Welcome to Dragon Ball Z Uncut! This thread is for discussion of the four episodes airing during the week of September 12 through September 15. Don't spoil future episodes, and don't go nuts discussing non-edits, I guess.
Okay, have fun. Tonight's episode:
English - "Vegeta has a Ball"
Japanese - "Courage Times One Hundred! The Warriors Gathered Under Kaio"

You know I think that today's episode had Vegeata's most evil action in the entire series: Killing the village of innocent nameks. I mean besides when he was Majin Vegeta in the Babadi Saga, you really don't see Vegeta kill innocent people. Usually he kills minor villians/henchmen characters. But here he just slaughtered all of those nameks. Defintley shows how much a bastard he was...
And why it took so long for him to gradully change his ways
There is some hope in this episode: The Eldest Namek's first mention, and of course the others arriving at King Kai's at the end. I remember they combined they're visit into one episode in the Ocean dub.

Woo, the first "real" swear in DBZ. I don't consider stuff like "damn" or "hell" to be swears, but looks like FUNI actually bit the bullet.
I really loved this episode, because there's so many things going on at once, and the plot thickens.
Vegeta murders the Namek village in cold blood, we can see that he's still truly evil at this point of the series. We also got a lot of backstory on planet Namek and it's people. We learn Dende's name, that Nameks only drink water, that Namek's are asexual, and that a storm nearly wiped everyone out on Namek.
Zarbon's voice is growing at me, but the Ocean one was much better. One of the only times I'll say I liked an old voice actor better.
And of course seeing Yamcha, Tien, Chaotsu, and Piccolo again was cool. It's kind of amusing to think about them all running down Snake way together, lol.

I very agree with you. I really liked Zarbon's Ocean voice. I think his current voice is too deep and quiet, as well. I also don't like tgat his accent isn't as strong.

I agree. What else do you expect from Paul Dobson, a.k.a. Naraku?
I remember from the original Saban episode, when Vegeta was walking off to get the dragon ball, the Namek elder asked him to stop. Vegeta then told him not to stop him and blew him away. In Funi's version, the Namek elder simply stood up, which was enough for Vegeta to kill him (was that in the original Japanese version)?. Interesting how Vegeta needs only the smallest reason to kill someone like that.

Yes. He didn't exactly use his Naraku voice, though. It wasn't as menacing.
I want to make a comment about Zarbon and Dodoria's voices. I'd said in a Talkback thread from a few weeks ago (basically when Zarbon and Dodoria were introduced) that I didn't like them. Whoever was playing Dodoria in the redub couldn't hold the voice that well, and Sabat was making Zarbon sound like a snooty rich brat. But I was comparing the redub voices to the original Ocean voices.
Well, I had a chance to pop in my DVD of the Burdock special, and listen to the Japanese voices of those two (it had been a while). As it turns out, I was dead wrong. Zarbon does sound a bit snooty in the Japanese version. Not quite as obvious and Sabat's version, but you can hear it in his voice. And the new Dodoria voice was actually pretty close to the Japanese voice as well, but he's dead now, so it doesn't matter.
But then I popped in one of the Freeza arc DVDs, when there's a flashback to some events that happen with a certain relative of Vegeta's. And in that flashback, which effectively was the first time Sabat got voice Zarbon, he does a much better job of incorporating a less snooty feel, while mixing in some Paul Dobson-esque voice mannerisms, which made me like that version of his Zarbon voice a lot better. But right now, I think he needs to cut back on the snootyness a bit.
G1Ravage

Nope. No cursing.
But it was used appropriately. You could imagine him actually saying those things in that situation. I'm surprised he didn't in the Japanese version.
Man, I've been waiting years for a Z-Warrior to actually pound his fist into the ground and say "damn it" in the English dub.

Heh, it looks like Laura Bailey finally got to voice Dende after all. :anime:
I didn't realize it at first, and for awhile thought it was Alison Retzloff, voice of Conan Edogawa on Case Closed, but when Dende started pleading to Gohan and Krillin it hit me as it sounded like her other roles such as Tohru (Fruits Basket) and Sana (Kodocha).
What's funny is that in an interview Laura said that her first role was replacing the voice actress for Dende, Ceyli Delgadillo, when she was unavailable. However, Ceyli was able to make it at the last minute and rerecorded all the audio that Laura did. This was before she landed the role for Kid Trunks.
I think its more on the line that the DBZ's redub voice director hasn't looked at any of the Ocean dub to compare and make a connection. Sabat also has only played Zarbon a few times (IIRC, one flashback scene in Season 3, and in the Bardock Special which was done back in 2000-2001 I think) so its possible that he really doesn't remember how he played Zarbon, or even if he does, is only responding to how the voice director wants him to sound.

