Disney fans might be happy to hear that the first volumes of Rescue Rangers and DuckTales are coming out on DVD today. Other animated highlights include a Beavis and Butthead volume (edited (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=153614), unfortunately for fans), the epic 21-disc Robotech: Protoculture Collection, and Rock-a-Doodle.
The two biggest recent theatrical releases making their way to DVD are Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, available in 1-disc and 2-disc editions, and -- on the opposite end of the spectrum -- The Devil's Rejects, available as an unrated widescreen DVD and an R-rated full-screen disc. Making their way from a limited theatrical release are Après Vous, Cronicas, and Yes.
Riding Charlie and the Chocolate Factory's marketing push, Tim Burton's Big Fish and Edward Scissorhands are getting special edition re-releases. Same for Jumanji, I guess to cash in on the imminent release of Zathura.
The holiday onslaught continues unabated, seeing the release of Blizzard, Boys Town, the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol, Christmas in Connecticut, The Christmas Wife, and Christmas with the Kranks. Boys Town, A Christmas Carol, and Christmas in Connecticut are also available packaged together in the Warner Bros. Classic Holiday Collection.
Marlon Brando stars in a number of this week's most notable catalog titles -- Burn!, A Dry White Season, The Fugitive Kind, and The Missouri Breaks. Criterion is also adding two movies to their collection: Pickpocket and Ugetsu. Also of note is Diana Ross' Lady Sings the Blues.
The first seasons of Blue Collar TV, A Different World, Five Mile Creek, Tales from Avonlea, and The White Shadow are being issued on DVD this week, along with the complete run of Space: Above and Beyond and the second seasons of The Partridge Family and Remington Steele. Kevin Smith fans should grab Jay and Silent Bob Do Degrassi: The Next Generation (available in both standard and unrated director's cut editions), and other miscellaneous releases include an eighth Mystery Science Theater 3000 collection and Jeopardy: An Inside Look.
There are a few music-themed DVDs to point out this week -- 50 Cent: Refuse to Die, a three-disc set of The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia Live, and Live 8. Depending on how far you're willing to stretch the word "music", Aaron Carter's movie Popstar is coming out too.
For a list of some of the best prices as well as the latest price drops for existing titles, check Mike Frezon's weekly thread on the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=245321) and SalesCircular.com (http://www.salescircular.com/). A relatively comprehensive list of this week's releases can be found at DVD Talk (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bargain.php) and ComingSoon.net (http://www.comingsoon.net/dvd/).
So -- what are you getting this week? I need to get the new MST3K set and maybe Jay and Silent Bob Do Degrassi, but I might hold off until Deep Discount DVD does their traditional holiday sale later in the month.
