View Full Version : Change the World... by Jumping?

A special event named World Jump Day is set for 2006. The idea behind it is that if enough people on one side of the earth (Northern Hemisphere) all jump at the same time, it will set the earth into a new orbit which, among other things, will end global warming. There's more information at the following link.

World Jump Day (http://www.worldjumpday.org/)

Of course, the laws of physics pretty much deem this as impossible, but why not?;) It should be funny to watch at least.:anime:

It's possible such event would cause catastrophic results such as earthquakes and increased orbital rotation, causing time to accelerate faster.

But sure I'll give it a shot! :p

we would have better luck of landing to Jupiter than moving Earth to a new (uncalculated and unforseen) Orbit. The whole thing is a joke. i have heard of it before, its a mith and a legend, nothing more. Besides its not like everyone will jump at the same time coordinated.

This is like that one episode of Fairly Odd Parents when everyone became fat and there was too much weight on one side and the earth started to roll toward the sun. Someone asked this question in Science class and our teacher said it was just a myth. I think its pointless and nothing will happen. I'm wondering the look on their faces when they all jump and nothing happens.

I'll be a Mythbuster, Physics classes are paying off.

First of all the project is not a crazy idea if everyone did jump like it says we would move the earths orbit!

except.....there is a law in physics that states the force to make a real difference needs to come from a different source. So the force it requires to jump will actually cancel the force of landing, so it would not change a thing, they cancel out, it's like blowing air to a sailboat if you're in the sailboat, the air has to come from an outside source.

with that said, i'm going to jump anyways.

What a bizarre plan..................

I don't know....if it's actually going to work.

Well, for curiosity I tried to look up the time I'm supposed to jump. I put in Eastern time and....how am I supposed to wake up THAT early? But then again...school.

I didn't register, as I probably would forget it anyway.

I'd like to see the faces of all those who didn't jump when the Earth is saved and all who jumped get a million dollars and a Nobel Prize!

It might not work. It's more likely the orbit's going to change by being hit by a meteroid or something else than just jumping.

Yeah, thank goodness someone brought up physics to clarify the fact that we cannot change the Earth's orbit by jumping at the same time.

What baffles me is why people would believe Earth changing its orbit would be a GOOD thing. We're the only planet that can support life and we've been doing pretty well for the majority of our existence (4 billion years or so), why try to change the solar system??

Regardless, I think it would be a good gag. I'll consider jumping.

If people could only jump well enough to reach escape velocity... that would solve a lot of problems. :pIt's more likely the orbit's going to change by being hit by a meteroid or something else than just jumping.Of course, if a meteroid big enough to alter the planet's motion in any significant way were to hit us... the planet's motion would probably be among the least of our immediate concerns.

id love to see the mythbusters figure out a way to have 6 billion+ ppl jump at the same time using a macguyver style technique.

Take the estimated weight of an average person, multiply that by about 6 billion, launch it into the air with the estimated force of 6 billion people jumping, and see what happens. They have the technology to launch mountains into the air, right? Easy! :p

I got this book, "What Einstein Told His Barber", and there's a whole section about how this would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, work. Basically he says that it would never work because a) if 1.2 billion people weighing 150 pounds all jumped at the same time it would only be as powerful as 5.0 Earthquake (which would never knock the Earth into another orbit) and B) According to Newton's Third Law of Motion, when they hit the ground, the ground hits their feet with an equal ammount of force.

That's pretty close to Newton's action-reaction law. I heard Einstein always contradicted Newton with his theory about gravity, but there he appears to agree with him.

No, the book isn't really about What Einstein told his barber, that's just the title.

Einstein's laws only contradict Newton's laws on extreme scales, like on the atomic level.

Einstein's laws only contradict Newton's laws on extreme scales, like on the atomic level. Actually from what I've seen in a PBS video, Einstein believed there were some invisible fabrics in space that when there was a large object such as a sun it would create a rim in it causing smaller objects (such as planets) to spin about it, he also believed the solar system is curved. But that's just what I saw/heard (or think I saw/heard).

P.S. Newton didn't think that.

Let's be reasonable. This whole thing is just to sell shirts. If you think im joking well.... I'm not. Although personally, I would go with wristbands. Before they go out of style and all.

It's actually impossible to move to planet out of it's orbit just by jump, or even using today's nukes. It's due to this little law called the Conservation of Momentium. According to my Professor:
"Unless mass were expelled from the Earth, or some force were applied from outside the Earth, it would be impossible to change the Earth's orbit or rotation."

Heh, I'm not waking up at 6:30 something to jump on one foot (other foot in cast) when it won't work. But hey, if I wake up . . . or never fall asleep . . . I shall jump on one foot :p But if the Earth does change its orbit, I expect money and a nobel prize waiting in my mailbox.

All I can say is....make sure the half of the Earth with the most people on it is on the side facing the sun when this jump takes place. Otherwise, we might end up getting hotter instead of cooler. :p

I'm going to say this agian, because I hate Pseudoscience.

You can not change Earth's orbit by jumping! We can't even do it with nukes. Why? Conservation of motion. The only way you can change Earth's orbit is by:
A. Expelling alot of mass from the planet
B. Another force affects it
Unless these two things happen, Earth is still going to zero momentum even if everyone on Earth Jumped.

either that or Superman and his superpowered JLU friends can push us out of orbit.... that would be fun....

Even then, that won't affect the temptures on Earth very much. For one thing, seasons are determined by the angle light hits ground. Also, Earth's atmosphere would still keep earth warm.
