View Full Version : Most overrated and Most Underrated AS Original

Overrated: Robot Chicken. It's a pretty funny show, but most of the Time it just flops, The pacing is awful and It focuses too much on Adult Humor than to have any real humor. It's that sorta haha they made fun of this show and then the famous person died and there was sex gags and holy crap, I can't believe they did that humor. Some sketches are hilarious, but when they're not, I just feel bored.
Underrated: Tom Goes to the Mayor. Everyone seems to hate this show, but i think it's a work of pure genius and has become my third fav. adult swim show. The dialogue is Brilliantly Improvised, The plots are fun, and You gotta love that wacky Mayor! I think The main turnoff for most people is the Animation, but since when did you watch AS for the animation (Venture Bros. aside) Just rewatch the eps. and soon you will realize it's genius!

I'd have to agree with you on both of those. Why would people hate Tom goes to the Mayor? I mean, it's Bob Odenkirk! And Micheal Ian Black stars as an equally wacky relative of the Mayor.

I second what you've said for the exact same reasons.
I don't HATE Robot Chicken. It's just mediocre and gets some of the highest ratings on the block.
I do LOVE Tom for the weirdness, the improvisation, the akward pauses, and of course the Odenkirk.
I hate both those shows, The Brak show is defeinetly one that is underrated.

I don't really like Robot Chicken either. Every episode that I've watched, I barely laugh at all.

I agree that Tom Goes to the Mayor is the most underrated, but the most overrated would have to be Inuyasha. The size of it's fanbase definitely doesn't show the quality of the work which is crap. I could have taken the plot and made it ten times better with no experience. :|
I'll forgive Takahashi for Inuyasha though because of Ranma 1/2. >.>

Tom has definitely grown on me, and I've now realized the humor in the absurdity around the mayor. It's still a flawed show (too many pauses) but it has more laughs in it than I previously thought. Definitely underrated in my book.
I don't really have a pick for "overrated" since most AS originals' prime moments outweigh their falls. If I had to pick, I'd go with Sealab 2021.

Overrated original... hmmm... probably Sealab 2021. I just never found it funny.
Underrated... I guess I'll go with The Brak Show unless Home Movies counts.

Inuyasha isn't an original, it's anime...Forgive me for not reading through the entire title. -_-' I tend to do that a lot.
Anyway then, most overrated original would be Robot Chicken.

You got it down Daffy Dork. I honestly don't get why Robot Chicken is a huge ratings hit and why most people hate the hell out of Tom. Brak is a good runner-up for underrated show as it was good the first two seasons at least, whereas the last season mostly sucked except for the halloween episode and the last episode, IMO. Only other overrated original I could say is Birdman, because it's one of the more popular shows but I actually prefer Sealab and Space Ghost to it. Don't get me wrong though, I do like Birdman a lot though.

Of the originals?
The Toonzone list:
Most Overrated: Space Ghost, I guess I came on at the bad part of its run but what I saw of it wasn't funny at all. (Baffler Meal was good though)
Most Underrated: Probably, Stroker and Hoop, it honestly isn't that bad people.
General Public:
Most Overrated: Robot Chicken, It and Aqua Teens are the only ASOs that have really gotten any recognition in the general public and Aqua Teens had about three good seasons worth of episodes atleast. (the first half of season 1 and last half of season 4 went from okay to horrible)
Most Underrated: The Venture Brothers, in real life I have only been able to find one person who even knows the show exists and he deemed it to be "okay."

The first season was awesome. I remember loving it back in 2002/3
It fell to mediocrity so quickly

I hear the comics are better, but that's probably not saying much
I hear the comics are better, but that's probably not saying muchI personaly wouldn't even bother, and the thing I hate most about that show is the character designs, there very sterotypical of anime ,the men look like fruits and the woman don't look that good either.

