1.THE FLINTSTONE FLYER 9/30/1960
Wirtten by Muchael Maltese.

(NOTE-this is one opf the only episodes to have no guests stars and to have just the core four..Allan Reed,Mel Blanc,Bea Benadaret & Jeannie VanderPyl)

This was not the first made but the first boradcast. In it, Barnye is first trying to impress Fred, then he builds a eggbeater looking vehicle, appararatus, the now famous "Barney Copter" which Fred notices and prompty RENAMES trhe title flyer. They then use it,after a few mishaps, and lands our fat heor in traction, to go to the bowling tourney while the girls got to the grnad opera where the boys are SUPPOSED to be! (The conveince of being sick worked out well..). However the girls go randomly, mind you,to the SAME bowling alley where our boys are going, and they see it and lay low and then disguise themselves (taking the "brushes"" off of some old-fashioned push brooms-Barney Rubble: "Whatta time to get NEAT".) The wives are fooled but at home Barney's still disgusied face, whuich the girls recongize, give 'em away!! Therefore the gals chase the guys on the eggbeater, and wait for our bosom buddies who are sitll on that darn Flinstone Flyer.

NOTE: Swell Mel Blanc/Allan Reed "in character disguisng their own voice" when they do the accent "take a powder"). This is the first use of Yabba Dabba Doo. Alan Reed suiggested it.

2.HOT LIPS HANGIGAN 10/3/1960
Written by Warren Foster

Guest star: JERRY MANN (Hot Lips, various) (the cast do additional roles,as do Mann)

When Fred and Barney are looking for things to do, jmnust to amuse themselves, Fred eventually borrowes his friend's trampoline! He then jumps up to the urban multiple story beauty salon where the wives are and spy Fred boucning. During the ensuing Wilma tirade, Fred then produces a magic booth which during a show at home he makes the girls "disappear", so he can see his old big band buddy Hot Lips Hangigan, who's now doing cool & hot jazz. The woman disgusie themselvwes as teenagers. (Dig that "modern bobysoxerr lingo" coming from bea Benadaret and jeannie vanderpyl). They then track Fred and Barney down after hoverhearing their sinsiter polt.. The banderleader, anb old college friend IIRC of Freddy's, lewt's him and Barney join, much to the evneutal teen apprecation. Wilma and Betty retrieve their husbands and ambush the "beatnik". They then "magically" reappear in the booth and a la Fred and Barney above in the previous..(see notes!)give themselves away.."You're the MOST".

NOTES:
As neoted, the first two use martial-fooling,confounding disguise, first by the boys and thgen next time by the girls.

HOT LIPS is an old 1920s jazz song by Paul Whiteman with his top trumpeter Henry Busse who wrote it.he later, and fellow bandleader, dance matser Horace Heidt had a 1930s remake.

Cool, f extremely dated, "golden smog"(Mel Torme Vlvet Fog referencing here) slang.

Jerry Mann (1910-1987) would be a part of the 1960-1962 FLITNSOTNE voice team,if not HBV entirely. Heard in Wb,MGM,and Lantz shorts by many reports, he's lsited on the retro-fit creduits by industry regular Earl Kress (a writer on tthe rare 80s classic, Tex Avery and H-b'S 1981-1982 CBS series KWICKY KOALA) but if listed on the original episodes's deidcated credits, he's eliminated in rerun credits (made to encompass the later, but much more familair, FLINSTOEN theme..you know.."Meet the Flinstone.") He channels both Louis Prima (who would sing for HB Records and the 1966 FLINSTONE movie, MAN CALLED FLINTSTONE..just like a show to end with a movie) when siinging and adressing the audience with hipster slang and like Ed Wynn when addrwessing the boys for Hot Lips, and that's not to mention his other minor roles here. He'd do Phil Sivlers for Dino and even for animated Bilko (Phil's character) on this show and do (a la Ed Wynn again) Mezo the hypnotist and the one time that he's Dino (THE SNORKASAURUS HUNTER), the cameo grocer who's got a bronto bone to pick with Flinstone.)

