View Full Version : I'm surprised that the Adventure genre hasn't taken off on the DS

The point and click adventure games I'm talking about, Like the Myst/Uru series and the games that have been released by The Adventure Company. Really I may be in the minority here, but I throughly enjoy these types of games. I mean many of the level designs are extremely well done and detailed as well. The interface for the PC is pretty much mouse controled so the Stylus could be an attiquate substitue, the touch screen could also serve as the inventory screen. Heck I hope that Lucas Arts decides to re-release some of their old titles like the Monkey Island series, Sam and Max, and The Dig.

I mean the Lucas Arts games can't run on Modern PCs now...

Trace Memory comes out in October, I think.

The Adventure Company has been a huge disappointment in mine eyes to be honest with you. Admittadly, much of that has been their execution, not the game play or storylines, so if they were able to pull of a better running port to the DS, I'd be in line.

For the record, when the first rumblings of the DS touchscreen abilities were heard, my gaming buds and I were giddy with the prospect of Maniac Mansion and other LA games being portable, not to mention easy to run without having to break out the older pcs, running emulators or fighting for hours with sound/vid cards.

Many of them can be run under Windows XP. If not, you can always download the SCUMM emulator and it should run any Lucasarts games you own. I still play Monkey Island and Indiana Jones from time to time.

Can 1-3 be played on Windows XP without any 3rd party software?

I have a CD compilation of Monkey Island 1 + 2, so I basically play it off the CD with no problems. For Monkey Island 3, I installed it, played it, and had no problems. I have Windows XP. Most of the Lucasarts games that were for Win95 pretty much work on my XP without any emulators.

I used to have Windows NT, and I had some problems running Monkey Island 3. If you google your problem you should be able to find tips. I remember I had to delete a pesky NT protection file or something, but that was it, and it worked.

I downloaded a SCUMM emulator to play my DOS-only Lucasarts games. Any game that uses the SCUMM system, which is just about all the Lucasarts games, pretty much work on it. This is the only 3rd party software I can recommend that is really very easy to use and download. Won't take you more than 5 minutes to download and configure if you have any connection better than dial-up (and I have dial-up, and I still found it easy!)

It'd be awesome if Lucasarts brought its old adventuring classics back.

Not sure if the later games (heavy on speech, and even FMV) could be ported though.

Adventure games are a hard-sell in today's market.

There is actually a version of SCUMM being (unofficially, of course) ported to the DS, so that you will be able to simply download your LucasArts games onto it and play them with the touchscreen.

an updated "maniac mansion" would be awesome or even a port of the original would be good

Too bad LA doesn't care much for portable consoles anymore since they did games for GBC.

There is a fan updated version of Maniac Mansion floating around the web. It's really good.

No, those were handled by outside developers.

They are, however, working on a PSP version of Battlefront II.
