Looks like not every developer thinks highly of the Revolution. D:

*ducks head in preparation for the upcoming reactionary fan onslaught*

While he comes off a bit harsh, I can't say I don't agree with him on some parts, at least.

Well I still plan to buy a revolution

I got about a bit over 20 games for the GC currently, with a few more that have my intrest when the price drops on them or there is a sale.

I figure the Revolution's selection of games at least would equal the Gamecube in terms of good games of certain genres.

It's more of an attack at third party developers, but it's not far off base -- the large portion of non-gimmick games for the DS are from Nintendo themselves.. most third party developers find a cheap/quick way to utilize the second screen because they just don't give a damn and don't like being forced to jump through hurdles. It will be the same for the Revolution.

most third party developers find a cheap/quick way to utilize the second screen because they just don't give a damn and don't like being forced to jump through hurdles. It will be the same for the Revolution. On one hand, I can sympathize with developers who have a limited time to develop a product. I can understand how you see Nintendo as being unnecessarily gimmicky and stubborn, but it's hard for me to slam Nintendo for forcing the games industry to be innovative - if the DS is such a pain to make games for, why not stick with the GBA? Furthermore, if we are to take gaming seriously as an art, shouldn't we be encouraging developers to create unique games using the DS' touch screen, instead of framing it as "jumping through hurdles"? I mean, think of how few crappy, potboiler movie tie-in games there'd be. Think about it this way, if it's not too pretentious an example: there's a lot more things to be considered when making a color film with sound, but movie studios aren't necessarily forcing filmmakers to jump through hurdles by making them use that format instead of black and white silent movies. Although you could instead argue the DS is more like 3D movies...

If third party developers hate making games for the DS so much, why aren't there more games for the PSP, which seems to be suffering from a lack of quality games? I hear GTA: Liberty City Stories being panned because it's not suited for handheld gaming (http://toastyfrog.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=5956871&publicUserId=5379721) (scroll down to "liberation"), and many other PSP games for not having much effort put into it.

I think Nintendo actually has an interesting position with the DS and Revolution. Rather than put the focus on technical details and other secondary aspects of gaming, Nintendo seems to be trying to go back to gaming itself, particularly with how the controller will function.

Yeah I remember Matt Wilson saying a long time ago that the DS would be a cheap gimick and fade out soon once the next Game Boy hit the market. Turns out that the DS has a really strong line of games which take advantage of the features. There are less transfered games than PSP, but the remakes are far superior to any remake for the PSP besides GTA:LCS and GITS:SAC. Sure not every single game needs to use the touch screen, but other companies like Konami have been creatitive with this by using a few simple details to their games. Castlevania: DoS barely uses the touch screen, but comes in handy with boss battles and unlocking doors.

So why would the Revolution be any different? Maybe American game designers might be lazy, but an independent or a small company doesn't have the man power like a majority of Europe's or Japan's industries. Like I said before, Capcom, Konami, Sega, or Namco would be all over this and set higher standards for future games.

don't worry, Matt Casamassina was at the IGN Live event when the VP of Epic was bashing the Revolution and I'd have to say, the VP was Nintendowned. Watch the IGN Live event 8 minutes into it to see Matt unleash his fury.
