It was four years ago today that Adult Swim officially went on the air, Sunday, September 2, 2001. That initial lineup was Home Movies (the return of which I eagerly anticipate), The Brak Show, a Captain Linger long short, Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Sealab 2021, two reruns of Space Ghost Coast to Coast, and the first two episodes of Cowboy Bebop.
Here's to four years, and four years plus to come, AS.
(You know, next year we have to come up with a decent AS history, on which I've been working)

Wait...hold the phone...Home Movies is returning?! Do tell...(unless, of course, you're talking about the return of reruns)...

The latter. I was just getting really interested in it and they pull it. Oh well, it'll come back. It's one of those shows that keeps coming back, like InuYasha and Cowboy Bebop, right?

Captain Linger?

Captain Linger?Old short that used to air.
"A superhero (Captain Linger) flies around saving people, then hangs around making smalltalk."
It could actually be pretty decent.
Hoping for 4 more years of non-sequitor anime cheap cult fun.

Night one vet right here, and boy do I feal old!Same here. Man, its hard to believe its AS's anniversary again (and they haven't celebrated it again), let alone its fourth one. And only three shows left from its orinigal schedule, one of them in repeats. (And when they started doing the cards they were actually outright, laugh-out-loud funny and not just poor-to-mediocre and only occasionaly chuckle worhty like now.....)
But thanks to them, FG was revived! So its about even :D

Happy Anniversary, Adult Swim! I didn't watch it from the first day, but I did first watch it in the old people days.

Wow it sure dosen't feel like 4 years since AS Started. I've been heavily anticipating the block since hearing about it in a TV Guide article. It's kind of ironic though that throughout the 4 years of Adult Quality programming (most of the time anyway) that the only thing still aiirng from the first night is Harvey Birdman. But then again, everyone knows Bebop only had 26 episodes, I'm sure no one expected Home Movies to last as long as it did (due to it being a 5 episode only series at the time and then only finishing the first season and making the second in 2001), and Space Ghost has always been on and off on having new episodes or not. But I'm surprised Birdman's outlasted Brak (formerly the mascot of AS) and Sealab (if only due to how it took so long for Birdman to come out with new eps when compared to Sealab). Let's hope for another 4 happy years with AS continuing to push the bounty, and also hope for high quality premieres and the like.

I started watching adult swim in the summer of 2002 so I never saw much of that 1st year. I did see some demented Yogi Bear cartoon, im pretty sure that was a precursor to adult swim

Was I the only one who watched Pilot Candidate?

As to the Yogi cartoons, Spumco did a Yogi toon, one Ranger Smith, and one Jetsons. They aired on AS in '02.
As to Pilot Candidate, while I didn't watch it, you weren't the only one. I've been re-reading the threads from back in the day and it had some support. Not much, but some.

Heh, I remember the first night with the old people bumps.
Out of those shows, Bebop is still being rerun late at night, and out of the comedy, Birdman and ATHF are still making new eps.
I remember all those saturday nights with the Beginnings of Inuyasha and YYH, as well as the UC sidestory gundam shows.

Happy birthday, Ayy Ess!
I didn't watch from the first day...hell, I only started watching on the tip end of the safety manual era and then from the beginning of the B&W card era. So...I'm kind of an AS newbie, but whatever.
I look forward to another year of excellent programming. :D

*insert generic "Happy Birthday, Adult Swim!" here*
4 years I've watched, and I still remember it all. That first night...Home Movies, Birdman, Cowboy Bebop, Aqua Teens... Wow, has it really been that long? I still remember it all as if it were yesterday!
...GOD, I hated that Jetsons short, though...

I should note that the Yogi Spumco tunes aired a year before hand on regular Cartoon Network Fridays. I believe Summer of 2001 or something like that. Maybe summer 2000, somewhere around there.

Spumco also did another Yogi cartoon (centering on Boo-boo being picked on by other bears) that you could view on Adultswim.com before the design change.

