Well, FMA's back, and off to a good start. Here''s a few of my observations:
-Background Music in the Episode's begining sounds something like out of the Cabinet of Calligari.
-Oh yes. How sweet the Intro is.
-Chess as a metaphor?
-Interesting, the world of FMA seem to have a more advanced knowledge of some sciences than our world did in the 1900's.
-Wow,Blood. Lots of it. That was Surrprising!
- how sad, poor Iuzmi
-Wow, Teacher is so full of Wisdom.
-Ed the Kitty-Saver!
-Awww, poor Kid. Hey, she got a preety good VA!
-FMA is so filled with Knowledge.
-EASY COOKING? What's with all the Cook Books in this show!
-Well, now I know where Ed get his mad Mortal Kombat skillz.
-The Ultraviolence! The Pathos! The Werid Ending Credits!
Overall, a good episode. 3 out of 5.

Two sides to a coin, ol' chum. Feel her out.
I don't believe anything is two sides of a coin and you can actually try a different method. But I'll continue to watch.
In fact, it doesn't seem to be the teacher concept as much as the long lost friend/relative/superior returns with a badass "You haven't changed at all, have you?" attitude concept that's bugging me.
Depends on your level of tolerance for melodrama. As with any anime.
Ever seen Trigun? You know those episodes coming up towards the end where Vash is more depressed than ever? That's pretty close to my threshold.
I agree, we need more Greed.
This would be a good place for a pun in which myself or someone else says "a-GREED" and I would proceed to expell my urine chuckling at it.

Ah, FMA, it's nice to have you back. Loved the opening where Ed tried to get out the window and Izumi knocked him back into the wall. And as soon as I saw the cat on the roof, I knew that was going to lead to something between Teacher and the Elrics. The hug was a really nice little scene there at the end.

Between the issues with your anus and your apparant velvety bladder I am beginning to wonder if you are toting around a catheder bag and portable level 4 colonoscopy kit.
And no, I have no idea what any of that means.
Tienshin
09-18-2005, 12:59 AM
Colonoscopy is when you have to prep a few days before it by drinking a medcinal liquid to prepare the bowels, It's like a strong Laxitive. The procedure itself is when they shove a tube up your ass and fire water up your ass and then suck it out with all the compacted feces that you acumilate over the years.
I don't think you could get a portable kit though, the average person has about 30 pounds of compacted feces inside...
a catheder bag is a bag(duh) on a grounded object that is connected to a tube that's connected where the urine expells
just don't forcibly pull it off while it's connected, you could damage yourself.
One of the most reported hospital accidents are when patients move quickly while the bag is still attached(i.e running and not realising it's attached)....males can especialy injure themselves because that thing stays on like a vyse

Ah, to once again bathe in the glow that is Fullmetal Alchemist; is is nice to see new episodes again, Brothers Elric, how you have been missed!
Now, to business.
I'm sure some of you have noticed the red marking on Izumi's chest. Look closer. Look familiar? I thought so.
I had assumed that this marking was some kind of Elric family crest or something. Obviously it is not. Either it is tied to Izumi, or to alchemists in general. If it is connected to Izumi (perhaps as the sign of her students, like the "kame" kanji on Goku and Krillin's uniforms in Dragonball) how come she didn't notice it on Al's shoulder (before she found out he was Al, of course)?
If this is a symbol related to alchemists in general, how come it hasn't been seen elsewhere? Mustang and Armstrong wouldn't wear it, since they're seldom seen out of uniform (or with a shirt, in Armstrong's case), but we've seen civilian alchemists and state alchemists in civvies. To the best of my knowledge the symbol has only been seen on the back of Ed's coat, Al's shoulder, and Izumi's chest.
Of course, I might not be as observant as some.
Tonight's episode answered a question: who was the teacher mentioned in "Mother"? (she was seen in silloette) However, several more questions were presented. The symbol stuff; what was Izumi was doing in Resembool (sp?) that rainy day; what problem does she have, medically speaking (she barfed blood!); what will Mustang do now that he's back in Central?
I'm so looking forward to next Saturday!

About the symbol Izumi got... She had obtained it from someone else. It is entirely possible that there are other alchemists who were trained from the same 'school' of alchemy, so Al's armour symbol doesn't immediately make him Al in Izumi's eyes.
You will see from whom Izumi inherits her symbol from, eventially...
Malex
09-18-2005, 03:04 PM
The meaning behind the Serpent Cross symbol is the meaning of Alchemy: fixing the volatile. The legend of alchemy is to make a panacea to mend and construct things. It's the creed of all alchemists.
The reason why Izumi and the Elrics have it will be explained later.

I know nothing more than what has been shown on AS, but something tells me their teacher either dies, or had a kid who died, or isn't able to have kids... or something like that. Simply from the amount of death-related drama in this episode and that one guy's reaction when someone asked if she had any kids of her own. There's something there that's gonna be revealed later... I just know it. Or I think I do. >_>
Watch me eat my words later. Ah well. ;)
Anyway, the rest of the episode was pretty enjoyable - not my favorite ever, but several moments had me laughing pretty hard. And then the 'moment' at the end, however predictable and perhaps melodramatic, still got to me a little.

