SAN FRANCISCO - Nintendo Co. Ltd. said Thursday its new puppy training game "Nintendogs" sold 250,000 units in its first week, making it the hottest-selling title in the United States.

Nintendo released the game, which allows players to choose, name and train their puppy, for its Nintendo DS handheld player Aug. 22.

The Nintendo DS, a dual-screen system, was released in November and had sold 1.97 million units in the United States as of July. Nintendo in mid-August cut the price of the DS by $20 to $129.99.

DS owners bought Nintendogs in just a week," said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.

Fils-Aime said "Nintendogs," which lists for around $29.99, and the recent DS price cuts are helping to drive sales of its new handheld player.I'm actually surprised it did that well...it seemed kind of hit or miss to me, but I guess puppies are just too cute...yay for Welsh Corgies!

I saw this game and it looked pretty interseting to say the least. I'm glad that's it's selling so well because I thought that it looked like a unique title. . .Anyway, I agree with you that it was going to be a hit or miss. Does it kind of remind you of an updated Gigapet(sp)? I remember those things a couple years ago.

I thought Americans would have taste and just completely ignore this idiotic (and potentially Animal Crossing levels of boring) looking "game".

Way to disappoint, America.

...How did THAT happen? I guess the kids want to popular with the ladies instead of watching basketball.

I had the extra store credit, so I went ahead and picked up a copy when I got Advanced Wars DS.

And believe it or not, it's actually GOOD! I was surprised how much I got into it. Naming your dog, teaching it tricks, and playing with them is far more engaging than one could first imagine. No where near as inane as it sounds!

My copy is: "Labs and friends!":anime:

It's this decade's Tamogotchi (sp?)

Ah. Tamogotchi...you lived like you died...lying in your own filth.

I wouldn't buy it, but as a big dog fan it seems kind of cool.

Although it would be better if there were a hologram projector so you could watch the "dog" roam around your house.

When I first heard about the game, I thought it would bomb. It sounds so much like a Tamagotchi to me, but well... I guess it has more to offer than I thought.

I can't imagine myself buying one of them, though (I'm still traumatized by my sister's Furby :D). Unless I found a "Boxer's Edition"... :anime:

Looks like a score for Nintendo. And they did it without following "the crowd" too. So.....nyaaah! :p

My store has been sold out of it since last week and we get people asking about it all the time. I didn't think the game would be this popular in the U.S., but I guess I was wrong, kudos to Nintendo.

Big surprise here. Japan's success carried over here. Good for Nintendo, I bet we can expect some new versions. Revolution Nintendogs? Cattendo? Nintenducks?

So, now that it is definitely a success, do we get to fight with Nintendogs in Super Smash Brothers Revolution?

Pembroke Welsh Corgi shall own Gannondorf and Pikachu.

And my PS2 would be better if it were a holodeck, and my car would be better if it were a teleporter. What's your point?

...yay for Welsh Corgies!Pembroke Welsh Corgi shall own Gannondorf and Pikachu. Agree.

I also have to back up that Nintendogs is a very good game. Even I, who was never a dog...or hell never an animal person, couldn't deny those puppy eyes. ;)

So, now that it is definitely a success, do we get to fight with Nintendogs in Super Smash Brothers Revolution? Sure, but what kind of moves would a Nintendog have? Frisbee catch? Roll over? :D

See? Nintendo can hang with the big boys.

Nintendo: Huh? Yeah! Suck on that, 3rd party! We don't need you... think you're so much better off... now who's feeling stupid?

To tell you the truth, I've never shown much interest in this game... unless they come out with a Cat version, then I'll actually buy a DS.

I got it back on Tuesday when it came out. I had played the demo before at Gamestop, and it was really cool so I picked up the game. It's good that it's selling so well.

Only a matter of time before we get Famicats after all the gushing Nintendogs has received. I hope to get a DS by the end of the year so I can get around to playing it.

Yeesh, chill out buddy. Innovation's not a dirty word, is it?

Sony is probably going to commission Rockstar to do a clone of the game called "RockDawgs," which is a more "street" version of the title, where you train your dogs to participate in dog racing, illegal Dog fights, and to be a Coke Mule.

Ofcourse, no touch screen and no microphone mean any clone version of it is gonna suck.

And while the Rockstar version has guest stars like that, the next Nintendo version will feature Bob Saget and Rivers Cuomo
