View Full Version : What do you do to deal with stress?

We all have stress, but I'm curious to how you folks deal with it. Yeah, this is just another one of those get-to-know-your-fellow-TZers-and-their-quirks threads, but they're always fun, so shaddup.

The most common thing for me to do when I'm stressed out is read. I'll forget about my problems and jump into a book to listen to someone else's problems. I tend to read a lot anyway, so it seems no one notices a difference. Um, I have read about 70 books (novels and manga) so far this year. I'm proud of this fact... but that's getting off-topic.

I also write a lot in journals. Yes, yes, I keep a journal. Haha. Actually, I keep a few. I use notebooks because they're cheaper and less obvious. I vent about everything that's bothering me. I write mainly when I'm pissed off or really down. I rarely write when I'm happyish or in an okay mood because I can't seem to get words out to describe how I feel. Keeping that in mind, here's a fun fact for ya: I filled three notebooks this summer... don't I sound perky? =P

But most of all, I love to swing. Now wait a second, we all have our little hobbies that we do to escape and relax, so shush. Mine is swinging, yes. When I swing, my mind is clear. I don't care what's around me or what I was just doing, I just swing. Gosh, there's something about the lull of it and the air around me that brings serenity. I can think clearly about what's bothering me, and I can figure out what to do about certain problems. It's just so extremely calming.

How about you guys, what are your stress relievers? And if someone says Valium, I'll kick you.

I mainly like to ***** and hit walls for no damn reason... :p

Anyway, I just start up a session of X-men Legends on my Gamecube, usually. I love killing people with Nightcrawler... and teleporting past locked gates to kill people... and bringing Logan with me... yay... lol. :D

I tend to either play games, curse the world in my head and/or LJ, or take a bike ride.

When I'm stressed, I usually listen to music, mainly 80's and 90's pop and dance/techno music.

Kicking alot of butt on videogames tends to help, or some heavy music of some sort. The song Otherworld(a FFX classic in a sense, from this decade) is a song many fans will know well, which is one of my fave to choose.

Sleep. It's the best stress reliever.Not for me it isn't. I usually can't sleep when i'm under a lot of stress. I've always been a supporter of the "violent" method of releiving stress. If you have a punching bag at home, hit it with all your might till you're physically exhausted. You might discover that you feel pretty good afterwards. I'm also recomending hiking. Nothing a long walk around the neighborhood couldn't cure.

I'm actually very dissappointed in myself that I originally read this sentence in a completely different context than it was intended. After reading a few more lines, I figured it out.

It's official, my youth and innocence are no more. :crying:

Anyway, to deal with stress I figure out what is causing me stress and attempt to fix it. I will be single-minded in this quest, letting all else in my life go by the wayside until the stress is vanquished. I think look back, see what caused the stress, and take steps to ensure it never happens again.

I know that's not what the original poster wanted to know; most liklely asking how we deal with the symptoms of stress. I however, have a very low tolerance for stress. I think it gets to me more than most, and I have yet to find a way to mitigate its effect on my life short of getting to the problem and fixing it. Some people can live with it or deal with it's negative mojo; I am not one of those people.

Anxiety is another matter. I find the best way to deal with anxiety is to hit the gym. It does wonders.

For anxiety and stress problems, I:

-Read fanfiction. No matter how bad it is, it seems to calm me down.
-Play video games. Sport or battling games work best.
-Listen to music.
-Eat. Yeah, I know, a bad way to deal, but it can be very comforting.
-Watch TV.
-Code HTML. By that I mean update or design my webpages.

hhmm...

Before I used to head out and join my friends. They were my source of escape. We'd go sit on rooftops and talk our heart out.Now... I take a long warm bath. Or sleep. Or just lie in bed contemplating. Also very recently I've discovered my backyard. It is large with huge trees above. I get a chair, sit there and read my fav. books.

Then there's also my LJ, which I've started up pretty recently too. I vent there.Sometimes.

I hold a loud scream as long as possible if I'm really under Stress.

Otherwise I watch cartoons or surf the net if it's not the really insane stress mentioned above

Last Christmas I morphed my backyard patio into, like, a mini gym. Turn the boombox on while working out is great. And when some kind of outside force/inspiration dawns on you, makes the end result better. After that, I'd hit the shower, accomadate myself, and head for the Story Board. Make Soda feel what I feel, or what's left of it anyway.

