My experience with doctors was mostly great. One Lasik surgeon "cured" my nearsightness, my gastroenterologist cured me of my ulcer and heartburn I was having for nearly two years, my ENT (Ear, Nose Throat) doctor "cured" me from my seasonal nose bleeds by using acid cotton swab to burn the veins in my nostril. I had a successful Appendix operation. I had sewing needle stuck in my leg (don't ask) and it was surgically removed, it was millimeters away from my vain. My oral surgeon fixed my out-of-place jaw joint TMJ.
Of course I had a bad experience with a doc once. It was suppose to be a routine tonsils operation, but he accidentally cut out my uvula as well, Jackass:mad: (sorry reflex). So my experience with all kinds of doctors was good except for one.

When I see the Doctor, I have a bizaree mixed feelings. First, I'm bored waiting in the lobby. Second, I feel apathic, I just don't really care when I go to Doctor appoitments. Third, I have slight anixety when I actually see the doc, more or less becuse of the fear that there's might be something wrong with me.
For your fear of seeing a Doctor, try to talk it over with a physician before a chechup. Get to know the person. Or you could think happy thoughts :anime:

That's exactly the reason I don't want to have a lasic eye surgery, kind of.

That's exactly the reason I don't want to have a lasic eye surgery, kind of. Lasik was better than Great. I was seeing 20/20 on the second day, It was amazing. But tounsils Op it was local anesthesia. I was strapped to a chair with leather belts on my hands and feet 9simulal to electric chair no kidding). He put a plastic see through apron on me and I saw all the blood flow from my mouth. I remember saying "blood" and he answered "Its OK". On a Plastic dish I remember seeing two round pieces and one flat one (uvula). But I was 8 and I had no idea. I only found out a year later by my physician. I sued the pants off of him.

I have had some bad experiences with them, and need to go to one, and
I really am scared...Does anyone else feel the same? Any ideas on how
one overcomes this... One things gor sure, yelling and cussing at them only makes them clumsy
Hate them, but I submit only to keep things from getting worse. I really have to close my brain when the needles come out. Just drawing blood is bad, then the idiots want arterial blood, they really go deep for that :crying:
All I remember of my tonsilectomy was the mask, never heard of anyone getting locals :o
Stitches, I found locals don't help at all, that's what all the cussing and yelling was about  idiot hospital doctors know nothing about practicing medicine.
Someday I may be ready to tell the story about my four broken ribs and collapst lung. Dear gods, I knew a chest tube was going to hurt, but the eighth time he stabed me, I'd wished they'd just let me die.
And of course the idiot nurse, they won't unstrap you from the board until they check for spinal injury, pushing down on my feet, thinking she found an injury when I started yelling, so she pushes a little harder while I'm trying to get it through her thick head that's she's crushing my achiles tendon into the corner of the board.
Medical people are demonic fools and should be avoided at all costs
I hope this calms your fears [/sarcasms not quite the right word, I'm one step from physically ill around doctors]

I hope this calms your fears [/sarcasm] Ha, I stare at the tiny needle that goes into my arm. I am also a frequent blood donor. I am an O Positive, Universal Donor. Those needles are huge, because they take out liquid not put it in. And they take a pint of blood, I always feel a bit woozy after that. But I eat chocolate and drinking juice and get better. :)its good to know I help save lives. My blood is rare because everyone can use it. It can either be used as a whole or divided in three parts (Plasma, red Blood cells, and platelets).
I had my shoulder dislocated when I was bike riding and hit a tree. It took 6 HUGE doctors 7 pulls to get my joint back in place. They put their knees on my chest and PULLED with all their might. I yelled like I was having an Autopsy and I was not dead. They could not give me morpheme because it would lower my heart rate too far and sent me into sock. That was the most painful experience of my life. I also broke my fingers, wrist ankle and I had a dislocated knee cap (That was the second most painful experience of my life)

There was no bad experience in particular, but I do dislike going to the doctor slightly. Either I have to stupidly pointless check-ups, a shot (I don't have a fear of 'em, I just don't like 'em), or something else I most likely won't like.

You're going to need to go into a little bit more detail to get any educated answers about overcoming your fear.
Gatomon's suggestion to speak with your physician about your fears is a good one. If a doctor is aware that the patient is already apprehensive, the treatment you receive for that visit most likely will be better. Unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time, nor does it apply to subsequent visits. It's worth a shot though.
If you're with an HMO, it may be possible to do some research on your doc. I know that most HMO hospitals also have semi-biographical webpages for their physicians. You might also ask friends for their recommendations.
"stupidly pointless check-ups" *sigh* And this is why preventative medicine will continue to be among the lowest paying medical physician jobs in America. Who needs maintenance anyway?

Wow. It's not necassarily doctors that give me panic attacks so much as it is hospitals. My chest feels really tight and I get so anxious -- thus I'll never be able to have children :p . I don't think I've ever had a bad experience, though. Honestly, I've been so fortunate as to never had to go to the hospital for injury (like solarflere *I cry*), but, you know. As you go through school, you have to take shots and boosters and such. I almost passed out after taking a shot this one time, and the nurse asked if I was anemic (I'm thin and quite pale). Yeah, I just freaked out.
The pathetic thing is, I end up in a hospital every summer for my sister (she's epileptic) and I go with my mom to stay with her. Still, I fear those horridly sterile, humming rooms so very much.