3.THE SWIMMING POOL 10/10/1960
Writer:Joe Barbera

Guest Stars:
BILL THOMPSON (Chief),DAWS BUTLER (The Cop), MEL BLANC(The swimming store cleark), HAL SMITH (the Angry Neighbor) and MIKE RYE aka RYE BILLSBURY (Charlie, Fred' pool friend).

The very first Flintsotne done, with footage leftover from THE FLAGSTOJNES (the show's pilot but dropped due to trademark conflicts with Chic Young, the creator of BLONDIE and co--creator of HI & LOIS,whod' used the Flagstones as a BLONDIE family name) ) with Hal Smith,Bill Thompson,June Foray and Daws Butler. In it, Barneya nd Fred are starting to fight when Fred's ofund out the hard way that Barney has a pool dug. The two disupte soon over how to use it and Fred while buying a floating ring toy (form a guy with Mel Blanc's Marvin Martian voice form CHuck Jones's 1950s Warner shorts, also sued among others,in Friz Freleng's caroton, the Oscar-Winning BIRDS ANONYMOUS (1957), a concept that would be altater FLINSTONE title), finds that the YMCA's been given the pol, so Fred naturally and literally WALKS over the guys there..and his weright does not sink them. He then over hears Wilma during hsi brithday planning a pool warming party and invites a pool buddy Charlie over to wear a joke cop suit,..but then Wilma suprrisess Fred..with a BIRTHDAY cake that night. And betty and barney (whopse idea,as Wilma says, this was) are there. That night forgetting about his plan to ruin the party, the gang have a party that rbings on a neighbor's clal the police during which time Charlie's over (not being ABLE to find the cop suit Fred asked him to wear!!)
and a REAL cop like the one that Charlie isa suppsoed to dress as, arrive. Fred, naturally, thinks this is Charlie, mbouncing the real cop in the poo.SO where's Charlie? The real deal comes true and Fred gets, by the dunken cop, taken to the cop staiton where he is charghed and incarcerated. Forutnately Fred can always counbt on barney to spring him. But barney's empoyted the pool, and forget to fill it(and to inform Fred who once AGAIN finds out the hard way)!!
Rye Billsbury aka Mike Rye was a longtime radio voice of the Lone Ranger and reprised the voice for Format FIlms's (THE ALVIN SHOW and ROADRUNNER) 1966-1967 LONE RANGER,which had Doug Young,Jante Waldo,Herbert Vigran,Hal peary and other Hanna-barbera regulars.

NOTES:
before Yabba Dabba Doo, Fred screamed Yahoo.
This was, we we know,a pilot with different voices, but a few surived. Some interesting guests stars like Bill Thompson, the voice of Droopy, as a irish cop..(see above.)
Mel Blanc does his marvin the martain voice for the salesman ehre.

4.NO HELP WANTED 10/17/1960
Written by either Warren Foster or Mike Maltese

Giest Star:FRANK NELSON (Rocky Stone, Edgar Boulder)

Fred Flinstone has been told by Wilma tog et Banrye a job at least,if not a business, so sets him up with Edgar Boulder, a friend of his (named after Edgar Bergen? No ventriloquist this character),whi atfer a game that ends in Fred losing, still results in Fred getting banry a job with mr.Rocky Stone, who winds up sending banrye after Fred's TV set.Fred spends an entire 17 minutesa o ro trying to retrive it bakc from Barney.

NOTES:Frank Nelson (b.Denver, Colorado, May 9, 1911, died Sept.12,1986), was one of the funniest character acotrs ever and remains so with me.Famed for saying EYESSS on radio, he does two voices..here, the ones mentioned.

Some great gagsa including a Mel Blanc voiced floorwlaking weeping that p[eople ask him for stupid sutff when Fred wants to find (referencin g Barney, who went off with his TV wearing it like amartian get up) if a little man with a head like a television screen just came in there.
Dino makes an appearance here. (???????????? He debuted in SNORKASAURS HUNTER which was produced later.)

5.THE SPLIT PERSONALITY 10/24/1960
Written by Warren Foster.

