking to make that happen.

The only good smoker is a dead smoker!

I don't smoke, but not because I think I will live longer (what a dreaded thought!) but because it literally makes me physically ill to smell the stuff. And I've never had an urge. Stress reliever? That's just an excuse, I think. What did you do to relieve stress before you smoked? Why did you decide to smoke? No doubt, it does relieve stress, but there are better stress relievers in the world. For me, making music is a great stress reliever. Simply doing something you enjoy could relieve stress. You don't have to slowly kill yourself to relax.

And it may not be one of the greatest evils, but how many people have died from it in the last year? Now how many people have died from nuclear weapons, acid rain, war, genocide, or napalm? (I honestly do not know! This is not a rehetorical question! I would actually like to see the numbers!)

I enjoy the smell of cigarette smoke and believe I would really enjoy smoking if I gave it a try. However, I don't because my lungs are already compromised by a couple of pre-existing health conditions, and smoking for me would be pretty suicidal.

Nope, I've never smoked -- never even had a puff. I have no idea what cigarettes even taste like.

You know, smoking is something that, for some reason, never even remotely tempted me. And it's also something that I never got the slightest bit of peer pressure to do either.

... Oddly enough, though, I have once or twice had a dream in which I was a smoker.

I hate the stuff. I'm lucky that none of my friends are into it too much either, and they make everyone smoke outside at work. It's just pubs and clubs were it gets me, if you're in a small club, there's often enough smoke in there to make your eyes water (and your clothes stink)

And a note to you ladies, smoking doesn't make you more desirable. In fact, when you do kiss a girl who smokes, it's pretty disgusting. Takes a while (and a shot or two ;) ) to get the taste out of your mouth.

One of the main people who I know that smokes frequently blows it in my face when I see him. If anyone ever does this to you, I recommend a quick knee to the conkers. Worked like a charm! :zim:

On a side note, I think that for most of the people here, if given the choice between paying for cigarettes, or something that's actually fun, most people would rather not send their limited money up in smoke.

Can't stand them. Though I've never actually tried a cigarette, I've had plenty of smoker friends and spent much of my youth in Austin's many smoky music venues and blues clubs. There are plenty of nights where I've come home from an evening show with my clothes reeking of cigarette smoke, and periodically the stench would jump to other clothes in my closet. It's like the B.O. smell in that one episode of Seinfeld.

Though I can tolerate it in some instances, I've been exposed to enough smoke in my life to know it's not something I'd want to do. That, and the health risks are so substantial and so stupifyingly obvious that it's hard to imagine anyone thinking the habit is actually worth the trouble. It's also mighty expensive.

I will confess, however, that I enjoy a cigar here and there, and have for a few years now. While those aren't inhaled, they're still not entirely healthy, which is why I try to limit them to only a few a year, generally for special events and holidays.

And a note to you ladies, smoking doesn't make you more desirable. In fact, when you do kiss a girl who smokes, it's pretty disgusting. Takes a while (and a shot or two ;) ) to get the taste out of your mouth. I cannot stress this enough. There are very few things in this world that will make me lose interest in a girl faster than the knowledge that she smokes. I know this to be true for a great many guys. Although I can't speak for the ladies, I'd imagine the inverse is also true.

So that's another compelling reason to avoid the habit. Unless you're specifically pursuing a smoker, your chances with the opposite sex (or same... whatever) are probably better without having a cigarette habit.

I was pretty well turned away from smoking by my aunt's leathery, wrinkled skin and ever-present cigarette odour. The health risks didn't incline me well toward it either. Besides that, I prefer to not put myself in a situation wherein I could be a sort of public nuisance by filling locations with unpleasant gasses, beyond this which we of Pennsylvania German descent cannot help but emit.

Besides that, buying cigarettes would be rather costly with any sort of smoking habit, and I'd much rather spend that money on things that won't turn my lungs in blackened husks, ravage my skin, and make me smell like a cheap nightclub.

Sometimes I wonder what it might be like, but I prefer not to take such risks in the name of idle, half-interested curiousity. I could imagine myself smoking a long, eccentric churchwarden's pipe with some odd blend in the cup, but I don't mark even that as very likely.

Smoking's just not my thing. After seeing how it took my dad over 20 years to finally quit, the countless number of ads on TV saying how this stuff kills, and how I seen it affect smokers, I don't think I'll be trying the stuff.

I also don't care much for the smell of it. It also doesn't help that there's tons of people who smoke at my college and I have to put up with the smell almost every day. I can tolerate the smell in small doses, but I wouldn't want to put up with the smell in heavy amounts.

I also don't want my lungs damaged (causing breathing problems), nor would I want to go around smelling like cigarettes.

Nope, don't think I'll try smoking.

Like Style, I too actually don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke. I used to have trouble breathing around someone who was smoking, but I've "acquired the taste," so to speak. Only two of my friends smoke, and they don't do it often, nor do they ever do it inside. My best friend used to, but quit recently. Another friend has parents who smoke, but he never picked up the habbit. I've wanted to try smoking a cigarette, just once to see what it feels like, but I'm too afraid of choking.

