It was rumoured before, but IGN's non-review (http://cube.ign.com/articles/647/647184p1.html) pretty much confirms it. I don't blame the guy for not knowing anything about One Piece edits, but his casual mention of Chaser and Sanji's lack of cigarette in that pic say it all. Plus if there was a Japanese audio track it would probably come up in the review.

Ah well. Just one less game to buy for me.

I'm not surprised at all by this. I think the show is dead in the water. No pun intended.

No surprise, really. Even edited, it still looks like a fun game. I might just pick it up.

Did they change the gameplay at all? That's the only thing that matters for fighting games. It'd be kind of sad to import a 70 dollar version with outragious shipping over a lack of cigars.

Well they seemed to have edited out a couple of chracters from the first GB. I don't know who exactly, but my guess is anyone not shown on the 4Kids version.

There's no way i'm buying it. Screw you, 4Kids.

Anime games aren't exactly known for their stellar gameplay. Being edited will only hurt in the long run.

Anime games aren't exactly known for their stellar gameplay. But this one is. It's one of the better fighting series on the market today. If you like Power Stone and Super Smash Brothers, you'll love this game. Then again if you'd rather suport Toei from the source and not fund 4Kids, I suggest imporing GB3 at Lik-Sang.com Atleast they have free shipping.

I still haven't gotten a straight answer on this one... Which Japanese game did they edited to make this? The first Grand Battle or Grand Battle Rush?

I think I'll rent it first but I really love silly fighting games so I might just buy it and hope I can live with the awful voices.

And honestly Jack... it's not cigars. It's the missing characters and the lack of Japanese audio that will turn off One Piece fans. As for casual fans... not enough would buy the game. So they basically shot themselves in the foot (as usual). But I've been buying all the new TMNT games so I've given 4kids plenty of my money already. If the game is still fun as is then I'll probably buy it as well because I want a One Piece fighting game even if it's edited and I don't want to deal with the faulderall of importing and buying a Free Loader.

I don't mind 4Kids Entertainments dubs. I don't care if you hate me or not now. I admit it. I like 4Kids Entertainment. I don't see what's the big deal. All of the things that they make in their dubs are completely understandable (besides the name dubs).

I will be buying One Piece: Grand Battle for GameCube. I just got the demo for the PS2 in my Shonen Jump.

No they aren't and they never will be. 4kids fails at logic. But you can like them if you want. To each his own. I for one think they did a great job with TMNT and GI-Joe seems alright as well. But their animes... I'll watch SK and MMP gladly and suffer through OP sometimes.

The presence of Arlong, Kuro, Kreig and Buggy as playable characters indicate that it's Rush with later characters removed (Aokiji, Foxy Enel and perhaps Wiper [i'm not positive he was in Rush])

Also, all of the Foxy minigames are in it, but narrated by Usopp now.

For everyone who's curious as to what Grand Battle game is being edited here's an interesting interview.

Interview with Bandai (http://www.gamedaily.com/animegamehub/article.asp?section=feature&article_id=729)

I'm not buying this game either with the annoying dub voices and the rap theme playing everytime I'd turn it on. I might rent this once but $5 is all I'm going to spend on this game.

And the demo had a non-vocal version of believe playing in the background, so we may be saved from the One Piece rap.

According to XPlay's preview they include the rap.

It sounds a bit more like they didn't edited it down but they put it together using pre-existing pieces. I guess that could turn out to be the same thing.

Well drag... but I might still get it if it's fun.

On one hand there's a certain amount of temptation because the graphics do look pretty good, and most of the game is still intact. But just the removal of cigars and renaming of Smoker kill it for me, because the game is being edited to 4Kids stupid standards instead of the slightly looser shonen jump ones.

Really makes me afraid that Smoker will become Chaser in the english manga now. If that happens then my interest in any english-related one piece material will be over.

I wonder if the editing of ciggies is reflective a new trend in japanese games, or at least the ones by Bandai....

The reason I say this is because the japanese version of the Cowboy Bebop game has no ciggeretes in it at all. Even "TANK!" has been edited to get rid of the ciggies.

Slightly. Sanji still smokes in Shonen Jump, and there's blood. A little goes a long way.

GD: I noticed there are quite a few One Piece fans who prefer the original Japanese character names and voices. Will there be an option for the original Japanese voices and character names in this game, or in future One Piece titles in the US?

Tanaka: I'm sorry, it's impossible. Basically, the game was built only for the US market, so that means the Japanese voiceovers and characters don't exist.
That burns me, plenty of Anime tie-in games released by Bandai come with optional Japanese tracks (Gundam and dothack come immediately to mind)
That quote just smears of 4kids filth all over. How hard is it to just LEAVE IT IN THERE FOR THE PEOPLE THAT GIVE A DAMN most kids won't even venture inot that menu, and even if they more than likely wil only change the language for a quick giggle.

In the end, people don't buy licensed games for gameplay. If a game is good, that's great, but if it's stuck with a license you don't like...

I played the Grand Battle demo that came in this month's Shonen Jump for a bit (Luffy vs. Arlong!).

The intro had an instrumental We're! remix, and the title screen was a Heart of Map remix-instrumental.

No rap.

No rap.Yeah, I mentioned that earlier in the thread. (but wasn't the song playing during the intro a remix of "Believe" or was it some sort of fusion of the two songs?)

That Bandai interview stated that the game was built specifically for the U.S. market. Does that mean Bandai made an all new Grand Battle game just for the U.S.?

Yeah, and the edit scenes suck. However, this may turn out to be a pretty fun game. After all, the Ultimate Muscle games released for Gamecube and PS2 were suprisingly fun in the multiplayer modes! :)

That one's actually pretty good, from what I've played of it. Simple baseball gameplay but lots of trademark character animations make it fun.

Problem is one entire team is based on the Skypeia cast, so they better reach that point before they try and release this.

One of my anime club members brought this game to the meeting the other night and I must say, name changes aside, this is a really, really fun game!

The controls are easy to use, the voice acting is superb, (yes, it is the 4Kids actors but they really brought out their full potential for this game. Even David Moo sounded tolerable as Sanji for once! ) and the graphics and animation are as smooth as they could be. There are a lot of great moves and surprises you could pull off in this game. I especially love the fully animated super moves you could pull off with your characters. :)

The only real beef I have with this game: no 4-player mode. This is strictly a one-on-one power stoneesque battle game. If there was a 4 player option, it would've made the game a real party pleaser! I hope that if a sequel gets released, it will include this feature.
