Man, how did I manage to avoid this series for so long? A couple weeks ago I picked up the first Resident Evil at a local Game Stop. As a fan of horror type movies, this series is right up my alley. I've been impressed with the mood that they managed to set...are the other games in the series comparable to this one? The only one I know even a little about is RE4 because I saw some articles on it in Nintendo Power.
I killed the giant plant and got the helmet key this evening. I'm a little disturbed that I still haven't moved on to the second disc. It doesn't look like there's much left unexplored at this point, but I suppose I can't be sure since I didn't know there was anything beyond the first mansion for quite some time. I've learned to dread getting new keys. It seems the monsters make a step up everytime I get one. :p
Anyway, I think I'll pick up some of the other games in the series in the near future. What got me interested after all this time? It's funny, but it was actually animations on flashplayer that make reference to RE games. lol

This is a great series. I've completed RE0-4 and Code Veronica. I reccommend you play all of those when you can. My favorite of course is 4, and you'll see a crazy difference from the previous games when you play it. It's still the same great action and survival though.
Also the one I always see forgotten is the origin, Resident Evil Zero. It was a great game with a new team up concept (plus, you don't have to keep putting items back in the box if you don't need them, this time you can just drop them.) That game is really fun and really interesting. It also introduces a new character by the name of Billy, someone I'm hoping will return soon. Right now, that one is only on Gamecube, but I'm sure in the future will see it released on other consoles or perhaps a pack-in for a future RE (perhaps 5 or 6?)
Oh yeah, Nintendo DS is getting a Resident Evil. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence (get it! DS. :D) Basically it's the re-released of RE1 only they've added some touch screen elements for puzzle solving, using a knife, and cleaning blood from the screen. http://www.the-magicbox.com/0508/game050829c.shtml
Sorry, but I can go on for quite awhile on this series. :)

Did you get the new Gamecube version? Or the old PS version? The old PS version is a true gem because it's got hilariously bad acting and dialogue. "The Master of Unlocking!" or "You were almost a Jill Sandwich!"
However, Resident Evil 2 is a fave because they made Claire Redfield into Ellen Ripley. Then they turned her into a simpering wuss in later RE's. Steve...Please!

Speaking of Claire and Steve, some of you might be amused by this particular flash. It's by no means on my top ten list as far as flash animations go, but it has its moments:
http://www.flashplayer.com/animation/codeveronicaflashedition_movie.php#bottom
On the topic of the games again, it was the Gamecube version that I bought. I guess I'll miss out on the cheesy voice acting. I have noticed that many of the cutscenes are a little choppy. I'm wondering if it's the game itself or if my GC is going out on me.
I considered getting Resident Evil 0 first, but I decided to go in the order that they were released instead. I don't have too many complaints about this first installment. I'll admit that I don't care for the controls very much, but I've slowly adjusted to the point that I only occassionally get stuck for 3 minutes trying to walk around the side of a piece of furniture. :p
There's only one game related issue that comes to mind:
I don't quite understand the motivation of the monster in chains that you first meet in that shed way back in the courtyard. I mean...it knocks me out, then waits for me to get up before attacking again? I took some unnecessary damage because I was debating whether I should shoot it or not that first time. Perhaps more will be explained in time. I see that Wesker mentioned it in one of his notes and it's no longer out in the shed (I checked). In other words, be careful not to ruin it for me since I assume I'll be seeing it again. lol
I think part of what kept me from this series so long is that I didn't realize so many of them were actually on the Gamecube. Yes, I know that they're currently claiming that RE5 won't be on the Rev...but time will tell. :anime:

Ahh, the sucky love story problem. Would you say that Claire/Steve is better or worse than Jack/Rose in Metal Gear Solid 2? I think Jack/Rose will always have the top spot with me as far as irritations go. I always skip those codec conversations for fear that I'll go out and buy a gun so I can put a bullet through my television. :p

I've watched my cousin play it many times before, but never really played it myself, I just remember that he was pissed at the end of Veronica X because he thought he was gonna face the boss the the girl but they kept the guy and he had no weapons, it was kinda funny. But I'm planning on trying it out, I was gonna get RE4 for my cube, but I think I'll get RE0 first so I have a little backstory.