Well, I haven't been to a doctor in awhile (okay, so I AM going to my mental doctor next week, but that is beside the point) but my last doctor sort of creeped me out! I was going in for a routine checkup on my tibia (the bone below the knee cap). For those of you who don't know, at the end of April I was at a friend's house on a trampoline and fell wrong and broke my leg. So anyways, I am going into the office and he looks at my leg, then he puts his own leg up on the table and exclaims "Wow, your leg is the EXACT same size as mine". I don't really know why, but it really creeped me out!

I had a really mean pediatrician(sp?) when I was small that I think traumatised me just enough that I get really anxious when visiting the doctors for any reason (the man simply hated children, why he chose to practise pediatric medicine is beyond me.) I can remember him practically jamming the needles into my arm and I got my major vacination, the one that leaves the circular scar mark in your arm, in my upper thigh because he thought my arms were too skinny.
That and I was hit by a car at nine years of age, spent a few days in the hospital and had blood taken near constantly because they were hoping that I didn't have any kidney damage. ( It was a Cadillac. Big car, little skinny girl.)
Even now if I have to give blood, I get really, really upset and have passed out on several occasions after doing so. I refuse to look when they do take blood or give shots, and sad to say I cannot donate blood because the thought actually makes me physically ill. I practically have panic attacks. Maybe it's a form of post traumatic stress disorder? I haven't any idea. All I know is I literally hate visiting a doctor for anything, and right now I have to go see one because I have an inner ear infection and it hurts like crazy.
My nerves will be shot by the time i do make an appointment and go.

I don't go to the doctor often, but ususally I think "Let's get this over with". Well....unless s/he's going to give me a shot. Usually I try to ignore it, but I can feel the pain even with my head turned away and my eyes closed...ouch. :crying:

I have no qualms with going to the doctor. When I was about 10 I was scared about getting shots, but I've gotten my blood taken so many times by then that it doesn't even hurt anymore.

I'm afraid of Doctors from the stories my Mom tells me in that a lot of them sound incompetent. I'm talking about the brain surgeons and such a lot of them seem to need brain surgeons themselves.

I don't really care if I go to ANY doctor's office. My mood is just: Meh....whatever...do what you gotta do.
I did have this weird experience though. I was a kid at that time....but I my guess is my mom went to the wrong doctor. I think it's that procedure when you're sexually active or just had your first time of sexual intercourse and you have to go to a gynecologist to check if everything's okay....down there. Yeah...it was weird...and I'm not sure really why that happened, except for that guess up there and something else. (Sorry, but due to the sensitivity of this matter, I really can't reveal it. But it's not that bad).
I'm actually becoming a doctor after I graduate high school.

Well, I haven't really been to the doctor in years. The only bad experiences that I remember having with them involve needles and getting shots when I was a kid. Luckily, the last time I remember getting a shot was when I was about 7 years old. I still hate shots of any kind and prefer not to think about them. But other then with needles, yeah I guess my attitudes towards them are anxious and just wanting to do what I gotta do and get it done and over it.

I don't fear my doctors because I know that they're professional workers who are obligated to protect me and my body. However, I will say that sometimes the experiance in the clinic isn't exactly pleasant. I've never liked going to the dentist, that's for sure. It always bugs me whenever they stick things into my mouth and I feel metal objects brush against my teeth. Going to the eye doctor isn't much better either because I know what they're going to say before they even say it - that my eyes are getting worse. But that doesn't mean I fear them because I don't, I trust them enough to do their jobs properly.

When I was a kid and I had to get inoculations, I was terrified and I yelled, they did it in my butt. I always hated the dentist, still don’t like them, especially the time I had to go to an Oral Surgeon (nicknamed butcher) for my TMJ misplaced jaw joint. There is a hospital next to my house, Coney Island Hospital. I went there once with a broken wrist at 8 a.m. and at 6 p.m. I got an x-ray, at 8 p.m. I was out of there. There is a joke about that hospital, "if you go there with a heart problem, you will exit through the morgue", its more or less true.

I dislike doctors greatly but I am terrified of hospitals (probably because I've spent four years locked in one). Oldtoonguy I hope you feel better but even if you are feeling nervous if you ARE feeling sick it's very important that you see the doctor. I don't want your health compromised and I want to see you on this board for a very long time. Be brave and good luck.

my husband handles donations easy too, except that he's given blood so much that he has developed scar tissue and can no longer actually be allowed to do so.
pair my nerves getting blood drawn with the fact that I also have something called 'floating veins' in which it takes a while to even find them much less take blood, even with a tourniquet and you have a pretty fair insight to why I can't, fear and hard to locate veins.
Oklahoma is one of the few states that still requires the syphilis testing to get married, which requires blood being drawn. It took barely a minute to draw my husbands blood, mine... well the nurse stuck me and stuck me for about 15 minutes until the doctor was brought in and after a minute or two of digging about with the needle, found a vein and got enough blood for the test.
I was a pretty shade of grey after that, according to my husband. While in the hospital for the miscarriage, they took the blood from the IV in my hand. Seems my veins in my hands are easy to locate.

When I was young,I was terrified of having to take shots. Now that I'm
older,I am not terrified of shots, however I still do not consider taking shots a pleasent experiance. But we're not discussing shots are we? No,we're discussing people's feelings and experiance with doctors.
Furthermore,I usually get along quite well with doctors, and dentists as well.Although,I usually do not like
sitting in the waiting room. And what's more, after waiting in then the waiting room, for God knows how long, you have to sit in one of the other rooms for
another lengthy period of time.'Tis a shame.I hope you overcome your fear of doctors,Mr.oldtoonguy.Especially,if you are not in the best of health.