Couple of more points from last night's episode:
-Kyle Hebert pronounced "Kamehameha" correctly during the recap. Finally.
-FUNi still couldn't make the scene where Kaio contacts Goku emotional. What's up with Kaio snorting and making jokes? It's supposed to be a serious moment.
-The dialogue during the Kaio scene was improved somewhat over the Saban script, but was still missing one VERY important piece of dialogue. Here's the Japanese script in that scene, courtesy of DBZOA.net. Compare it to what they say in the redub:
{Voice:} Goku! Can you hear me? Goku!
{Goku:} Is that you, Kaio-sama?
{Kaio:} Indeed it is. Are you in space by any chance? What are you doing there?
{Kaio:} I see. I hope you do find Dragonballs on Namek.
{Goku:} Don't you know everything, Kaio-sama? Some unbelievable things are happening
on Namek.
{Kaio:} Unbelievable? Well, you can tell me later. You see, some guests have called
on me.
{Goku:} Guests? What about them?
{Kaio:} They're amazing. They traveled Snake Road even faster than you did to get
here. And there are four of them.
{Goku:} Four?
{Kaio:} Right. You should know all of them very well.
{Goku:} No way...!
*It's Yamucha, Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Piccolo, all with haloes*
{Kaio:} They all want to train even harder than you did.
{Goku:} That's great! All of them reached you, Kaio-sama?
{Yamucha:} May I talk to Goku?
{Kaio:} Put your hand on my shoulder and talk to him.
{Yamucha:} Can you hear me, Goku?
{Goku:} Yamucha!
{Yamucha:} We met with Kami-sama in the afterlife and he told us about this place. I
heard you're all going to Piccolo's home planet to look for Dragonballs to bring us
back to life.
{Goku:} He said four of you. Yamucha and Tenshinhan...is Piccolo there too?
{Yamucha:} He is.
{Piccolo:} My pride won't allow only you to get stronger.
{Goku:} Who's the last one? Kami-sama?
{Yamucha:} No, Kami-sama stayed behind. It's Chaozu.
{Goku:} Chaozu! Chaozu was blown to pieces. Is he okay?
{Yamucha:} Kami-sama made a special effort to reconstruct him.
{Goku:} Wow! That's great, Chaozu!
{Goku:} With all of you there, I feel 100 times stronger!
-Man, don't you just feel awful for the Namekians? I felt terrible when Dende said there probably were very few surviving Nameks left. You never felt this kind of emotion toward the Nameks in the Saban dub, when everyone apparently survived all the attacks or was phased into another dimension. This is a perfect example of how important the concept of death is.

Ultra Mike
09-13-2005, 09:34 AM
They're weaker then Goku is now. However remember when Goku first traveled Snake Way he was only around 400-500 max (and around 800-900 when he ate King Yemma's apple) while Piccolo and Co were above 1,000 when they traveled there. Also I doubt they fell into any of the detours Goku did (Hell, Princess Snake, etc).

Goku traveled across Snake way after beating Radditz. His power level was what, 300 something at the time? After Piccolo trained with Gohan, and the others trained with Kami, they all became much stronger than Goku was at the beginning of the series.

Dende sounds funky. Though girls often voice little boys, it just sounds too girly to me. And the whole thing with Krillin cursing surprised me also. I'm just not used to hearing cursing in Dragon Ball Z, since I saw most of the entire English dub before I read the manga.
And yes, Tien's joke-telling was hilarious. Not because of the joke, but because of how serious he was. He screamed it like he was powering up or something and then when the light cleared he was all panting and everything like he just finished a big fight.
This is a perfect example of how important the concept of death is.
To me, though, it still seems like in Dragon Ball Z the concept of death isn't important at all, because they always have the Dragon Balls to wish them back to life.

Although the scene of Piccolo catching Bubbles I always found cool, it does bring up a question: Piccolo was able to catch him in at most 2 to 3 seconds, and that's with Bubbles having such a head start. At the end of Goku's training he caught Bubbles (without as much of a head start) in a second. So how did Piccolo get that strong anyway? Wasn't he at most like 2500 or something while Goku was reguarly 5,000? Did running along Snake Way improve him that much?
It's also a bust that King Kai never teaches these guys his special techniques after they complete his training. How come we never see Yamcha bust out a Spirit Bomb (you know which one I mean) or have Piccolo use Kaio Ken? I'm sure Piccolo could of handled that and maybe have done a lot better then Freiza due to having it
Anyway since TZ will be down for awhile in an hour guess we'll have to wait till at least tommorow to comment on tonight's episode. I should note that there are only about 13 or so episodes left in Season 2 so in a few weeks we'll find out whether we'll get Season 3 or go back to Season One.