I prefer Konami's Silent Hill series because you have unlimited time to accomplish tasks. I have Resident Evil File 2 and I can't beat a single level due to tight time limits. Even though SH is a rip off of RE.

The original Resident Evil is one of my favorite games ever. It's so damn spooky! It takes balls to play that thing alone in the dead of night with all the lights out. Every time I heard the sound of zombies somewhere in the distance it made my skin crawl. It's OK when you have tons of ammo but when you run out - YIKES!! I'd be sweating bullets opening that next door with only one round left.

You are WRONG!! Wanna know why I'm the self-proclaimed Nemesis Queen and that many ask me for help with Nemesis? Here's proof:
Choose to jump off the bridge. Once at the communications links room, either fire back or negotiate with Nicholai. Once you do either or, Carlos will run in and ask what happened and get worried that he's going to die in Raccoon City. When Carlos tries to get someone to help, leave the room via the door you walked in and walk back in and listen.
After the final fight with Nemesis, the chopper will come in the rescue both Carlos and Jill. Guess who's flying?
You never jumped off the bridge to the Dead Factory?

I know what you mean. At this point, I'm getting used to the spookiness of the mansion, but it wasn't that way at first. The first few times I came across a staircase I would think, "I'm NOT going up/down there."

Most of the Resident Evils don't have severe time limit tasks. They usually gave you plenty of time too.

The 2nd disc holds very little with regards to Resident Evil's 1 and 4. Don't expect to change discs until you get to the very last act of the story. If the Gamecube discs were just slightly bigger, they wouldn't need to hype these as a two-disc product.
I've beaten all of them except Zero, and I just beat the remake and code: veronica over the summer. If you're itching to get the rocket launcher in the remake, there's a very good walkthrough at gamefaqs that breaks the game down into 29 "missions" where you can save after completing every task.
Oh and yea, the game's cutscenes are somewhat choppy. It's not your cube.

Oh and if you haven't seen the movies yet don't bother. Personally, I didn't dislike the first movie (wasn't grade A though) but RE: Appocalypse is so awful. It's a dissapointment to everyone who played RE3 (at least it should be.)

Never played File 2. The fact that when you're attacked your life starts dropping twice as fast doesn't help the matter. And when you're on the ground points tick like seconds, even though there are only 100 from the beginning. Also your friends don't heal you at all, even if they're doctors they don't use herbs to make medicines.

I had a feeling that this was going to be one of those swap-discs-right-before-the-end types of deals. The only other possibility I could think of was that each character used a different disc. speaking of that, I'm playing through as Chris right now. Is it actually worth it for me to play again as Jill? If I remember right the manual says you'll experience a "slightly different" story.
It's good to hear that the cutscenes are choppy in the game and not because of my cube. Good for the cube anyway. Somewhat bad for the game. :p
I think I'm nearing the end but I'm not sure:
Last night I met that freakish thing that has its hands chained up two more times. The second time was in an area call the "altar." I had just figured out what to do when it knocked me into the pit. I had just saved recently so I called it quits for the night after that (it was 1 AM or so). I almost feel bad for that thing since it sounds like it was a little girl at one point and it has probably been like that since the 1960s (according to the records I've seen in the game). It makes me want to save it, but I'm betting that won't happen. I suppose I'll find out tonight. :crying:

What's interesting about the Resident Evil timeline is that the "official" ending for the first installment is a combination of Chris and Jill's stories. So yeah, it's worth experiencing both. Each character's ending has multiple variations, depending on
if you find/install all the optional MO discs and rescue Jill/Chris, if your support character Rebecca/Barry is killed, and the choice you make while fighting Lisa/hearing scream

