So, how long until we get a fully sentient, multi-functional automaton... or the resulting, less than clean, movies from Japan with this as a star?

EDIT-
And they talk about the younger one. Hell, we had Small Wonder years ago.

Why do I think if the movie "Robot Carnival" and "I, Robot" (the book and movie)?

Let's just hope this won't turn into anything say... "The Second Reconnaisace (sp)?"

Awesome though.

Really, the andorid looks so realistic, I thought for a second it was real. I can't wait til they start showing footage of the Android acutally working, then I'll be very impressed. Hmmm, looks like R. Dorthy and Data are becoming closer and closer to reaility now...

That looks like one of those wax statue displays that tour museums. I once saw a completely lifelike Hitler, imagine if it tells you "Whatcha starin' at!" while you thought it was a dummy!

Although I think they should concentrate on artificial intelligence as well. Robots are supposed to look artificial, not real. That's the cool part.

I wouldn't be afraid of this robot, though. I think the ones to fear and the ones South Korea is going to enlist in the army and stick on the border with the North (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/4425689.stm). ;)

I really don't like the sound of this, "Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University says one day robots could fool us into believing they are human." What other purpose would they have in fooling us if they don't even know the concept of humor?

Maybe it's my imagination, but that picture is incredibly disturbing. On the physical level she looks incredibly realistic, but on a more abstract level it was overwhelmingly clear she lacks the spark of life.

Given the combination of the two, I can't shake the feeling I'm looking at a picture of a dead human propped up with her eyes open.

You're right, Tenku, this'll turn out to be another "Second Renaissance". Sure, they'd be fun to spar with at first, but what happens when they get emotions?

I see a lot of Datas and Terminators, but it makes you wonder what kind of android we'll be getting. Monroebot? Sorry Kury, those were "blank robots" with holographis fields around them to make them look human (hence the problems with electric STDs). I'd say if anything, this is more like April. But there are tons of possibilities, C3PO, Vision, R. Dorothy, Coyote, Ultron, Brainiac, Bender, Marvin, that annoying robot from Power Rangers, that annoying robot from Lost in Space, and on and on. Actually, looking at those, I'd rather have a more "robotic" looking android rather than a human-looking one.

Not that Repliee isn't pretty, but those Mr. Burns hands kind of kill the illusion. Why'd they give her those anyway?

Strange, I think of that punching dummy. Y'know, with the red sensors all over it? It's green and black. Maybe they'll make a robot/android specifically made for sparing/fighting, built with one of those monitors, level gauge. Of course, that could be a tad dangerous if it shorts out and goes on a rampage.

sigh...amazing how fast technology has progressed once the dark ages went away... I'm not sure I'd catagorize the dark ages as an era that "went away." More like, we perservered and carried ourselves out of them.

Even with a waxy complexion, she'd still be sexier than some of the girls I've dated. And I'm willing to bet she's a good listener and doesn't talk too much.

I was just advising someone to do that, actually. Seriously, why bother with dating and/or finding girls that don't run away from you (or in my case, simply dealing with weird, vague guys), just get a well-trained robot. I know half of y'all are kidding. But I mean, what the heck kind of a society would we have? People can't put up with the fact that the guys/gals around them aren't perfect (in their eyes) matches, or that the ones that they get along with don't look like a supermodel... so they have a relationship with a non-living, articulated machine?

kind of interesting that america is still stuck with this whole budgetting of everything including space progress. whereas japan has moved on to better things and has even created...oh frick. Well, the article didn't expound upon funding, so I don't know if this was a private sector development, or a creation using tax money grants. Personally, I'm all for the private sector development/science programs. I don't know that I'd be thrilled with tax money going towards something like this. A robot to accomplish tasks is one thing, thats great for potentially mining on planets, et cetera... but to spend money on something designed to fool people into treating it as a human... that's too wastefull.

I don't see it as wasteful. There are some tasks robots may perform in the future for which they would be accepted much more readily by people if they looked perfectly human.

For example a surgery robot. If it's a faceless auto assembly line type it's going to freak patients out. But if it looks just as human as the real doctor then people will be much more at ease.

I endorse those things too. And it's not like the android will give me any of that. But I'm just talking about one favor from an android. They never get tired. So if I asked for a thirty minute spar, it better react. There's more to it than punching, there's manuvering. Which is why I asked what I did initially. How can they not deliver?

I just had a scary thought

what if it malfunctions. I mean think about it, I'm not talking about going crazy and killing people, I mored or less mean malfunctioning by freezing in place or overheating and smoldering.

I mean say for example an android gives you a hug, it then breaks and freezes in place with it's arms still embracing you...those things have to weigh a few hundred pounds. You would not be able to walk and would probably fall over with that thing ontop of you pinning you down....or if it falls the other way you wouldn't be able to regain your footing....
