What's the story behind this series of cartoons seemingly produced for TV? Why were they released into public domain? They seem out of place in those cheap collections next to old Popeye and Bugs prints from the 40's.

Yep. I have a complete compilation DVD of the toons that I picked up for a buck. As for why they're in public domain, I don't really have an answer. That might've been a case where the rights holders just let the license lapse.

Something else I've wondered is why the colors are so bad on most copies of those cartoons. Is it the type of film they were done on? They just seem like the colors had faded a lot worse than the PD cartoons from the 30's and 40's.

Just a cheap film processing. I think they used Eastman, or something cheaper.

Ugh. My aunt got me a collection of those toons on DVD. Those have got to be the most boring, unfunny cartoons I've ever seen. I threw the disc in the trash. My brain hurt from watching them.

The big appeal of these cartoons were the live-wrap around segments done by the Stooges, the very last time the group performed. Unless they're included in the videos, I'd say the cartoons aren't worth it. Even the Scooby Doo movies probably did a better job capturing the essense of the Stooges than these cartoons did.
