Ok. It seems ANN is linking to this thread. For all those new people reading, please don't blow this out of proportion. They said they expect to air an upcoming series subbed and that's all they said. Not more than one series. Not that they absolutely guarantee it will. Not that they will offer alternative subtitled versions of their anime programming in addition to their dubs.
And a little fun fact, Adult Swim program director Kim Manning prefers her anime subbed.
----------------------------
WHO CAME: Kim Manning, Les Harper, Casey Willis, Ned Hastings, Jay Edwards, Hamid Raoof, Swimbuddha.
WHAT THEY SHOWED: Clips/trailers for Robot Chicken, Harvey Birdman, the ATHF Movie, Boondocks, Lucy, 12 Oz Mouse, Squidbillies, Perfect Hair Forever, Moral Orel, Minoriteam, Fullmetal Alchemist, GitS 2nd Gig, Samurai Champloo, Evangelion.
INTERESTING TIDBITS:
The "Lucy" pilot will premiere on Halloween. That's a Monday.
Moral Orel has been delayed to 2006.
Brak Show Vol. 2 DVD still up in the air.
12 Oz Mouse will now be 10 episodes.
Friday Night Fix will contain premiere episodes before they hit the air.
One anime series is expected to air subtitled. Series not mentioned.
Minoriteam will still air in 2006.
Definitely no more Mission Hill. Buy the DVD.
Inuyasha will stop at episode 126 this season. The rest won't be available until 2006.
Bruce Campbell, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt were approached to be the 4th Aqua Teen in the ATHF Movie. The character only has a couple lines. Cruise and Pitt both turned it down, and Bruce has yet to respond.
The ATHF Movie will be taken on a college tour to test it. Assuming how well it draws, it'll expand into more screens. They're making some 35 mm film prints for it.
If you're wondering how Adult Swim finally got Evangelion after all this time, it's the simple explanation that they kept asking ADV Films until they finally caved.
PRIZES GIVEN AWAY: Air fresheners, Sealab toys, Shake toys, things signed by Jackson Publick
Edit - I want to add a clarification about Friday Night Fix. They will NOT stream acquired programming (anime, Fox shows). They do not have the legal rights to do so. This may also apply to 3rd party produced shows like Home Movies and The Boondocks.
Edit 2 - Minoriteam villains:
The White Shadow, Racist Frankenstein, The Corporate Ladder, The Standardized Test, The Plant, The Black Cock, Fog, The Plant, Reverend Lord Chancellor Tyrone "Boom Boom" Saulsberry, Esq DDS, The Hot Stuck-Up *****, Captain Dixie, Madam Bangong

EDIT: Oh wait. That's right.

Well if they didn't mention which one, it means it is probably something they have not announced yet, and if they haven't announced it at Dragon*Con, they might at Anime Weekend Atlanta. Still though, if it is airing subbed, it must be some new liscence, or horrible dub. Perhaps Beck has gotten liscenced, and that will air subbed, or perhaps no one wants to hear the horrible English Shinji scream.

Wow. I'm surprised by the Friday Night Fix annoucement. I guess that puts it into "must watch" territory.
Subtitled anime on TV? I can already smell the otaku.
Not surprising they are going to milk Inu, though I suppose that may be more to do with Viz's dubbing process.
Even if Campbell doesn't sign on, I bet we'll still see a big name in that slot. And taking the movie directly to the masses to test it is an excellent plan. WS seems serious about making it a success. I can't wait to see the finished product.

The_Dominion might be onto something by mentioning Beck. Possible they have it planned seeing as a majority of what they talked about seemed to take place in 2006. And Beck isn't coming till then, so I say it's a possibility.

Subbed anime....now THIS will be something for the ages, no matter what anime it is!
My first thought was Eva. That seemed the most otaku-worthy of them all, so what the hell. Then I thought it might be a new anime series. There's a ton of possibilities there. Beck certainly seems like a likely choice, but who knows. We shall see...

The "Lucy" pilot will premiere on Halloween. That's a Monday.Cool, I'll probably watch.
Moral Orel has been delayed to 2006.I guess they had to make room, no biggie.
Brak Show Vol. 2 DVD still up in the air. They should have just made an ultimate collection and sold it at a bit of a higher price with extra content. All the fans (myself included) would have owned it by now. Dumb move on their part.
12 Oz Mouse will now be 10 episodes.Oh lord... this better have improved.
Friday Night Fix will contain premiere episodes before they hit the air.Now that's cool. I might have to check it out every now and then.
One anime series is expected to air subtitled. Series not mentioned. It's so going to be One Piece! Shonen Jump and Adult Swim are going to bring back "Pipeline." JK I have no clue what it'll be but I'm REALLY interested to find out. Ratings probably won't do too well unfortuantely. :(
Minoriteam will still air in 2006. No surprise.
Definitely no more Mission Hill. Buy the DVD.Okee Dokee. :)
Inuyasha will stop at episode 126 this season. The rest won't be available until 2006.Finish it faster damn it. I don't want it to be there for another year.