Most of Rumiko Takahashi's female characters all look the same. She dosent stretch her drawing abilities much.
Frankly, im tired of seeing anime with really big swords involved

I don't like her art work at all, the faces of her characters show little or no detail and what I stated before, all the men look fruity .
Frankly, im tired of seeing anime with really big swords involvedThats why I gave up trying to like it,among other reasons.

It could be worse. They could shout out their attacks before they perform them
Or do they do that anyway?
I havent watched in ages

If Rumiko made it a straight comedy like Ranma, it would've worked more
But the drama just comes off as cheesy and hard to watch

I never seen Ranma, and I don't think I will, but this as a comedy would probably work better because your right about the drama .

Ranma's alright. It has the the most numbskull characters i've seen since The Simpsons. Everybody just gets stupider and stupider as the show progresses
It's fun to watch(or in my case, read) nontheless

Japanese comedy really doesn't do it for me.

Japanese comedy really doesn't do it for me.I understand most of the references and cultural references in their comedies so I guess I "get it"
But Ranma's humor is mostly universal slapstick, not many cultural references
But Ranma's humor is mostly universal slapstick, not many cultural referencesYeah slapstick is defeinetly universal but anime has distinctive slapstick comedy that I really don't care for, its really dumb and isn't funny to me. I like Lupin III's comedy because its more western and they don't really have that "anime like" slapstick. And what really dosen't help is the lower quality animation of anime.

Er, since this is getting off-topic and has become a back-and-forth, could you take it to AIM or PM or something?
Also, I'd pretty much agree with RC/Tom comment.

I did recieve love. It's just that by the fourth season, a lot of fans just wanted it to end already. The Murphy episodes made the show classic and I know plenty of people who constantly quote the show.

Who honestly says that?
I think even the most vocal Sealab critics on this board have mentioned love for at least the first season (I Robot, Happy Cake, the bebop cola episode, the one with quinn and stormy constantly going back in time)

Most Overrated: Sealab 2021. I have tried watchig thus about a dozen times, and I never laughed once. I just didn't find it funny.
Most Underrated: THe Venture Brothers. I wasn't sure about this show when I first heard of it, but I have found it to be very well done, smart and funny. Can't wait for Season 2.

Robot Chicken gets another vote from me. It's basically like Saturday Night Live, which I guess is why it's the most popular AS original. It hits the mark sometimes, but overall it's very obvious humor. Take beloved children's characters, make them swear/have sex/do drugs/kill each other, repeat. Usually it's got a few good laughs even though you kind of know in the back of your mind that it's lame and obvious, and then once in a blue moon it's truly clever.

It is like SNL sometimes, but there are times where it's more like MAD-TV, especially in the violence/sex/drugs department.

Some of the Goz seasons were good, some blew. Or atleast thats my opinion.

Anyway. How are we gauging "overrated" and "underrated" again? Like, ratings? Or things people say about them on the internet? I'm not sure here.
Tom probably fits "underrated" in both categories, though.

Ripping Friends is underratedAnd for most, it might be deservedly so, considering the so-called ego of the creator (John Kricfalusi), although I do applaud John K.'s belief in that he created this because the idea of the "manly man" was dying out due to political correctness.
He should have just done it better.:)

Yeah, I was wondering that too. If we're going by the internet I'd say Venture Brothers is overrated. Everyone on the internet thinks it's the greatest animated work ever created. In real life though it gets the recognition it deserves(very little).

HORRAY FOR HYPERBOLE
Also, I know it's far from an AS original, but I always feel bad for Mission Hill. Very funny, very well written, and even on AS it never seemed to catch on as much as, say, The Oblongs did.

I thought everyone hated it. I dont think it even managed to create a cult following

It wasn't huge, but it was a pretty consistant ratings draw for a while.
Until recently, at least.

Overrated: Venture Brothers is by far the most overrated original. Everyone on this forum worships its every essence, when the show isn't good at all(read worst show in AS history)
Underrated: The Brak Show. Not perfect, but certainly a decent show that never really got its dues.
