Perhaps I'll come and help out in the future brother. For the moment though, I've given up debating politics on internet message boards. It only leads to me beating my head against the wall here (ok....maybe not....but I'd LIKE to some days...)

I think republicans are just less prone to voicing their political views than the other groups...
it's more or less a quiet stealthy movement...

I doubt that religion will be allowed much longer..I saw too much ugliness there...Wrong information, name calling, hasty generalization, lies, uproar, scapegoating,,,,,,,, etc...
I meant on other boards I go to. Things tend to get ugly, no matter what it is.

What is do you mean by "worse"He means being a conservative is worse than being a Republican.
I don't know. Republicans actually win elections though, which I don't like. You "real" conservatives are like the libertarians. Just crazy enough to keep yourselves out of office. And thus, harmless. But this is all grossly inappropriate.

20, 22. It varies.
Mostly it is intellectual discussions on possible outcomes, and opinons on what are best options, quotes from fairly reputable sources.few jokes, .You got to look it over to see what kind of comments are being made..Just hit the link at the bottom of this post, check it out....
...Very little flame or insults, disagreements are very civil...I would say were good for least 30:)
It is a Sci Fi classic book published in l974 by Robert Hineman, about a war that never ends...Taking place in the future, we follow our heros in a space craft fight with other craft from another group in a time dimension...
...Causes for the war, are lost, changed, forgotten, the fighting continues on and on, no one ages, different enemies appear, but the fight goes on..
....It is about 275 pages, considered by some to be one of the best ever written on the human condition of fighting long never ending wars.....Stuart...sorry about double posting, but my guess is that few know the reference...there is much more in sci fi literature on this classic book.
....Or better yet..read it yourself, it is available at any library, probably mulitiple copies...you probably will not have to wait to get it, or put a reserve on it...

Actually, it was Joe Hadleman who wrote The Forever War.
The book, BTW, is about soldiers who go to war with an alien race. But because of time dialation, centuries past while to soldiers only experience months. The world they return to is compeltly different from the one they left.
Hadleman probably wrtoe the book to express the feelings he felt after fighting in Vietnam.
Gatomon41, I am sorry I got the author wrong.. I stand corrected, you are right, it was Joe Hadleman, not Robert Hineman who wrote the Forever War.......Oh well:o Stuart

Here's a question for the folks here on this thread.. Where does NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Material Go? (I was planning to start a thread on today's (July 4th's) STS-121 Launch and if it were to go to the Politics board, I feel it would go under "Domestic News" (But this is space Exploration and Maybe a little politics..
So where would something like this go? Here on TZ.net? Or on the Politics board..(I'm flexible either way...)

EDIT: Okay, I think the experiment has become complete. I think that we should integrate it into the boards. We've proven that we can discuss politics seriously and civilly. Plus, I think the reason this has so little posters is because not many casual posters want to go to a different board to discuss politics. If we integrate it into the boards, I think the topic could become more popular. I never understood the ban on politics in the Cafe. No offence to anyone, but I think its too restrictive, especially when threads covering major events get closed because of it. The "Saddam Hussein Execution" thread is an example, and I have a feeling the Boris Yeltsin board may be closed too.
EinBebop

One problem is that it loses casual posters. For example, I don't follow comic books much lately, but I do check in with that forum from time-to-time. If they were to make it a separate website? Never see me again...
James

There have been instances when politics has snuck back in to the Cafe, and when it does, it STILL gets nasty. I don't think we're all in a position to take politics civilly, or whether on a Toon Board where people come to relax and hang, whether it really has any real necessity at all. It's too close to people's hearts, and from what I read, given how split your country is between the two current political ideologies, and how current political trends really do test those ideologies to their limit (thanks to current climates), it's unsurprising that politics would still be such a hot potato.

I made a tongue-in-cheek, neutral comment about the difference between Republican censorship and Democrat censorship in a forum the other day, and someone felt the need to set me straight about their party's ideology. :/

Actually, I think we should make it into a seperate board. The points made my James make valid sense, but if we make a board where people could discuss politics and nothing else, I think it could work. Of course, we'd have to put some restrictions on the page, like, of course, no personal attacks whatsoever. It should be a civilized debate page. Also, we'd need to make sure that the mods would be politically neutral in enforcing the rules.

