View Full Version : Better Father: Fred Flintstone or George Jetson?

This is a question I ponder sometimes.
You see, the typical image of these two is that Fred is a loudmouth and George is mild mannered. But, upon further thought, my opinion kind of flips there.
Because, the thing with Fred is, he puts up a lot of bluster, and a loud front, but when Pebbles came along, it revealed he was just a big ol' softie. And it's not just pebbles. He really seems to genuinely love his wife, his friends, and his child, and likes his life, even as he does wish for a better station in it.
But the thing about George Jetson is... I don't know. It's hard to put my finger on certain examples, but, the impression I get of him from lots of the episodes is that he really resents his family, his wife, and kids, and resents his job, basically is angry at his whole life. Yeah, it seems he loves his wife, but their relationship seems mostly physical in nature. Otherwise, it kind of feels like he doesn't really like her.
Ofcourse, I could be completely off-base, so that's why you vote!

I prefer Fred to George. Although I think they both care for their families, Fred is by far the more entertaining of the two. Plus, I agree he can be a big softie when it comes to Pebbles.:anime:

I would have to say George because he could better provide for his family even though like Fred they always seem to get fired.

"Better provide"? George seemed to get fired in every flippin' episode by his hothead of a yutz of a boss, Mr. Spacely. Mr. Slate only fired Fred when Fred did something particularly obnoxious, not just for looking at him the wrong way...
Plus, both families seemed to be "middle class" to me... despite their respective time-era's standards of what "middle class" consists of. The Flintstones never seemed too uncomfortable to me (if not rich)...
Granted, I'm of the opinion that despite both of their dissatisfactions in live, Fred is happier than George is, and has a more satisfactory life, even if he needs to use his feet to start his car. Fred's got close friends (the Rubbles), social activities (bowling leagues, poker games, pool halls, the Water Buffalos), etc.
Meanwhile, George might have more gadgets, but he's stuck working for a browbeating boss in order to make ends meet... plus he doesn't seem to have much of a life outside of work---his sole human friend seems to be his building's superintendant, and most of his non-work time seems spent sitting around at home (albeit enjoying the cool futuristic gizmos).
Hmm.... this sort of reminds me of the book that came out a year or two ago, called "Bowling Alone"---listing reasons why Americans are becoming increasingly isolated from each other and don't participate in communal activities (like, in the book's example, bowling leagues) anymore. Society making a move toward a more Jetsons-type existence in more ways than one? :-)
As for who the better father is: hmm...I might have to say Fred. Hey, would George enter a risky high-speed auto race just to get his kids (who're already half-grown/almost completely grown) a college scholarship?! ;-)

Now that I think of it, Fred always did seem better adjusted compared to the bundle of nerves that was George Jetson.

Althougth fred was the cooler of the 2 I pick george cause that poor guy had to put up whit a lot of stuff. Ungreatful boss,a wild daughter,a wife who spend most of the money at the mall, and there were bad things that happend to him outside the family&job. Fred is still a good dad but due to him being a big sofee, his daughter has him rap around her finger.

It seems to me that Fred really really cares for and loves Pebbles a lot. From what I've seen Fred would do almost anything to protect her and Wilma. Even though he's a loud-mouth most of the time, he is a softy and deep down does care about his family and his friends, the Rubbles.
I think George cares about his family too, but his kids don't need as much care as Pebbles, sort of. Judy's a teenager but Elroy's still young, but I don't think they need as much care as Pebbles who is an infant. Sure, Judy and Elroy need care as much as anyone else but they're older and George probably doesn't want them to think of him as overprotective. That's just my guess anyway.

George had a teenage daughter who seemed a bit too loose and an elementary school son during his 24 episode run. Fred had three seasons before he had to deal with Peebles.

I think Fred is much better because he's funnier than George.
You know....when I see Fred I base him off of Ralph from the Honeymooners. But only nicer ^_^;;

Well.. The flintstones were inspired by "The Honey mooners"
Anyway... I Think Fred Flintstone(Pedro Picapiedra in the spanish dub) is a better father, he always cared a lot for Pebbles and Wilma. George Jetson(Super sonico in the spanish dub.) seem to always shout at his sons for everything.

Yes. But what does that have to do with who is a better father?

It's been eery how this poll has remained in pretty much a dead heat all along.