Guest star:HOWIE MACNEAR (The vet),MEL BLANC (barney's friends and his and Fred's bowling buddies)

Barney comes in, asking for both a car "whoozit" (don't ask) and catcus cola..FRED's Fred swaggers in oin this hot Bedrock day, finds out said beverage is goen and is about to throttle Barney when he sees it only it is car polish.Finding out is one of the only frigthenging things..his drinking it is not what hurts him>Another things that does is his panic causes him to accidentally hit himself on the head with it.Knocked out, he is dragged by the Rubbles to Wilma. A Doc comes in to help but doesn't get aorund toi Fred and hearing of a hit with a bottle thinks WILMA did it,then Wilma yells in his ear-after whcih he ID's himself a a vet.Fred wakes up and is now a aristocratic sophistcate. This si good only it makes him the idol (much to the detriment as we'll soon see of other guys) of women. Fred playing an opera 78, and annoys the heck out of Barney indirectly when Betty uses "Fredrick" as a ideal--while he regales Wilma with lampshade and similiar) party pictures. At the bowling alley, the "new guy" annoys bowlers when bartney's ther, eboth without then with Frericjkl;. A knock on the head agian, though, restores his memory. and Voice. And how does it hasppen? An "accidental" flaling boulderr.

NOTES:
What about after the bowling folks think that is is still Frederick..even after afterwards, even though this si their odl friend FRED..(rememebr he showed up and said FREDERICK).Maybe they didn't cathc on that the two were ona nd the same.If they DID fidn out & clobber him,. would the slugs on his noggin rstore the "Frederick"
Perosna?:p Would he still be Fred Flinstone but still have a lot of explainging to do? :D

Howard MacNear (1905-1969), was a longitme raido and ANDY GRIFFITH character actor, going "yes, OOOO" as Floyd the Barber on the latter. he wouldbe imitated later by John Stepehnson perhaps due to conflicts network and program-wise.

6.THE MONSTER FROM THE TAR PITS 10/31/1960
Writer: Forgotten momentarily

Guest stars:JERRY MANN (Producer,Director),JOHN STPEHNSON(All other males)
The one showing now. Fred and the gnag do Hollywood foir the first time. When Cary Granite (a take off on the great British light comic actor Gary Grant, 1904-1987, Doris Day and Marilyn Monroe's oft-leading man of the day and earlier) and imiated by later FLINSTOEN, and longtime UPA veteran JERRY HAUSNER in DICK TRACY (UPA) at thsi time as Hemlock Holmes, a crime sol, ving bulldog, arrives to make a flick, Hi director insists on a double and after the boys follow the girls to Hollyrock while Fred disses celeb worship picks Fred to boulde as the moinster form the tarpits, so Fred (somewhat like the later Daffy Duck in his better moments..) is all too proud to stnad in! Between his ego and lakc of timing, he missed the audition, but he sees another gig for him at episode's end!!

NOTE: The director oif this (voiced in a Teutonic vein by actor JERRY MANN would play the Hans Conreid/John Barrymore/Jerry Collona like ham.con man Mssr,Monty GYpsum,. this time with a new voice, (voiced by WALKER EDMISTON). Fred is full of ego even for him. Fred, by7 his stnadardss her, still might care for showbiz gossip about Brad (Tar)Pitt, Angelina(saursas) Jolie, and Jennifer Aniston(e0.

SWELL gag about a cop (for this first time for anyone hre, alreayd na old caroton gag)-swearing off cheap food.

And the "We'll use real ones" gag and others. Distributed by Columbia on home movie as FOR THE LOVE OF FRED before Warner Bros.Home VIdeo brought it back in its original title.

JOHN STPOEHNSON made his debut as a FLINSTONE voice. He would be later a voice for MR.SLATE,JOE ROCKHEAD nasd other FLINSTOEN characters and still later for other Hanna barbera characters.

8.THE BABYSITTERS 11/07/1960
Written by Warren Foster

Guest stars:PAUL FREES (Mr.Granite,Barney's boss), MEL BLANC (dog), JEAN VANDERPYL (Eggbert), BEA BENADARET(his mom), DAWS BUTLER (Joe Rockhead and others)

Barney can't be with fred as he neds to babysit Little Eggbert, a neihbior's rugrat. Fred hates him, especiallysince this pre-empts his watching the fights, but the three agree to stay, letting the tyke's family dog help. Barney's boss agve him the ticks but when they couldn';t go he tore the tickets but then Joe Rockhead's hosue comes into play. Their scamp-adventures wind them first at the fights then at Joe Rockhead's house, and then in jial,Rockhead wins up there too.