"MOOOOOOOOONKKKEEEY!"
"My steaks been Tienderized."
"Absolutely Noooooooooot!"
"You've seen the beauty and now here's the beast!"
Guru's voice sounds identical to his Season 3 voice, which is good. Nail sounds more or less the same as Season 3 Nail too, so the voices are in continuity.
The Zarbon/Vegeta fight was much more brutal in the uncut version obviously, I really like the pacing in these fights. They last no more than 10 minutes, yet the impact and intensity of it is still there. Too bad other fights in DBZ are stretched out beyond belief.

He got his ass kicked by Andriod 18
He got smashed around by a Cell Junior
He got beat several times by Kid Buu
And if you want to count DBGT, he got his ass kicked by Super 17, Omega Shenron and Syn Shenron.
If you want to count the movies he got owned by Super Andriod 13, Brolly, Bojack, Janeba and Hildergarn
If you count future continuity he got beat around by regular 17 (as seen in flashforwards/History Of Trunks in Future Trunk's time).

If that were the case, we'd never have Vegeta being all pissed off at being 'beaten by Kakarott' that we do later. Vegeta couldn't win without having to resort to transforming, as Goku (along with triple Kaiou-Ken) beat him every which way beforehand.

Hey, get off Vegeta. Yeah, he's been beaten sometimes, but never once was it complete ownage. He always atleast put up a decent fight as he went down. Which can't be said for some others who get taken down by single attacks and don't contribute any damage.

Well to be fair....
He gets [I]totally owned]/I] by 4th Form Freeza. Dosen't land an attack or hit on him at all and gets completley beaten by the evil tryant. I mean yeah it's not like anyone but Goku could touch Freeza at that point but that is a point in which he really dosen't put up any kind of a fight. Freeza was just toying with him really. I have to agree with CyberCubed though. The pacing of this fight were nice although it's obvious they reused some of the powerup footage a few times and of course transformed Zarbon's various knees to Vegeta's stomach. I think that one was used like three times.

See what I don't understand is why are we only talking about Vegeta getting owned. Like he was the only one who got his ass handed to him. Look at Goku. He got owned by Radditz, Money Vegeta, Captain Ginyu, Freiza, Cell, Majin Buu. Same with Trunks. The only enemies he beat in the entire Andriod Cell Saga were weak as hell. Point is, everyones died at least once so there.....

Although Gohan held out until the very end of the series(with like 15 episodes left), before dying his one and only time. If Toriyama hadn't had his ending overruled, Gohan would have been the one person to last the whole series without dying. Damn Goku fanboys and their incessant complaining.

Because Vegeta just got his butt handed to him by Zarbon. Goku, Gohan, and Krillin haven't been beaten up yet.
Because Vegeta just got his butt handed to him by Zarbon. Goku, Gohan, and Krillin haven't been beaten up yet. But they will be. In reality Gohan and Krillin get their asses kicked just as bad as Vegeta throughout the saga. Gohan gets his neck broken, Krillin gets a hole in his stomach/his body broken/gets blown up. Hell, you guys seem to forget that Vegeta does come back and kill Zarbon which nullifies his ass getting kicked in the first place.:p

that fight was way brutal those headbutts and resulting blood grossed me out :( the three sun thing stinks since they are there so long we could have had some neat night time battles and stuff oh well. Nail and Guru sound fine and its good Krillen flew fast because DBZ is so much better when plot points are reached in a timely manner
one thing though why did Tien have a hammer  isn't that for the Gregory training only? poor Bubbles :(

i really dont see how spoilers is necessary at this point, i mean spoilers are used so you dont spoil something that hasn't been seen yet .... but how is it possible to know when every person has seen the Dragonball Sagas? I mean if you're going to use a spoiler for something that been shown a few times already then to keep that trend up you would have to put the tags around (for example) yesterday's episode if you're going to use something from there to refer to today's episode

i just cant get over the fact of vegeta "talking" to himself, and then in yesterday's ep. Sabat was four characters in one episode!!! Piccolo, Guru, Zarbon and Vegeta ... talk about multi-tasking, especially when you're fighting the other person you also voice

i wonder how he'll do with the "i'll get you for this, you won't escape my wrath!"
btw, what ep. is that in ... the original ep?

Actually, Chris Sabat did 5 characters in yesterdays episode. Vegeta, Piccolo, Yamcha, Zarbon, and Guru.
He'll do all 5 again in today's episode as well.
Chris Sabat was pretty much always in the dub of DB/DBZ/GT.
In Dragonball he did Yamcha who was pretty much a major character throughout the whole thing, as well as Kami and Piccolo (and King Piccolo) during the final arcs.
In DBZ he gets the pleasure of doing 3 major characters (Vegeta, Piccolo, and Yamcha) along with all the villains and minor characters he does in the various sagas.
In GT Sabat was out of luck though, since Piccolo, Vegeta, and especially Yamcha barely get any screentime in GT. :D

English - "Guru's Gift"
Japanese - "Defend the Planet of Hope!! Kuririn's Astonishing Power-Up"
I wish they wouldn't call him "Guru".....

