It's official, MS hates Apple ;)

Did Microsoft Wipe Apple Off the Map?
By TED BRIDIS, AP Technology Writer Mon Jul 25, 9:23 PM ET

WASHINGTON - As software rivals, Microsoft wants to wipe Apple Computer off the map. With Microsoft's new Web service for satellite photographs, did the world's largest software company find a way to do exactly that?

Internet sleuths discovered that anyone using Microsoft's new "Virtual Earth" Web site for a bird's-eye view of Apple's corporate headquarters saw only a grainy overhead photograph of what appears to be a single, nondescript warehouse and a deserted parking lot — not Apple's sprawling campus, with 11 modern buildings surrounding a plush courtyard.

Microsoft blames an outdated photograph. But Apple's headquarters in Silicon Valley shows up more appropriately for anyone viewing the same location using Google's mapping Web site, which also combines many of the same government-funded satellite and aerial overhead photographs.

Is Microsoft's version of the landscape a fantasy for Bill Gates?

Microsoft said its new mapping service, made available free during the weekend, was still in its testing phase and includes some older, black-and-white photographs from October 1991 for the neighborhood around Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. The only dates displayed on the images are copyright notices from 2004 and 2005.

"This is about mapping for consumers," spokesman Adam Sohn said. "We pull the right addresses, it just seems the images are perhaps older." Sohn said Microsoft is buying newer photographs for parts of the country, and many areas already include the most recent images available.

Google's mapping site includes color aerial photographs from October 2002 with more detail for Apple's neighborhood, provided by the U.S. Geological Survey.

One satellite expert said companies should provide more details, such as the date for each photograph, to help Internet users make sense of these images.

"It's a problem, one of the real challenges. There's a reason why most pictures in magazines and newspapers have captions," said John Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org. "What's missing from this imagery is, there are no captions to tell you when the image was acquired or what you're seeing or why you should care."

Just for proof, here's the map of the area around Apple Computer's Cupertino HQ, as seen by MSN (http://virtualearth.msn.com/default.aspx?ss=apple%20computer&cp=37.334447|-122.028451&style=h&lvl=15&v=1).

From what I understand, Microsoft is trying to kill Google. Google made a powerful search engine, so did MS, Google made desktop Search, so did MS, Google made settelite mapping and so did MS. Google is winning though, its more popular with its search engine and its desktop search, plut it has color settelite maping servises and its GMail service gives 2Gig+. And also Google has a settelite mapping download program free, its exteremely good and better than its online counterpart http://earth.google.com/ .As far as I see, its not MS vs. Apple, its MS vs. Google and Google is winning.

Howdy,

So either Microsoft is declaring to the world that it is using REALLY stale data, or that it's engaging in some really petty, childish tactics to pretend that a rival doesn't exist?

Even if I could use their product on a Mac, I'm not entirely sure I'd WANT to now. Did anybody think to check the headquarters of IBM or Red Hat Linux?

This also misses the fact that 1 Infinite Loop has been more than a warehouse and a parking lot for a lot longer than 1991.

Since when is Apple a rival to Microsoft? Macintosh and Windows have been rivals for a long time. I'm glad Windows came out on top I can't stand Macintosh.

Whether Apple is a serious threat to Microsoft is entirely debatable.

Microsoft actually owns Apple so this is kinda silly.

Apple also has an iron hand on the MP3 market with Ipod...much like Windows and the OS market...

THEY ARE THE ONE AND THE SAME!

Microsoft actually owns Apple so this is kinda silly. I didn't know that. All I know is that I hate Macintosh, as it is complicated and doesn't run almost anything.

Macintosh and Windows have been rivals for a long time. This is what I was saying:
Whether Apple is a serious threat to Microsoft is entirely debatable.Excatly. The abacus is more of a rival to Microsoft than the Mac. Well, that and Linux and other stuff.

Microsoft actually owns Apple so this is kinda silly.I think that's not true anymore. I think they sold their share a few years ago.
Anyone else got anything on this?

Apple also has an iron hand on the MP3 market with Ipod...Or would you say that Apple has a "death grip" on the MP3 Player market? As in, if they let go, they die.

I am not 100% sure but i don't think Microsoft owns any of Macintosh, they did have to save them out of bankrupcy because if not they would be a full monopoly and they would have gotten in more trouble. And i also do know they have to pay Macintosh money because of their monopoly on the market.

Macintosh has made money on ipod, but they don't own the mp3 player business, many people can't afford ipods and mp3 players have been around for a long long time. It's not their "cash cow", Macintosh makes all their money on professional users, any graphic artist, movie studios, music, picture, game design, design etc. Is all done in Macs.

Even XBOX hardware was run on macs.

Even XBOX hardware was run on macs. Used to be about three years ago. Companies like Adobe, Macromedia, Ulead, Corel, Pinnacle, Canopus AlienSkin, BorisFX, Pixelan, Adorage and others practicaly killed Apple's FinalCut Pro Video Edtiting. Apple now bundles it from pro to begginer users with their macs.
I know because I am into professional Video Editing and graphics design.

Howdy,

Microsoft actually owns Apple so this is kinda silly.
Microsoft did invest $150 million in Apple stock, but they were non-voting shares (http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=04090) at a time when Apple had a billion or so in their bank account. To say they "owned" Apple is, at best, an exaggeration.

Microsoft does not have to pay Apple a dime because they are a monopoly, either. Nobody ever has to pay anybody anything simply for being a monopoly. Being a monopoly, by itself, is not illegal. It is only illegal if you use your monopoly status to inflict predatory pricing or other quantifiable harm on your customers.

Ipod saved Apple from exctinction
I would have pointed to the iMac before the iPod as the real turning point for Apple as a company. Apple is still making a little less than half its revenue (at least as of 3Q 2005 (http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/07/13/liveupdate/index.php)) from selling Macs.

I don't think Apple( or anybody else, for that matter) has any kind of commanding lead in video editing these days, but they aren't doing badly. I do know that they took a huge chunk out of Adobe's product when FCP came out.

In any event, Apple does not bundle any version of FCP with any currently shipping Mac. They do ship iMovie with everything, but it is to Final Cut Pro what a Toyota is to a Lexus.

Even if they don't use their products i can assure you they still use a Mac machine. No they don't because most of the brands and products like Maya, Most Abobe Like Abobe Premiere Pro, Avid Broadcacting, Pinnacle, and Canopus does not support Macs.

I think it use to be bthat Apple got more corporate business, whereas Microsoft got more home/personal business, but I think that's changing, well Mac kinda stays stagnit in this whole thing.