Also, we'd need to make sure that the mods would be politically neutral in enforcing the rules.
The external board did try that, but on its own, it didn't draw interest, and for those have spent waaay too much time here will know, no matter how hard we all try to keep the topics civil, the become circular in debate - given no one is going to shift their opinion - and go round and round until all the civility begins to strip.
One of the main reason the ban occurred was simply because the Cafe just became a place no one wanted to venture into. It was no longer a place to kick back, it was tense, with mods having to constantly watch threads which people were pretty antagonistic or frustrated. A board of pure politics really has nothing about us as a community, or cartoons, so would really be redundant.
I'll make an honest example. When the politic debates ensued, I found certain member's standpoint - which was pretty much a mirror of my own - incredibly frustrating. To my horror, I found the mirror standpoints politically drove a wedge in how I perceived them as people.
Since we avoid political and - as much as the board can - religion entanglements, I find it quite astonishing how much political standpoints actually tainted my enjoyment of other posters. I don't like that. :) I think if such ideological debates don't offer anything positive to our communities. They don't educate, they don't bring people closer, they just exemplify our differences.
In this climate, I find people I enjoy the forum presence of people I found very frustrating in ideological standoffs. I won't name any of those people, but I will readily admit that the politics really cultured my failings to distinguish between ideologies and community spirit.
We don't need politics, it's just real life tribal detail which debate here won't change and doesn't help bond us as people, but separates us into different camps.
from sun/oldtoonguy:
As one who tried to make political discussions work, and tried to keep them from getting out of hand, and has watched them for a very long time..I would say this..
...1. In order for them to work you need a very high level of maturity..Civil discourse must be kept that way..sadly, the level of maturity here, does not permit that. It is extremely difficult, even at message boards dedicated to that purpose, with highly educated adults..forget it here.
...2. The moderators close the discussions too soon.. I could point to some that were going fine, but were closed down for no reason....
...3. You could do it at a board that stands alone, to the side, but who is going to moderate..As Stewie said, SSJPabs bailed out pretty soon..there was no one there...well it didn't matter..No one cared, and I am afraid that I tried too hard, my point of view was not one that people wanted to read..
...4. If you keep it in the cafe, while it may be educational, it will probably be very hard to manage..And, James has a point, It doesn't have much to do with toons...But that thread about contraception last month, really was political.. and that one went reasonably well.......
...5 The polarized nature of our body politic here in the U.S.A. is clearly divisive and difficult to manage.. While I could spend a month on why that exists, James is right, it does. It will not go away.
.Sadly, this aspect of the body politic, (refected in discussion here) would indeed take away from Toonzone in the long run.
...I would like to see political discussions, but only if they will be civil, which is not going to happen. so leave things the way they are...........

Okay, here's a some thoughts on my mind.
Which is worse, Rush Limbaugh calling Jesse Macbeth and people like him as fake soldiers that or Brian De Palma making a smear film that calls our men in uniform are criminal, murdering, rapists just because of one incident?
Jimmy Carter is only speaking out against Bush because he doesn't want to be called the worst President in American history. Not gonna happen.
Sean Penn is a Commie red-blooded traitor as is Jane Fonda. Freedom of speech is one thing, but giving comfort to our enemies is an other. Kick them both out of here.
George W. Bush lost me as a leader, him supporting a murder makes me lose a interest. But impeaching him would be stupid idea, he only has a year & a half left.
Keith Olbermann is a world class buffoon.
John Edwards is a racist, no two ways about.
Liberals only want the Fairness Doctrine to come back because Air America failed, as did Jim Hightower & Mario Cuomo.
Hilary Clinton will only win in 2008 if the threat of Christians running a third party candidate is true. That's how her husband won the first time.
I'm not know what is God's views on homosexuality, but homosexuals dressed as nuns & mocking Christian values because they disagree are digging a hole. Whether they started it or are just made it deeper.
I want to hear more news that don't involve any modern celebrity.I'm ready to hear what you say.