Uh, no he isn't. I think that will start early next week but so far Gohan's still back with Bulma.

Well he was the voice of Omega Shenron the final villian of the series, so that's something at least, even if Omega only lasted like 4 or so episodes.
Wow the first teasings of a Super Sayian. And also the offical history of Piccolo/Kami. Glad they took out the "If I had any super powers, I would of had hair".

Did anyone notice that Toei made a design mistake. In a couple of episodes ealier Frieza sent Zarbon and a "purple" warrior after Vegeta. That "purple" henchman was suppose to be the one who found the destroyed Namek village, but then he suddenly changed to "orange"!
CyberCubed
09-15-2005, 11:01 PM
Indeed. Zarbon told "Abul" the Purple henchmen, to check the village.
In this episode, there was an Orange henchmen who check the village. And instead, Abul the purple henchmen was in Frieza's spaceship.
Unless Abul just gave up and went back to the ship, and this orange guy was just flying around from nowhere, then TOEI made a mistake. Either way the orange guy is dead and Abul is in the ship.
So in this episode we get more of Kami's backstory, the first teasings of a Super Saiyan, Krillin's "I got the Poooower"! (I'm disappointed that FUNI changed that), and Gohan goes searching for Vegeta's dragonball.
Goku got 3 seconds of screentime in this ep, TOEI made sure he was in EVERY episode.

Hmmm....Terry Klassen's name is back in the credits as a writer.
I wonder if they had to put his name back in since they're stealing some of his lines from the Ocean dub script.
I too miss Krillin's "I now have PPPPOOOOOWWWWWEEEERRRRR!"

Wait, so, you're saying in the manga it was Apool who killed the last Namek villager?
Anyway, did anyone else notice an animation error? When Orlen first appeared he had a crotch plate. In the next scene he didn't have one. Then when he was back at Freeza's base he had one again.
By the way, since they make a wish that wishes all the people that Freeza killed back to life, then does that mean that Orlen gets to come back to life too?

It specifically said "All the GOOD People Freeza and his men killed" so that means that Orlen did not get wish back to life. Although technically the namek that Orlen kills should of been wished back though. Since Orlen was one of Freeza's men.
Sorry about the mistake in Gohan getting the Dragonball. Didn't realize how fast the plot was creeping today.

No. In the manga none of the villagers survive Vegeta's attack. We see Appule looking at all the dead villagers, and then rushing to tell Freeza that the village was attacked. Freeza then figures out that it must have been Vegeta who attacked the village.

Apparently he was classified as "good enough" to be wished back. I guess his talk about getting pride before his death was enough, although it is kind of a plothole. Still how else would you explain him coming back but none of the minions killed by Freeza coming back?

Not that I recall.
By the way, was I the only one pissed off that in yesterday's episode they added in that dialogue from Guru about Nappa being a super saiyan? That was all a bunch of bull.
Guru thought Nappa might have been a Super Saiyan since Katat was killed. Then he realised Katat split into Kami & Piccolo, so their power was cut in half.
As for Vegeta being wished back to life, Dende never made the distinction between good and evil. He just said "bring everyone killed by Freeza and his men back to life!" Theoretically, Apple should have been brought back to life, but was probably either killed in Namek's explosion or off-screen during the Goku/Freeza fight.
Of course, the true reason is that Toriyama forgot that little detail.

Since the wish was worded so broad, shouldn't it have brought everyone Frieza or his henchmen killed back to life? What about all the planets and people Frieza killed before Namek? Were they brought back to life too?
I realize people have a 1 year time limit to be brought back, but what if he killed other aliens in the same year? Why does the Dragon seem to only bring the people who died on Namek back to life?

Mr Popo: Ee-----tooo...Furizaatachi ni korosaretamono wo ikikaerasetehoshii.

Hi, long time lurker first time poster here.
Last thursday's episode had a lot of dialog from Freeza, and I know his voice is kind of.. non-male sounding.
I was thinking he would sound much better if he had the VA of the Prophet of Truth from Halo 2. There is a video here (http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/cutscenes/halo2.html#http://nikon.bungie.org/misc/cutscenes/halo2.html#22_inside_job). It is under "The Hopes and Dreams of the Covenant." the 3.1 MB one is QuickTime format, the 3.5 MB one is WMV. His first line is "The hopes of all the Covenant rest on your shoulders, Cheiftain."
Unlikely that that would happen but its cool to imagine some of Freeza's lines in that voice :) .

Still doesn't sound right. Freeza is supposed to sound like a gay guy.Nah...Freeza has a menacing, but at the same time, polite voice. I wouldn't say he sounds gay...but if I had to classify the feminine tone of his voice, I'd liken it to the way a man would speak around the time of the Renaissance.
