NFL STAR EDDIE GEORGE NAMED HOST OF “G4’S TRAINING CAMP”
All-New Original Series “G4’s Training Camp”
Premieres November 15 at 11:30 PM ET/PT
LOS ANGELES – October 12, 2005 – After donning the NFL shield as an all-pro running back for ten years, Eddie George trades his uniform for a microphone this season to take on hosting duties for “G4’s Training Camp.” The all-new original series is set to premiere November 15 at 11:30 PM ET/PT on G4. The announcement was made today by Ryan Vance, Executive Producer, G4.
“We’re thrilled that Eddie has joined the G4 team as host of ‘G4’s Training Camp,’” comments Vance. “Not only does he bring the ideal combination of charisma and credibility to the show, but he also helps bridge the gap between video games and sports.”
“G4’s Training Camp” is the only television series that takes video gamers off the couch and puts them on the field, in the rink, on the court, in the ring and on the track with today’s biggest athletes. Each 30-minute episode offers a different gamer the ultimate in sports fantasy fulfillment. In exchange for their personal secrets, tips and tricks to dominating top sports titles, “G4’s Training Camp” transports the gamer into the real world of their favorite sports video game, where they get a taste of what it’s like to play with the pros. Episodes feature Minnesota Vikings' offensive trio Daunte Culpepper, Nate Burleson and Jermaine Wiggins; WWE Champion John Cena; WBO Lightweight Champion Diego “Chico” Corrales; Los Angeles Kings hockey star Luc Robitaille; street ball legends Alimoe and the host of ESPN2’s “It’s The Shoes,” Bobbito Garcia; and many more.
Throughout his tenure as one of the NFL’s premier running backs, George not only possessed an explosive combination of speed, power and toughness, but was the epitome of durability. A Heisman Trophy winner out of Ohio State in 1995, George was drafted in the first round by the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans and owns virtually every franchise rushing record.
He also led the AFC Champion Titans to Super Bowl XXXIV in 2000. Off the field, he starred opposite Steven Seagal and Matthew Davis in the action-packed feature film Into the Sun last year and has appeared on the small screen in such series as Nash Bridges and Rock Me Baby. George is also involved in many entrepreneurial endeavors. He is part owner of “Eddie’s Sports Grille” in Nashville as well as Elete, a clothing line he started with Pittsburgh Steeler’s star Jerome Bettis.
Yes it's true that people shouldn't be into gaming only, but do they really want this to be a gaming show or a sports show? Basically this sounds like a knock-off of Spike TV's "Ultimate Gamer" only with a sports-only theme. I guess this is Sweat/G4 Sports repackaged only to be even less related to gaming (except for a couple tips for games, making up probably 5% of the show.)
So this year G4's New Shows Have Been:
* The Whip Set (Fastlane, Street Fury, and Formula D)
* The Man Show
* Brainiac
* Attack of the Show (Formerly Screen Savers)
* Video Game Vixens
* Cinematech: NE
* Happy Tree Friends and Friends
* Call For Help
* G4's Training Camp
Only two of those shows (VGV, being one of the worst shows EVER) are fully dedicated to gaming (although Call For Help and AOTS are a bit closer connected to technology and "gaming lifestyles.") Man Show, Whip Set, and Training Camp do not fit the demographic at all and those shows appear to be the big highlights for G4. I'm not liking how the future looks. X-Play is already turning into a B-Grade comedy show and I bet with the purchase of the Man Show, it might be possible that some shows will have to be cancelled on the network.
