That still doesn't answer my question.

I chalk it up to a lack of decent alternatives. I can't recall any other female characters in those shorts (and in most Popeye-related shows that came in the following years).

Why does anyone see anything in Paris Hilton?
there were other women, mostly the same fat chick over and over again who seems to be male crazed.
there was one skit where olive was in a exercise session or something and they have 3 other women, two had figures and were thin, the other was a fat chick.

Find a way to listen to the Popeye theme song backwards or say "I'm Popeye the sailor man" backwards, and all will be revealed. It would appear Popeye is mearly a horny sailor who spent too much time at sea. Be advised for bad language you might unknowingly say.
P.S. If you want to know what it says I'll PM it to you.
It has already been said but there wherent many other women and besides, being in the navy might have set a few screwes loose
I'd say it's from all that Spinach he eats. Eating too much of that nasty stuff has to do something to your brain.
As for Bluto...uh...he's an idiot? *Shrugs*

Chalk it up to different people having different tastes. Skinny women may be their thing.

Listen, I doubt there is an actual explanation as to why Bluto and Popeye would fight to the death over someone that looks like Olive Oyl. She's the only main female character in the entire series and they both want her, end of story.

Amen to that--even if it's a man in drag who suddenly gets curves in all the right places (I've seen enough LTs to discover this)

Well, on this one episode of Robot Chicken (that Laugh-In meets Toys R Us meets SNL meets MAD-TV cartoons style sketch comedy show with the toys), they had Olive Oyl running on a beach with breasts (this was when Wimpy's angel showed him what life would be like if he were never born), but they looked out of place on her.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that...I've been figuring that out back when I was obsessed with classic cartoons and I still don't know why Popeye and Bluto would fight over a twig like her.
Maybe the Florence Nightengale effect has something to do with it. [/BTTF]

Maybe both of them had a foot fetish. I should know because I have a foot fetish towards women with big feet and Olive Oyl does have some big feet so maybe thats what Popeye and Bluto were seeing in her .

More to the point, what does Olive see in Popeye and Bluto?
Okay, Popeye's at least dedicated, but I don't see why she shows affection for Bluto.

She was bulimic before Kate Moss and Calista Flockhart made it cool.
Hell, even Jack Nicholson dated Lara Flynn Boyle.

Maybe this modest parallel will cover it: Let's say two best buds were hanging out near the beach and along came the skinny yet alluring woman of their dreams. One guy was the low-key type, personable, pleasant, yet vaguely reluctant, and had his Jet-Ski tethered to the dock, while the other had muscles in his ears, a shaved head, various other macho clothing accessories with swaggering personality to match, and the biggest Harley-Davidson bike in existence waiting in the parking lot.
Given the law of averages, etc., which dude do you think she'd walk off with?

Well, neither Popeye or Bluto are great catches or good lookers so I'm guessing it's because of their personalities. Either that or they breed 'em homely in that village.

On the flipside, notice how that stacked female gymnast captured Popeye's attention!
I think the whole premise, as someone said, is a couple of sailors who've been out to sea and haven't seen a woman in a long time, so they are desperate and go for the first thing in a skirt to come a long. When a better one shows up, then they are allured by that.

Think about this: In the Famous Studios Popeye cartoon, "Vacation With Play", Bluto asked all the lovely women to come to the poolside. All the women are sexy and have curves, and who does Bluto choose?

You all need an eduation on Popeye history...
*cues wavy flashback effect*
Popeye first appeared on January 17, 1929 as a minor character in Segar's newspaper cartoon strip (Click link for more info and facts about Thimble Theatre) Thimble Theatre, which had been running for years with protagonists Olive Oyl, her brother Castor Oyl, and boyfriend Ham Gravy. Castor Oyl was a cheapskate and a crook. Ham Gravy wasn't much better. Olive Oyl was the innocent little sister that was dragged along on all of their schemes.
Castor and Ham needed to rent a boat on their way to the mysterious "Monkey Island". The lengend of the burried treasure there brought out Castor's greed. Knowning that neither of the men could sail, they hired Popeye, a local sailor. He was a brute and more muscle than brains. The character grew onto people and eventually become a star. Unlike Ham and Castor, Popeye had a heart of gold and was honest to a fault. He become the hero in a sea on villians. Eventually the good natured Popeye won the heart of Olive.
The Popeye character became so popular that he was given a larger and larger part in the strip; then the strip was renamed after him. This is when Popeye's old sailing buddy, Bluto, came into the scene. Neither men are good looking, so they were never hunting down beauty queens, but rather a good honest woman (in the very traditional and sexist connotation).
*ends wavy flashback*
So in closing, I think Popeye and Bluto are attracted to Olive's honest nature and the idea that she is really the woman they'd both like to settle down with. In the Famous Studio versions of Popeye cartoons, other women are given more ample physiques, but they lack the brains and inner beauty Olive Oyl has.

Yep, like CookieS says, you need to go back to the funny pages to figure it out.
Put the two most popular characters together, why not?
As for Bluto's attraction, fighting over a girl makes for good conflict.
Maybe your question should be why isn't Olive a hottie?
The readers and audience fell in love with her as a gooney looking funny face, blame them.
It's a comedy, and Olive is a great comedic character.
