Well, I just got some Thursday, and brother, they've been a living hell. My teeth are aching so badly! It'll take some time adjusting to them. Anyone here wear braces, or HAVE worn them?

I used to wear them....the pain will go away...but then if you get chains they'll hurt all over again......I'm glad I don't have to wear them anymore.....they're rather annoying

I used to have them...seriously, they're not all that bad. I was never one to like sticky or chewy foods anyway, so the fact that I couldn't eat them didn't affect me...

It's really only when they tighten them that it aches, but it's a very little ache, and only for a short time. What *is* annoying, though, is getting them stuck back to your teeth if they come out. Sucking the moisture out of one's mouth isn't the most pleasant experience...

Yeah, I had them and really really hated it. Danielle's right about the tightening/pain thing. Also, it hurts most when you first get them put on. So hopefully, within the next couple of days, it will start to subside.

The other thing that stinks is that you can't eat a lot of your favorite foods. I've always been a big fan of eating, so that bothered me a lot. There's sticky and chewy stuff that Danielle mentioned, but there's also fried chicken, corn on the cob, and some other hard stuff that can break the braces. Trust me, I learned the hard way with some of those foods.

Aw don't worry Thad. It's annoying, and a tiny bit painfull, but as stated above it won't be that way for long. I had them for a few years and go along fine. In fact, they actually IMPROVED my trumpet playing in the high school band. Boy those were the days.

Anyway! Tightening every 6 months or so will be a bit uncomftorble but only for like a day, if that. They're going to hurt now though, since they're just settling in. That's really the only bad part of the whole process. After your teeth start showing improvement and the tight feeling goes away you'll forget existing without them. "Wait, there was a time my mouth DIDN'T look like this?"

The only thing you have to dodge (but the doctors will take care of this, since it's their specialty) is making sure they don't take them off prematurely. If the time your mouth needs with them isn't calculated and waited out, the teeth could move slightly. But when they do come off make sure to wear that retainer when you're supposed to. It's like the teeth version of a smoker's nicotine patch, if you'd forgive the crude analogy, Very gently getting you off of the braces thing. :)

So in a few years you'll have a perfect smile, and I'll most likely still sound like an after school special. It's win-win.

I had them back as a freshmen in high school. They hurt the most the first month after getting them and after that it wasn't so bad. Adjusting to them took time. I had so many cuts in my mouth (thank goodness for wax)... and could only eat very soft foods (applesauce, pudding, yogurt, steamed egg dish). The only time it would really hurt was after my dentist tightened them and that'll usually last for a week. After that it wasn't so bad. :)

I got one part of the braces at the end of summer in 1998 (I don't remember whether it was top or bottom), and the second part in November of '98. So I had to go through that one week of pain twice. It really hurts, but it really does go away. And the pain from the tightening was gone by next morning. The food thing wasn't much of a problem for me. They said not to eat gum, and I hate all forms of gum so I didn't miss it.

My braces came off in June of this year so now I have a retainer. I have my doubts this thing actually works, but I still wear it every single day. It's not fun when I'm eating, and it pops off. I have to put it back in, but it won't fit right 'cause of the food...very aggravating.

The first day I tried to eat with my retainer was bad. It was a school day so I was with all of my friends. They laughed at me when I struggled with Cup O' Noodles soup, and two followed me when I went to clean it. They wanted to watch me take it out. I had my back to them while they talked about other retainers they had seen.

But I think it is worth it.

i just took mine off about a week ago and it felt like something is missing. i think the braces are worth it because i now have a nice grill. :D two things i really hated were eating and flossing. food always stuck to the braces no matter what and flossing becomes very tedious. i am glad the braces are off, but now i have to wear retainers on the bottom and upper portion of my teeth, so now i can't really pronounce words correctly.

I got mine waaaaaaay back in 7th grade. For the first six months, I had to wear the headgear too... you know, the leather straps that go around your head and hook to your teeth? Yech.

Oh, and never hold your dentist to the time he thinks it'll take to get them off. After a year and a half, he told me "It'll only be six more months now!" EVERY SINGLE FREAKIN' TIME I went in for an appointment. All told, I had the dang things on for 3 1/2 years. I have stubborn teeth...

I had braces in 6th grade. I only had four across the top so it wasn't so it didn't hurt... period. But everything before that did. Butterfly. Lingual (sp) Arch. Spacers. Mouse Trap... it goes on. Those hurt and then I only had my braces on for like 6 months. I went through 3 years of pain for six months of braces... I wasn't a happy persun.

LOL. I was supposed to have them on for around two years, however, I had them on for nearly five years. I got them off in September and have to wear a retainer at night.

I looked like a beaver from age 10 to 12. I NEEDED braces. I got them, and boy, what an improvement. They put my before and after pictures in some sort of hall of fame. I played the trumpet during the whole time, and with out the Morgan brace bumper, I could not have kept going.

Enough with the shameless plug.

I'm missing the two teeth that are supposed to be on the sides of the two big teeth in the front. So what the orthodontist did was brace my upper jaw forward so the canines would fill the slots. What bugged me was that he insisted he had to file them down. I thought I looked good as a Gothic guitar player with fangs. :D

Someone I know, 21 or so, just got em'. She says they hurt like a mo-fo. I've never had them. I thought I'd need them eventually. But, My teeth turned out just fine on their own. I have slight overbite, but, eh.

I never had braces and I don't know if I should...I mean, my mouth is like very small and my teeth are big and one of my fangs ( that is what they are called right? ) well it kinda does't fit anywhere so it wierd. But my dentist told me that they would not recomend braces since it might make me have headaches and that the rest of my teeth are alligned so my bite is firm and precise. But sometimes I wish I had straight teeth, but I am also told that my teeth are ok cuz it's charming. (O_o?...personlly I refere to my teeth as been trown in with a shovel cuz my maker was in a hurry)
*whispers; it's not really that bad...I just wanted straight teeth...but hey! I got a GREAT personality :D :D*