I watched two episodes of it before giving up on the series. It was not done well enough/too late at night for me to care about.
Oh and I should note that ATHF's annivesary shouldn't be celebrated since it was not aired on the first night of Adult Swim, but rather the second (or third if you count the Thursday repeat). It is the only show to last as Long as Birdman, which is pretty cool. They're the only things to represent the first era now.

Somewhere Out There (in the garage most likely) is my VHS tape of Adult Swim's first night. With the TV-PG and TV-14 ratings permanently stuck for the entirety of every show.
Oh, to be 16 years old and enamoured of Cowboy Bebop and Space Ghost once again...

I have to admit to being pretty blown away by that night.
The big surprise for me was Cowboy Bebop. I didn't know anything about it and it turns out to be one of the best half hour animated series ever.
I saw Sealab 2020 when it originally aired, Jacque Cousteau was still going strong at that time, so...
I barely remembered that cartoon, but the idea that it's one year later and everyone has gone mad from living under water was a pretty good concept.
Birdman is a good show, but how many episodes aired back then?
Seems like it was quickly replaced by ATHF and disappeared for a long time.
The day after ATHF aired how many people were singing the theme, probably messing up the lyrics?
You know, I may not even had been aware of all the new programming that night. I could have just been tuning in to see SpaceGhost and got lucky.
I was watching Space Ghost before I even got Cartoon Network. I just kind of came across it at someones house and had them record it for me a few times untill my cable company finally picked CN up.

Speaking of cowboy Bebop four years after The Real Folk Blues(the song not the two parter and not severly shortned) closed the first night the movie will air tonight which premiered four years ago in Japan. It's also sad to know that only two shows from the first night are still going today

Some months before AS, SL2021 was sneaked into a wee smalls Boomerang airing, and everyone on Termite Terrace was like, wt*?
And as I recall, ATHF wasn't that popular to start with.
Oh, wasn't there just two eps of HBAAL that first season, or did it just seem like it?
I can remember back around a decade ago, really getting into SGC2C as well as Cartoon Planet. Who had any idea what WS had in store for us?

I was there on September 16th, when instead of airing Cowboy Bebop episodes 5 & 6, they aired some old cartoons about buildings. Not odd, considering 9/11 was 5 days old at the time.
Man, the memories. Waltz for Venus got removed from Bebop's running at a time. So did Cowboy Funk.

To think four years ago, I only thought Comedy Cental and MTV would be the only channels to air adult cartoons that weren't Family Guy or The Simpsons.... How things have changed for the best. Thank you Cartoon Network and happy 4th Adult Swim! I can't wait for you guys to be talked about in "I Love the 00s" when it hits VH1. :)

Four years and one day ago my television experience improved drastically. Seeing Cowboy Bebop on the air made me declare CN the number one network on television.
Then 2004 came and I started hating almost everything about CN. How times change.
We must all throw a grand celebration next year. Somehow.

Happy 4th Birthday Adult Swim! I don't believe I watched the premier night, but I did watch AS beginning in the first weeks. I remember the old people in the pool, the 18+ warnings before the shows, and really getting into Cowboy Bebop. That show is probably what got me so hooked into anime. The following year was unforgettable. It had great classic shows and some Toonami ports that leave a slight feeling of nostalgia.

I've been watching from day one too for both Comedy and Action. I still have my Home Movies and Brak Show first run tapes which have bits of promos for Sealab and the like.
Speaking of which I'd really like for Adult Swim to go back to the old pool style and the old action style as well.

Yes indeed. I loved that guy, he's right up there with Younger Toguro and Hiei as my favorite villains of the show. :)
BTW, I still wish Adult Swim would have kept Yu Yu Hakusho. I mean, is sCRYed, InuYasha, Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf's Rain, and Super Milk Chan anymore mature or better than that show? Oh well, YYH was doing fine on Toonami, now for them to actually finish the show.