NOTES:Joe Rockhead, voiced by Daws Butler, makes his first appearance hujere, later voiced by HB mainstay John Stpehenson. Daws sued Joe E.Brown as the model for the voice as he;'d do for Lipopy the Lion and later for peter Potamus there.here is he a punchdrunk.
Funniest is when Fred thinks that Wilma is pregant with him. This is the first occurance of a baby in the Flinstone household

PAUL FREES,b.June 27,1920,Chicago,Illiniois,died Nov.1,1986, voiced Barney's boss,on of the few times that Frees, a regular of almost any studios except Warner Bros.(though he was in INCREDIBLE MR LIMPET as Don Knott's crustecean pal Crusty the Crab and in BELLS ARE RINGING which is WB IIRC doing voices and in the WB/UPA film GAY PURREE),and excpet Filmaiton and Bill Melendez, for which he NEVER was featured, but was more often at most other, incolduign many Rankin Bass, King Features and Hollywood studio shows such as Jay Ward's Boris Badenov and Disney's Ludwig Von Drake.he's also done commercials--Pillbuiry Doughboy in 1960s and many Disneyland attraction, most notably HAUNTED MANSION,TIKI ROOM and almost all of the pirates in PIARTES OF THE CARRABEAN!
The only actual case of banrey having a boss.
This anticiapates Lesley Gore (b.1946,Tenafly NJ) when Fred says that it';s his top and he'll blow it (in leui of "parrty")
All in all, hilairosu colleciton in all 4 discs.
Wilma makes hirst carastic guilt trip right after, telling Fred about the bridge club with Edna (Eggbeert's mom-get it?-alliterates like Fred'sd name). And Fred and banrey groaning in reply to the goils right after--a gut buster, pals. get out your delicatessen Bronot sandwiched.
And pull up some Bronto Cactus cooler.

Only #1-#3 and #5 have loaugh tracks on this others don't, likewise for the other discs.

Additions and corrections as always are welcome.

I remember this one... a local TV station in Chicago (when they briefly ran the Flintstones in prime time during the summer months on weekends) ran this one (and promoted it in various promos).

Thought the "disguise themselves" bit was hilarious.

Guess they hadn't finalized the Flintstones' car just yet, or they were using the Rubbles'.

Some later episodes have shown "helicopters" (some seat for the human with a monkey serving as the "engine" in the way Barney did in this episode)...

It's also the first episode of zillions with Fred getting arrested... the Bedrock P.D. must've been sick of seeing him show up there (though guess not sick enough to not hire him for awhile, per those "Bedrock Cop" segments in the 1980 spinoff "Flintstone Comedy show"... maybe they figured keeping an eye on Fred via hiring him would keep him out of trouble? ;-) ).

Another amusing one...

Think the Flintstones' TV sets are one of the few devices they haven't shown how it works (i.e. animal- or human-powered), besides a rabbit sitting on top of the TV as a "rabbit-ears" antenna... though think this episode showed the inside of Fred's TV, and it resembled then-contemporary TV sets (vaccuum tubes, wires, etc.)...

This episode was the basis for a "Harvey Birdman" takeoff---the idea that Fred's personality changed when getting konked on the head got used there for Fred becoming a gangster (pretty funny, even if they identified the wrong guy as "Cary Granite".... they flashed a picture of that limousine-riding millionaire in that one latter episode where Fred goes to buy ice cream).

Recall this one... "magic banjo", heh.

The Joe Rockhead in this one IIRC doesn't resemble the "final" design for the guy they seemed to settle on in later episodes/spinoffs.

While I'd consider "The Flintstone Kids" as apocryphal (i.e., non-canonical) besides the names and details about the gang's family members, Fred's parents' names according to "The Flintstone Kids" were Ed and Edna Flintstone (Ed was a plumber with adult-Fred's voice and brown hair, while Edna was a brunette housewife who resembled and talked like Fred in drag).

Only #1-#3 and #5 have loaugh tracks on this others don't, likewise for the other discs.

Additions and corrections as always are welcome.