* Play Video Games
* Watch Cartoons, Star Trek, or other escapist and optimistic entertainment
* Go for a long walk
* Talk to my good friends
* Read
* Write on my stories
* Talk to myself
* Cook (especially jambalya :anime: or cookies :D )
* Remember good times or consult my compliment collection (an archive of all the great things my friends/family/others have said about me)
* Write reviews and opinions on things I passionately like or vehemently dislike

And, when I'm really ticked (which for me is extremely rare)...
* Tear up tissues

Since I have an autism disorder,I usually start flapping my hands and mumbling to myself. Sometimes I start rocking back and fourth in my chair in class because i'm upset. Other times I lose it and start screaming and hitting myself and start hopping around flapping my hands.

Usually pout, yell, cry, bemoan my lot in life, spend money in ill advised ways, contemplate suicide, take a nap, you know, the usual.

Heh, I guess I don't really "relieve" my stress much do I?

I either just go and punch or wreck something, play piano, draw, or if I'm lucky, play video games. I love beating the hell out of Raphael with Talim in SC2 when I'm mad. :anime:

Hmm

Write
Beat the ever living crap out of an opponent on a random fighting game (MvC2 is my choice)
Sit there and pout
Play DDR - effective means of tiring myself out so much I am sore the next day
Draw
Shadow Boxing - I only did this once and it was awesome.
Listen to music. Dark stuff makes me uppy. Light stuff makes me angry for some reason...
Tha's about it.

When I'm under stress I'll generally listen to music, read, write, or surf the net, or watch a movie. Anything that can get me away from it for awhile helps. Then I'm suitably relaxed to face whatever I need to again.

If the stress I have is small, I sometimes not talk even when being asked something. This usually happens when I'm bothered by someone or something. Sometimes I swear under my breath.

If it intensifies, I may even start destroying stuff.

To try to reduce stress, I could drive in my car, listen to music, draw, or maybe play with my mascot dolls.

The comedic answer: I kill lots and lots of people. Repeatedly.

The truthful answer: I go jogging to relieve stress. Or if I'm in my car, I just hit my steering wheel a lot. Better than hitting a person.

Wow, there are some depressing responses on here...either that or sarcastic, I can't tell any more.

I deal with stress by running, it makes me feel better. Sometimes I'll watch a DVD or something and laugh my butt off.

I wanted to open a thread on this before searching, glad I found this.
Mine might be a bit odd; but I watch medical examinations, I always feel relaxed when I have a physical which is why I wanted to be a doctor, if I have the chance now that I'm almost 23 years old to get in med-school I'll take the chance. A hospital always make me feel like I'm home.

Just don't want to be a surgeon

In addition to what's been said here, watching comedy online videos (I'm A Marvel/I'm A DC, Angry Video Game Nerd and The Nostalgia Critic) are good for relieving stress or frustration.

The best idea is to go out and exercise. I usually just go and run a couple miles in around 20 mins and feel so much better after. It wakes you up and makes you feel accomplished (at least with me).

I get anxiety... ALOT. So I guess the only safe option I've really taken was to try drawing or writing to relieve stress.

I'd rather not go into details though, but I've had tendencies to solve stress in... erm, unhealthy ways. I sometimes take the extreme route if I'm so overwhelmed to the point that I get heart palpitations and that burning feeling in my chest practically suffocates me. >.< But that's another story.

Sleep and food definitely help though, I will say that. XD

Excercise really, really helps. And this is coming from one of the laziest people on Earth.

I get stressed out fairly easily. If I'm feeling especially lazy, I just get onto this website, but if some tiny thing here stresses me out, it's just time to take a nap.

Oh, and hot water baths. Lots and lots of 'em.

Believe it or not, the most favorite thing I like to do is sleep. But even I get too stressed out to sleep good...

I draw some anime that I'm working on, watch some random hilarious videos on Youtube, watch cartoons, or play videogames.

My #1 stress reliever is landscape painting. I want it to stop snowing, so I can drive up into the mountains to take a picture that I can actually paint.

Whenever I'm feeling stressed, I simply take out my anger on everyone I know, personally or otherwise.

That probably isn't very healthy, but I'm aware that a lot of people do it.

"You should try logging off. It relieves the tension."
If I had better things to do I would. :D...........Yeah, I'm working on that.

Anyway, I've actually had problems with this, but I've been finding ways to deal. Sometimes I just go to LiveJournal to just let it out (that's why I got one.........even though I forget it's there, which is why I was so reluctant), or I go look at funny stuff (Whose Line is it Anyway?, Abridged Series, Most Comedians). If I had my video games here I'd probably use those, too. Beating the crud out of people in WWE games is always fun. I think I'd likely use Smash Brothers Brawl if I had a Wii, though.

Most of my stress these days is just lack of sleep, so I just sleep.