I'd also have to put my money on Beck for the reasons stated above.
Here's hoping the Aqua Teen movie comes to SFU!
12 Oz Mouse will now be 10 episodes. Why? The reaction was universally negative. It must cost almost nothing to make.

That's what they said. It's made with print paper, sharpies, and a scanner. It's pure profit. $$$ Jay Edwards had nothing but praise for it, saying it's a serial and it has a big payoff final episode.

Even if Funi dubs it, it might still be a pain in the butt to really make heads or tails of it, and given that it's really plot and character critical to keep the langauge split, they might have just said "screw it." Certainly wouldn't be surprised if Funi's already pitched it (cause jeez, everyone knows they've got the damn thing,) as a subtitle version, and AS just said "hey, this works right now. Let's try subtitles with this." Or maybe not. Beck is pretty darn niche. Awfully teen-centric too, but that's usually par for the course.
Of course, given the healthy relations CN's had with Sony and Dreamworks lately, dare I suggest Millenium Actress and/or Tokyo Godfathers? Certainly would be interesting flicks for CN to play with subs with.

I somewhat hope that the subed anime they picked up is City Hunter. Doubt it though. I have no interest in Beck, so if it is Beck...oh well.
Maybe Excel Saga (to avoid the F-bomb, make it stranger, etc)?
Y'know, I'd laugh if the "subtitled anime" was something like Panda Z where there was no dialogue to begin with. In fact, I'm willing to bet there's a case like that.

Oh. No one asked that. Due to Nielsen Media policy, they can't give out ratings numbers to the public that don't make a certain top X status, so we probably would've got an answer like "Fine." or "Well."

One anime series is expected to air subtitled. Series not mentioned.
I'm sure it's not Eva. That series needs the exposure to even do remotely well.
I'm betting the only series to air sub-only is a title that doesn't for various reasons have a dub and was or will be released sub only on DVD. The Macross Plus movie was released sub-only and being a Manga title it may have had to be liscensed with ROD as a package deal.
Definitely no more Mission Hill. Buy the DVD.
Good. As much as I like the series there's no reason to continue to show it when they've got so many new series to show and re-run. Besides, anyone who wants to watch it on televsion can see it on TBS' Friday Night block.
I somewhat hope that the subed anime they picked up is City Hunter. Doubt it though. I have no interest in Beck, so if it is Beck...oh well.

Hah, the day you can watch City Hunter on Adult Swim is the day you can tune to the Weather Channel and see a report on Hell being hit by a major blizzard.
I'm sure ADV pitched Excel everywhere. I'm betting that Williams Street either just downright hates it or ADV is asking too much. Even if CN wanted it they would air it dubbed. The series won't do well through a sub-only run no matter how crazy it gets.

And again, CN and Dreamworks are pretty friendly...
But that would mean airing Ghost in the Shell 1, which would be an issue due to female nudity and an overly foul-mouthed Manga dub.

Manga UK is having the entire SAC cast brought in to record a new dub. I could potentially see this happening, but I'm sure if a dub will be available AS would wait.
Dreamworks may not have the rights to the dub, though. Who knows? If this were to happen we're also pretty much guranteed the first film too right (never seen either so I don't know how necessary it is to watch one first)?
Millenium Actress was released sub-only too, but that wouldn't really seem like the kind of title Adult Swim would air. Tokyo Godfathers was also releaed sub-only as was Katsuhiro's Otomo's Memories and they were both released by Sony who also released Cowboy Bebop the Movie and Metropolis. Memories from the trailers I've seen would seem like an Adult Swim enough film to air and this may have had to be bought along with Metropolis to get Cowboy Bebop the Movie.
Y'know, I'd laugh if the "subtitled anime" was something like Panda Z where there was no dialogue to begin with. In fact, I'm willing to bet there's a case like that.
Thats like 5 mins an episode tho, aint it?

The only logical choice is: Reign the Conquerer subtitled!
Seriously though, I wonder if this is something they'll toss into the 5am hour. I don't think they really care about ratings at that hour and you can only run 26 episodes of Lupin 6 days a week so many times. Perhaps they'll do something crazy like airing a new batch of Lupin episodes, subtitled, at 5am. Just airing a subtitled series is pretty out of left field as it is.

Another mentionable item. The idea of an Adult Swim channel was brought up, and the usual answer was given. They all desire it, however they don't have the money, they don't have enough programming, they don't have the manpower, and the market is competitive enough. They said it would be at least two more years before they could even consider this a possibility.

Then why even waste money on it? They want to do this to see if a subtitled anime is actually a draw. So far, people can only speculate how well it would do on high profile television.

It's about time someone tried subbed anime on mass-market TV, to see if the conventional wisdom that subs don't sell actually holds true. I hope they air the sub series at a reasonable hour as a special event. And I hope they consider how legible the subtitles are in the series they pick. Sometimes you still encounter subbing done in a hard-to-read type style and color.
And it should be a series that requires few, if any, edits. Subbing appeals to the otaku crowd who would be intolerant of edits for TV. (^_*)

airing a subbed anime sounds like a last ditch effort to see if hardcore anime fans will bother to tune in since they've been finding it hard to draw anyone else in