Ya' know, with Al now being sentient armor, I'll bet he could take Izumi, if he tried. Or at least hold his own. I hope an upcoming ep. will show that. Though it's too bad many of you have seen all the eps, now you can squash my hopes of what will come on FMA more quickly then ever.
They must have started a half-dozen mini-stories with this ep. The part I'm looking most forward to finding out is why transmutation makes Izumi sick. Very interesting.
I also have another interesting thought, though it may be just a plot hole. When Ed and Al were to show off some alchemy, how was Ed going to do it without giving away to his teacher that he had done something wrong? It was said back when Ed got his arm blown off that he could no longer use Alchemy, even, apparently, the circular kind. Perhaps I just misunderstood the dialogue then, but that's what they seemed to say.
All in all, I enjoyed this episode. Of course, it can't be as good as others simply because of it's placement as an introductory ep. It's sometimes hard to be deep and dramatic when the ep. is mostly expositional. To their credit, they did a darn good job mixing the two.
I give it 3 outta 5 circles.
Edit: After a few minutes of thinking, I think I might have a plausible solution to my question about Ed. He could have drawn a circle but only appeared to use it. He would have had to find a way to hide his hands clasping though. Obviously, all of this is academic now. But then again, so are many scientific discussions.
Malex
09-18-2005, 06:15 PM
Izumi's illness is not transmutation-induced, and I will leave it as that.
About Al taking on Izumi, why would Al even think of fighting his teacher? Size would not matter because Izumi is much wiser than the Elrics and could run (transmutation:D) circles around them.
I may have seen all of the eps, but I am not here to dash your dreams. Just enjoy the second half of FMA.

Well, we did see the younger Ed and Al take on Izumi in this ep. It would be interesting to see some scenes where Ed and Al show their teacher how they have improved. Seeing as how Al has surpassed Ed in combat and, being sentient armor, he would move much faster. That would make an interesting match. I would like to see that the end result be that Al holds his own but does not have the ability to take her.
Unfortunately, this seems to be all moot. Given your response, I'm guessing that all this won't happen. Oh well, I'm sure the writers have some much better stuff to show us.:)

Ahhh, FMA is back. I can live again.
I have mixed feelings about Izumi. In a way, I like her because her presence allows for some very funny scenes. On the other hand, I desperately want to see her get the crap beat out of her in a fight. The way she wails on Ed and Al constantly(while they just sit there and take it) makes her seem kind of like a bully. Then there was her line saying that State Alchemists would kill innocent people without hesitation if they were ordered to...well, she kind of ticks me off.

Guys please though, no more spoilers like that. We're all very happy you know what happens in the series, if you wanna be cryptic, that's fine, but noone can resist those damn spoilers. So knock it off, will ya?
As for them skipping UNDO, I can understand that, I wasn't a big fan of it. But come ON!! Rewrite?! They're not gonna have Rewrite be the 2nd season song?
I love Ready Steady Go, it's my favorite of the 4, but Rewrite came in a close second. What the hell?Sony is paying them money to show Ready, Steady, Go for the whole series (since L'Arc is under their contract), and Williams Street doesn't want to refuse that money.

"Ready Steady Go!!!" is the opening and will be the opening for all the episodes. That has been said since before the series started airing. To get all the openings as they aired in Japan, you have to buy the DVDs.

Those ops were so badass though :( I'm not say I like it or anything, but it is fact. 'Rewrite' is supperior to all the other FMA openings, IMO, and I even like 'UNDO' more then 'Ready Steady Go!!!' because I'm honestly tired of 'Ready Steady Go!!!' As I said earlier, you'd have to get the DVDs to see the openings as they aired in Japan.

Izumi is the awesome, and I love the upcoming arc. For every question that is answered, three more will be raised. :anime:
I love both Undo and Rewrite and it's a shame they won't be playing those. Rewrite is just awesome -- my reaction when watching that was, "Hey, did FMA's animation budget suddenly go up?" Undo really fits well with the current arc, IMO, much better than Ready Steady Go.

That's not really necessary.

Because of the previous spoiler post, I'd like to take this moment and invite you all to join with me in song and prayer praising our great and wonderful forum god.....er..well, whatever the name is of the guy who created this forum...for having the righteous foresight to include the wonderful provision of "the big black spoiler box" to protect the rest of us from those dingleberries who would ruin our enjoyment of our favorite shows with their unreasonable spoiler posts.
Let us all join hands and sing.

I don't know why people could be so evil to spoil this series.
Ed and Al will be looking for the Philosopher's Stone. There will a span of episodes with Greed in them. The last episode is number 51. Al's full name is Alphonse Elric.

What annoys me is when con retailers just leave out spoiler plushies. I really didn't need to see that Al-Ed siamese twin thing.

The AS shop actually had a spoileriffic wallscroll.
They explained Al's new markings by saying "Al has a new paint job!" and it had Dante, Hohenheim, and the Gate on it...