I never have smoked and I never will smoke. But if one of my friends smokes I'll lay off because they're my friends and they're entitled to do what they want. If they offer me a bud I decline and when they smoke I keep myself a good distance away so that I don't inhale the fumes.

I hate cigarette smoke and have never smoked anything in my life.

But do you know what's worse than smoking? Holier-than-thou non-smokers who won't just mind their own buisiness.

Smoking makes some people feel good, and if they'd rather live a short life smoking than grow old, I think it's an utterly respectable choice. Smoking is only wrong if it seriously hurts someone else, and most smokers I've known did not smoke around their loved ones.

We ALL destroy ourselves. It's called living. "Health" is just fancy talk for dying a little slower.

I don't totally agree with that. If people want to smoke, that's fine, but not around folks that cannot stand the smoke.

I don't know, Scythe, I'd rather die as an old man peacefully than die as a young man with a life-threatening disease or numerous health problems. I never got to meet my maternal grandfather, because emphysema killed him (and yes, he smoked). My maternal grandmother died last week, and she was a smoker for many years (smoking really did significant damage to her health).

We ALL destroy ourselves. It's called living. "Health" is just fancy talk for dying a little slower.
Sure, we'll all die someday. That doesn't mean one should shorten his/her lifespan -- or shorten other people's lifespans (from the second-hand smoke).

Cigs? Once in a rare while, and only if they're freely offered-- I wouldn't pay money for them. They're over too quickly, they taste all chemical-y (unless they're handrolled), and they're at best a poor substitute for...

CIGARS. I don't smoke often, but when I do, I want to SMOKE. I want to really stink up the place. I want to spend a good forty-five minutes or so at it, I don't mind spending upwards of twenty bucks for the privilege, and when I'm done, I want to reek of it for WEEKS.

But like I said, it's a rare indulgence, best saved for wedding receptions (or better yet, bachelor parties), graduations, post-childbirth celebrations, and the like.

I think what turned me completely off from the idea of smoking when I was a kid is when my mom would put her cigarettes out in a glass of water. She'd put them out in there all the time, and not clean the glass until it had a lot of cigarette butts in there. The smell of it was horrible enough, but one time I bumped the table one of these glasses were sitting on and the glass fell over and the smell was even worse. The most disgusting thing EVER.

I refuse to clean up after smokers too. If, at work, I am ever given the duty of emptying the outside trash, you're supposed to clean the ash tray too, but I refues to do so. Let a smoker go out there and clean that crap up.

The only good smoker is a dead smoker! That's uncool, Calhoun. Reading your experiences and feelings, I understand your anti-smoking stance. I agree with it, infact. But saying that is awful.

There are a lot of good people who smoke for one reason or another. Yeah, it's a horrible habit and dependency. No question. But taht doesn't mean the person with the dependency ought to die. I'd rather support them as they try to quit when they want to.

Does anyone smoke?...or not so you can stay healthy for the rest of your life. This is an inaccurate statement to put forward. Never smoking will obviously decrease your chances of getting smoking-related illnesses (terminal included).

But stay healthy forever? Naw. Eat fast-food and/or processed foods more than once a week? How about potato chips or donuts? Most of the foods in the average americans diet contributes to obesity-related illnesses. Not to mention those born with tendencies towards cancers and other diseases which are passed on genetically.

I don't and never will smoke. My mom and dad both do it and it is the reason why I have trouble breathing ^_^; I was never born with ashama....but for some reason I have it...got it at the age of 9, so it could have been caused by second hand smoke, I'm not sure. I do know that it's a horrible habit and it just disgusts me.

Granted this is the first thread of this kind that I've read that someone wishes I was dead because I smoke, but I suppose some hate comes with the territory. I'll just roll with the punches until then.

Hostility towards smokers is ridiculous. It's like complaining at a truck driver when you're stuck behind his fumes-spewing flatbed on the road. A lot of smokers I've met, and all of the smokers who are friends of mine, have the decency to smoke outside, either because they don't want to make the non-smokers in the room uncomfortable, or they don't want to smell up the place they're doing it in. (Or because there's a non-smoking sign around of course.) Maybe you've met a smoker who would not honor your wishes to either snuff the cig or take it outside. Those people are being rude and you have a right to be angry at them, as you would the right to be angry at a mother who brings a baby to a movie theater. (Truthfully, I'd be angrier at the mother.)

I've tried talking to my smoking friends about quitting, and they have refused. I now accept it and tollerate it, and as I mentioned before have gotten used to it so it doesn't bother me. My best friend told me several times "I can quit whenever I want. This is just to get rid of stress." I hate to say I didn't believe him, but he proved his words a year ago when he up and quit for good.

Just because you smoke doesn't mean you're a bad person. Do I think my friends are killing me with second-hand smoke? No, because they're not chain smokers and when they do smoke, it's outside. Besides, if I die earlier than I should it'll be because of either my severe underweight problem or the fact that I don't bother to work out and strengthen my string bean muscles and my body would just collapse into itself. If I die, it'll be my own damn fault, not some smoker's.

You don't just suddenly and peacefully die because you're "old". You die because you develop cancer (with or without smoking) or one of your vital organs craps out.

How many people here know that when you die in your sleep at an old age, it's because a nightmare has stopped your heart?