***Be careful as there may be some minor spoilers in this post. I don't feel like being creative and finding a way to fit them all in spoiler tags.***
Well, I bet the game with Chris tonight. I guess some people think that chained up thing was named Lisa? I was under the impression it was once some girl named Jessica........I could be wrong though since there's so many names thrown at you in that game. Perhaps it will be clearer to me when I play through with Jill (not sure if I will right away or not...).
Rebecca didn't die for me. I'm curious though: when could she actually die? I know I saved her from one of those lizard man looking things once on the second floor of the mansion... The only other place I could think of is that final fight after you signal the helicopter...can the support character die there too?
I saved Jill before I left as well, so she was there for the ending (didn't help much in that final battle though :p ).
I'm curious about something though. Last night I tried to fight the creature in Chains in the Altar room and it actually knocked Wesker into the pit. I got knocked in a little later so I called it quits for the night. Tonight I managed to finish that battle without Wesker falling. I wonder what would have happened if he had fallen... Then again, I wonder if I could win without him. It seemed that his shots helped to get the job done....
I have a question about one spoiler that someone gave. They said:
if you find/install all the optional MO discs and rescue Jill/Chris, if your support character Rebecca/Barry is killed, and the choice you make while fighting Lisa/hearing scream I know how I came out on those first two items, but what exactly is being referred to with that third item? Can you pass the altar room without killing the creature in chains? As I've said before, I didn't really want to kill it, but after it fell I decided to just keep going (It was an accident really...since I thought at first that the creature had to knock the big stones into the pit).

That's the part, I would've clarified except it would've been spoilery. As Chris, when you hear Rebecca scream in the mansion, you have the option of not saving her. If you don't, Rebecca won't be around to set off the self-destruct system, and you'll leave the mansion without it blowing up (which is considered the "poor" ending).
In Jill's game, during the fight with Lisa you can make a certain plot-related choice that will also bring about the above-mentioned outcome. However, in Chris's game nothing will change if Wesker falls into the pit.
And yeah, Rebecca and Barry can be killed in the final tyrant fight. Takes a bit of standing around and doing nothing though.

I really need to play RE4 sometime. But a combination of disappointments (REC:V and RE0, which sucks since Claire and Becky are two of my favorite characters) and the fact I just plain don't feel like going and hooking my Gamecube up has stopped me.
And on a slightly different note, I'm getting quite sick of RE1 remakes. I mean, the game was fun enough but why not give them to the other ones? RE3 being updated like that would be so ridiculously awesome.
Oh, and I wish they'd bring Nicholai (my favorite RE character) back. They can bring lame ol' Wesker back but not the badass Russian? Bah!

I remember I had just gotten into that room with the crest on the door when I heard her scream from the floor above me. Of course, being the caring hero that I am, I finished searching the room before I went up to find her. :D
However, in Chris's game nothing will change if Wesker falls into the pit.So Wesker can fall into the same pit that would kill me and still show up in that big room on B4 of the basement?
Well, I guess would expect someone who wears sunglasses at night in a zombie-filled mansion to be totally hardcore. :anime:
Yes, you can get past Lisa without actually killing her. All you have to do is push the four stones on each corner off the ledges and the coffin in the middle will open revealing the skeleton of Lisa's mother. Lisa will then hop over to the coffin and grab the skull and scream "MOTHER!" and then jump off the ledge herself.

There's only really been one "remake", and thats the enhanced Gamecube version. The rest are all various ports that added easy mode, dual shock, etc. I'd be interested in knowing if the upcoming DS version is an exact port, or retains elements from the remake (better voice acting, new rooms, etc).

Easy is always available on the original (PSX) version of Nemesis. RE 2 already has a dual shock version before it got released on the GC.
The PS 2 versions of DC's CV has Wesker's report (if you pre ordered it) and more scenes. So does the GC port excluding Wesker's report.

There was plenty I could pick apart regarding the first RE on the Gamecube, but all in all I enjoyed it enough to overlook the smaller imperfections.
