The Mozilla Suite has a browser, HTML editor, and email client, while Firefox is simply a webrowser.

There's a difference between the Mozilla Explorer and the Mozilla Firefox Explorer?Drop the Explorer, it is Internet EXPLORER, but just Mozilla (Suite), and Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser).
When Netscape went open source, the Mozilla Suite was created, with was just a copy of Netscape Navigator with a new name. Mozilla went on to follow the 'Swiss-army knife' approach as they called it, trying to include everything you could possible need, web browsing, email, irc, and a few other things you haven't heard off.
Problem was that this was slow, and most of the features weren't being used. So they took the core web browsing component, Gecko, slapped on a new GUI, and called it Phoenix. Then Firebird. Then finally Firefox.
Short version, Mozilla Firefox is a sleeker, slimmer, and all round faster version of Mozilla.

I like the Mozilla Suite browser (Navigator) because it has a plug-ins list and a better download manager than Firefox.
Although about all I use in the Mozilla Suite are the browser and the IRC client.
As for Firefox being faster, I haven't really noticed a difference.

It stores its cookies and cache directly in RAM for easy access and that way it does not polute your HDD with cache files as IE does. Plus the new Firefox completely killed off a web browser Neoplanet, and gives Ad loaded Opera and super heavy Netscape a run for their money. Its more stable, more secure, less pop-ups, less security threats, completely costomizable and is 5.XXMb instead of 20.XXMb IE browser.