But I am not moderating no board....It is nasty. You can talk about what you want. I may respond. I may not.

But I am not moderating no board....It is nasty. You can talk about what you want. I may respond. I may not.
.. But some discussions dissolve into nasty ugly namecalling. To discuss means to listen, not to yell. Especially when you don't agree with the other person's ideas. And especially when you strongly disagree with the other person's ideas. ........Think it over..................sun............
Most of my namecalling is backed though.
I'm saying that John Edwards is a racist because of this quote he said recently.
"We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating – pretty soon we're not going to have a young African-American male population in America, they're all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two."
That and he has ties to & benefitted from a company that forclosed mortgages on people who survived Hurricane Katrina.
Okay, the Olbermann comment was my personal opinion. I just feel he acts like that on Countdown, I do like his one minute bit on Sunday Night Football.
But come on, Sean Penn has shook hands with and praised Communist dictators and bashed America. He even got his facts wrong on what TV station Hugo Chavez forced to shut down. And then there's Fonda, she sided with the North Vietnamese government & called our soldiers war criminals during a time of war. I don't know about you, but to me, both of those acts are treachery.

Okay, here's a some thoughts on my mind. Which is worse, Rush Limbaugh calling Jesse Macbeth and people like him as fake soldiers that or Brian De Palma making a smear film that calls our men in uniform are criminal, murdering, rapists just because of one incident?Wait, so... this is "because of one incident", right? They raped, murdered, and committed criminal acts, but... they need to do it more than once ot be held accountable? Give them a second chance, even if they've done horrible things?
Jimmy Carter is only speaking out against Bush because he doesn't want to be called the worst President in American history. Not gonna happen. EVERYONE speaks out against Bush. Even YOU spoke out against Bush, and you were sure never a president.
Sean Penn is a Commie red-blooded traitor as is Jane Fonda. Freedom of speech is one thing, but giving comfort to our enemies is an other. Kick them both out of here. I notice the main defense people are giving against Rush Limbaugh is "freedom of speech", but when someone uses "freedom of speech" to voice views attempting to understand countries other than America, it's "treason" and they should be deported for this?
George W. Bush lost me as a leader, him supporting a murder makes me lose a interest. But impeaching him would be stupid idea, he only has a year & a half left. The Daily Show's tribute to "words like torture and progress losing their very meanings in the war on terror" parodying all the generic "soldiers are losing their lives every day in this war, respect them" speeches was hilarious. Why can't we make up our minds on what torture means? In my opinion, simulated drownings are pretty horrible.
Keith Olbermann is a world class buffoon.Don't watch his show much, so I wouldn't know.
John Edwards is a racist, no two ways about. Maybe he went a little overboard with that comment, but it definitely IS an issue. I sure wouldn't say ALL teenaged blacks will be in jail soon, but I'd say a large percent WILL be in jail. The current "rap thug ghetto druggie" clique really has to stop.
Liberals only want the Fairness Doctrine to come back because Air America failed, as did Jim Hightower & Mario Cuomo.Eh, I don't know... Something DOES need to be done about the lack of fairness on some channels (Fox News in particular) but I'm not sure if applying a fourty year old doctrine is the thing to do.
Hilary Clinton will only win in 2008 if the threat of Christians running a third party candidate is true. That's how her husband won the first time. Not a big fan of Hillary to be quite honest. I'm thinking Obama will win. And why would the Christians make a third party? The Republicans are all biblophiles, so it shouldn't be necessary to make another party which will just do the same thing.
I'm not saw what is God's views on homosexuality, but homosexuals dressed as nuns & mocking Christian values because they disagree are digging a hole. Whether they started it or are just made it deeper. ....Huh? "I'm not saw what is God's views on homosexuality"? What does "I'm not saw" mean? Also, what's up with this "gays dressed as nuns" stuff? You're sure they were joking, right, not just gays wanting to get jobs as nuns? Actually, I didn't even really need to ask that question. I can't see many gays wanting to preach a religion that preaches intolerance of their sexual preference. Of course they were mocking their opressors.
I want to hear more news that don't involve any modern celebrity.Okay, I'll agree on this. Get Paris Hilton and Britney Spears out of the media. I'm sick of them.
VIETNAM? That was DOZENS of years ago. The MAJORITY of young Americans hated that war. It was CONSTANTLY being protested. I can't see throwing someone out of the country for disagreeing with the Vietnam war as being particularly sane. If we're going to throw people out for their opinions on Nam 35 years ago, you may as well throw out half the people over 50 years old.
As for Sean Penn... again, I don't think deporting people based on opinions in a country based on the liberty of free speech is a good thing. I don't really agree with him being so... pro-Iran, as I don't particularly want Iran to come bomb America or anything, but I don't think throwing him out of the country and saying "if you love Iran so much, go live there" is the right thing to do.

"I'm not saw what is God's views on homosexuality"? What does "I'm not saw" mean?
***DOUBLES CHECKS POST***
Crap, I meant to type "know". I better edit that.
No, I'm referring to a Gay Rights group in San Francisco that openly mocks Christians in their protests.
Not here..over there.. at the TZ Politics Board...
...The idea of that board is that there would be a place to talk politics. Not in this thread. Over there, you can start your own thread. Own ideas, and own namecalling. Over here, what I see above... is not real discourse.
Not real discussion.. just arguement, and namecalling............
so....it is ok over there, not here.....especially what has been discussed in the few posts... above.
For if that is going to be accepted, then I have a few things to say about what has been said. And you do not want to hear from me...sun...

Why is it dead over at TZPolitics? There hasn't been a post since last year! It's interesting to read the old posts. Remember when we thought Guliani had a shot at the GOP and Obama was a distant second? It's as exciting as it ever was! Are we really just too obsessed with our distractions?

I think it's because we've allowed a small outlet on TZ for the elections. Granted, it has very specific rules, but it is something more than what the forum has had previously. That seems to be the dominating issue right now.

Back again, going to stay back this time in case anyone wants to try it again. Things were pretty touch and go for a while but I'm into my 3rd year of LS now, and that means 1) I am much better at being objective! and 2) more time on my hands!

Yeah, the politics board is incredibly dead. I'm glad that we can discuss the election on the main board at least, now, as that gets a decent amount of replies, even if the actual politics board doesn't.
Have at it political fans.......

Is politics banned from the Cafe again? Zach's post closing the election day thread made me think it is. I guess we should try to revive this board.

I think there are very few people on a forum dedicated to cartoons that want to talk politics. I know I don't, as I am very stupid on the subject, and my arguments tend to boil down to "Civilization needs to be wiped out, so that whatevers in charge can get a second chance."
How about a religion thread?

Well the election threads were pretty good this year and I was hooping that some of that would carry over to the TZ Politics board but sadly it's just me and sun on there now.
I posted an article about President George Bush at the TZ Politics Board..
http://tzpolitics.suddenlaunch3.com/
link above if you would like to discuss him and his Presidency. Bob Herbert of the New York Times wrote an article today about the last for years. I stated a comment at the end, do you agree or disagree? Perhaps someone might add a comment there. Happy New Year to all............sun.

The Americans at least have a good left-wing president. Shame us Brits have to be stuck between a party that wants to restore Victorian values and ideals and forgetting about the little guy, and another party that's so soft they're a pillow and the leader cannot keep our money supply in check! Why can't the Lib Dems get into Parliament, they'd find the balance needed to run the country - yes, look out for the little guy, but keep the business in so those little guys actually have a job!
Sorry, just had to get that out of my system.
I didn't participate in the elections thread because I was so angry at the past administration. Arguing about Bush, Palin and Mc Cain would have been a waste of time for me. But I will try one more post at that Politics Board.

As for politics, I'm an independent.
Both parties have done wrong and I'm plenty sick of it myself.:flapjack:
